While BU coins are undoubtedly pretty, VF might be my favorite grade for Morgans. There is enough detail remaining to appreciate the design of the coin, but enough wear to indicate the coin has actual history of significant usage. These coins were spent in saloons, used in poker games, and traded hands in everyday life. And the price point is right for us collectors on a budget!

I agree! Morgans show circulation better than most coins.

I wish I’d kept the best struck 1897-O Morgan had the best strike Ever; I have the 2 Book set by Q David Bowers on US Dollars; he talks about each year and mint and well or how sloppy they were struck; had luster, bagmarks, etc. That coin cost me in trade for a full MS-63 Red 1857 flying eagle cent, 30 years ago! Oh how many folks love their Morgans!

Ben I have an 1884-S Morgan that PCGS graded XF45. You can still tell that the strike was superb. I believe that the obverse was DMPL and the reverse was probably proof-like.The wear is very even and there are hardly any marks on the coin. At a certain angle both the obverse and reverse have a cameo appearance. Even though it is only worth a few hundred dollars, it is one of the Morgans in my collection that I like the most.

Great presentation, Ben! Morgans being one of the most collectible coins on the planet, and there are so many new collectors gobbling them up in almost all the grades, and yet many are shying away from worthy collectible coins that are NOT in slabs. Being able to grade them accurately on your own is a key to acquiring a worthy coin and not getting burnt. There are online grading sites besides what you can get in print form. Thank you, sir!!!

Seems like the obverse almost always seems to wear more than the reverse of the Morgan Dollars. Maybe because the front has more flat spots and wears of more quickly.

Ok pet peeve #1 Extremely fine How is the coin graded or what does it grade ? Fine. How fine ? Extremely fine How - qualifies the predicate = adverb What’s an adverb ? Words that end in LY, words that answer how much, when, where what How fast ? QuickLY or slowLY he ran Very fast. How fast ? Very. Very is the adverb Adverbs - qualify if quantity how what when where why Extra can be an adverb or adjective However when used before fine as in the coin grades “extra fine”, extremely is better English Extra is an adjective when used the way I I Like my coffee with extra sugar Extra us defining the coffee not the sugar. Using extra sugar is the adverb Liking coffee with extra sugar in it is the adjective Please switch to extremely Thanks Carry on

The grammar police, lol, Back before pcgs & ngc, EF-45s mostly had a hint of eagle breast feathers, thusly, when grade-flated 3rd party hit, most of my EF-45s became AU50s, Explain that?

Or you could shop exclusively for certified coins and let someone else figure it out. To be honest the nuances of this kind of grading makes me crazy. I seem to get it wrong more than I get it right.🤔

How do you know they have not been clean??🤔
@fifteenbyfive
@fifteenbyfive 2 жыл бұрын
TCG put up a video or two a long time ago about that. I guess he could revisit it as a video idea. You can search the channel and probably find something. A few quick tips for you: Cleaning includes "whizzed" and "dipped" (rubbed with a physical object like a towel vs dropped into chemical cleaners). To check for whizzing use a loupe to know for sure. You'll see fine scratches all over the surface including the devices. If it's been badly dipped and has no circulation wear it will have subdued luster for an Unc coin, and when you hold the dipped or whizzed coin at a shear angle it will look darker grey almost dark blue to the naked eye. PL or semi-PL coins will look like this too from the same angle so with experience you can distinguish these things. Circulation scratches (chatter) ruins the luster on the open unprotected fields the most, whereas damage from dipping affects every bit of the fields and surfaces alike. A Morgan with full detail but almost no luster (very weak cartwheels) is Unc Details Cleaned.

@@fifteenbyfive I would say you phrased that perfectly. I bought a whizzed Morgan once, and everything you just said matches up entirely. The biggest tip-off I should have seen was the weak and almost nonexistent cartwheel. Beware out there, and take care

All grade to grade jumps are very fine (no pun intended). Sale came be said for VF30 to 35, even 35 to 40. I remember sending a half dozen Barber Quarters in back in 2011 of which 3 were lock 40, snd the other 3 I thought 30/35. 4 graded 35, 2 graded 30. Ownership adding points? Maybe but judge for yourself The 1894 was 40 to me (compare to the 92-S shown first and tell me are they same grade to you? I say not. 99-S and 00-S were my other “40”.’s. The grade to grade jumps are always very subtle and as always still subjective Link to those quarters (I made the video as I was selling them to another collector. Back then his phone wouldn’t receive the video I made - he had android and I had an iPhone and for whatever reason the video text didn’t work) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i96VotSg3723lXU.html
