Thanks for video. Just got back today A big box of coins I sent in for grading that I had bought in the eighties and nineties. Most came back cleaned. And I was not the one that did it. It was most likely the coin dealer I used at the time.

I LOVED your video on the toned seated quarter that you turned into a choice coin that anybody would get googly eyes for! Your laugh in the intro after you asked "did I mess it up? Well..." (then you laughed) It was CLASSIC!

Best of Any!!! I thought I went through most if not all of your videos comparing Morgan and Peace dollars and how to point out cleaned coins and stuff and, I don’t know how I overlooked this one but I’m glad I found it now. This is the BEST video I’ve seen to help me compare my Morgan’s with those in the video and better understand what exactly to look for in cleaned coins. I will be looking at these first thing in the morning. Thanks. Did I tell you thank you? Well, I meant it. 😇🤗

I got into numismatics a long time ago when my grandfather gave me 1921 Peace dollar. It looked kind of dirty so I soaked it in lemon juice overnight. A few months later when I really started getting into the hobby I was really bummed out when I realized what I had done.

Thank you sir for an excellent lesson. I recently took some Morgan's to a local dealer who spotted a fake before I handed it to him, I asked him how? He said that he'd seen a few over the years, lol, I was amazed and po'd at the same time I thought maybe it was cleaned. I guess the new collectors may run into this problem, but the simple fact is that he had nicer coins in BU than I could have bought on ebay for that year and more, food for thought. Your lessons are great!!

Subbed. Thanks for the help, very nice to see a great tutorial of what to look for, or what not to look for, ect.. Typically I just buy the morgans for weight, and if the price is right ($18-20), I'll purchase regardless of condition, depending on spot of course.. However, I'm infatuated with the 1881 morgans since that puts the coin exactly 100 years older than I am, so I'll buy those at $25+ish on ebay..

I think you did a great job describing cleaned coins. I do have a couple of comments though. NGC and PCGS clean coins. They call it conservation. If done properly cleaning a coin may be necessary. If your doing it to deceive for profit then that's obviously a negative. However, some coins, for instance, a proof like coin may have hazy fields. Well sometimes when dipped properly by a skilled professional like yourself Daniel know when a dip will give a coin a possibility at DMPL. So there are really two types of cleaning. Cleaning that's done for profit by altering the coins appearance. Then there is conservation to improve a coins appearance typically for a reason. I believe that 99.9% of all coin dealers have cleaned a coin. Some have cleaned thousands. It was done for profit. Again if done properly it can help a coin. The examples you showed definetly drove your point home. You talked about the negative side of cleaning/conservation and it's a shame. I just wanted to add another dimension to this video. Very well done Daniel.

Look Daniel, I appreciate what you are doing and your obviously knowledgeable and I learn things from you. For 36 years I never wore gloves handling coin of course all of my coins have seen some sort of circulation even if very minute and still in MS grades, like contact marks and stuff. It's when I got into proof coins is where I really felt that gloves were necessary. I've seen some really nasty fingerprints on proof coins and feel like gloves are the best option as opposed to nothing at all with them. I will agree it's kind of unnecessary with all MS or lower coins but when it comes to PR coins I feel a finger or palm print on the mirrored field is problematic.
@CoinHELPu
@CoinHELPu 5 жыл бұрын
You just don't touch anything but the rim. If you're careful about not touching the coin then no fingerprints. If you're putting them in an album I can see using something to press them in. However, in the albums they're susceptible to getting issues. Also the people who handle enough proof to matter don't wear gloves. I don't and I have never ruined a proof.

Good info, especially if stalking eBay deals, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,side note, if you have time in one of your videos to explain to everyone, I sent a 1953 d ddo to ngc, they deamed it to have been "Whizzed" and would not encapsulate it, so should they have encapsulated it and labeled it whizzed since it had been paid for, or, save themselves the time and money by simply sending it back in a flip labeled whizzed ? I have seen them both ways and like more and more the grading system you spoke of about four video's past, where every coin gets equal rights, If you have time, I know yall stay busy, Anyway enjoyed the video, ,,,,Keep em coming,

This is imperative information and I thank you for it - what I realllllly need is some examples of proof-like's that are cleaned vs normal ones - I've got an 1880-s in a NGC slab @ ms64-PL vs a 1878-s, 1881-s, 1885, and 1886 and 1897-s and I cannot tell the difference between them muuuuuch...but I got them from a reputable source that weren't cleaned to their knowledge. I see that your PL is pretty easy to see with the scrubbing lines but what about when you DON'T have the differential color from the fields? I probably should include pictures but I think we both have the same opinion of the internet and people's picture taking skills when it comes to coins - LOL ;). Anyhow - have you got any examples of non-obvious coins that are PL but are simply missing that extra die polish/differential in color - it's just far from cameo but still VERY PL infact the mirrors are DMPL but not dark except in a few especially as the dates get newer...? Help?

I I am a smaller dealer but have sent probably 35 to 40 Morgan's into pcgs that I have dipped in silver cleaner from Walmart and all have been graded ms62 thru ms66 without any being designated as improperly cleaned. So I guess it depends on what chemicals are used. I know it is a crap shoot but so far there has been no problems.

Yes. You can properly cleaned Morgan Dollars and almost all dealers do it. It's when you use something not diluted with water and try to "whizz" out the contact marks is improper cleaning.

I buy Morgan silver dollars as a hedge against inflation. I chose Morgans due to their beauty, intrinsic value, and concomitant recognizability. I am not attempting to collect a set and I routinely clean the ones I buy because I enjoy their brilliance. When push comes to shove, I can trade a "cull" Morgan for food or other goods without the regret a collector who paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for one coin will feel when he becomes desperate. I'm not sneering at collectors; I merely am acknowledging that there is more than one reason to acquire Morgans. The only thing that really rattles my chains are that I have to pay TAX to acquire what is, after all, just money!

But what about tarn-x dipping them won't they look original?
