That's exactly what I was thinking. If they already have direct access to your system, what's the point? Though this does demonstrate how a hacker could use your machine to hop over to another one with higher privileges on the same network. So from an individual perspective, this isn't all that useful, but if you're trying to hack a corporation it would be much more powerful.

Those uninitiated might think that the commands can grab the PSK from ANY Wi-Fi network in the range that the Wi-Fi interface "is seeing" right now. These are only the networks that the computer has connected to in the past and has the credentials saved. Just to be clear :)

Yes, that's true. I used those commands back in college where they had super-fast internet, but it was only for the teachers. During a break, I asked a teacher if I could use their computer for a short while. I ran the commands, and that's how I managed to access the teacher's unrestricted internet. 😂😂

The paswords are just the saved ones that YOU had to type in on YOUR machine to connect to whatever wifi access points that required a pssword. its literally where your computer looks when it needs to connect to an already established access point. And for those of you saying "ohhh once someone has your wifi password youre compromised. Like no, just change it, just change the whole network name whike youre at it. If youre really at the point that someone has backdoored your machine and os offloading info to their own server, then you have much bigger issues.

The only time you'd start suspecting something is if the hackers do something obvious like create popups on your screen, send mass emails with your email, your cursor moving on it's own, etc.

Well you can even see passwords of wifis you're connected to, just by going to the control panel and the network settings. Really helpful if you forgot it and want to tell a friend or put a new device on.

Windows Certificate Storage should be able to give you those. btw, this whole thing is because of how WPA PSK was designed. no two ways around saving the password(or PKI) in plaintext.

Just go to Network advanced settings and click on the properties of the network adapter for the wifi. CLick the show button on the password and you will see it. No need to remember the command.

I'm a hardcore Linux fanboi, and I'd much rather use "Disk Management" than "fdisk". Heck, I'd rather use Windows' "fdisk" than Linux's "fdisk", the visual formatting by default is just SO much better. Simple tools and rich options are the foundation of goodness, but good defaults are the spice of awesomeness.

this is a "problem" on many linux machines, too, and probably mac also. somewhere, there's just an unencrypted config file with an entry for the wifi network, and one of the lines is just the plain text password. once someone has access to your unencrypted, physical computer, it's kinda game over anyway, though

You can also look at the adapter properties in control panel to do the same thing. If you connect to numerous networks either method can be helpful but the odds of someone using this in a malicious capacity is slim to none.

You can also see them through the Windows UI. It is not a secret, there is an easy way to forget the WiFi informations. You can prevent your Windows to keep these if you work in sensible places. You can also schedule a cleaner that will erase them every day for example.

The only way a hacker can use this command is if they are somehow able to run this command on your local system against profiles that are already configured. You cannot "grab" your neighbor's password out of thin air with this or any other command I'm aware of.
