In this video I demonstrate how to make cleft grafts on an avocado. I do several avocado grafts with different varieties in order to create a multi-grafted avocado tree.

Few people asking for updates. Some took and some didn’t but in the end it didn’t matter so much as this tree is being removed because of a redesign. I’ll do some new grafting videos this spring but will wait for results to publish it all in one video and hopefully make a more useful one stop resource for people. When made I would encourage you to watch those for more detailed information Thanks for watching :) Learn how to graft fruit trees here practicalprimate.com/grafting/

Didn't matter to you maybe, but it matters to us as to which ones took and which ones didn't. Also, I bought some buddy tape, and it was hopeless. Had to tie knot in it, whereas the one you use seems to stretch easily and adhere nicely.

Hi Bernadette! That is really unusual, Buddy tape has always been really good for me. Now days I use parafilm because it is way cheaper and works just as good I find. I have newer grafting videos and have since learned my lesson, I include the results :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iriAaaeqscC-m4E.html

I am going to redo an avocado grafting video as both my grafting and storytelling/videoing technique have improved. Until then I have a clearer video where I topwork a mango tree and show the results (I use the same methods). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iriAaaeqscC-m4E.html

IF the Reed is better, don't take either graft off. Just keep track of them by putting on a bright plastic or metal label on the branch with wire that will stay on for years. And just write the names of each graft on the label. And then it will be easy to keep track no matter how many grafts you have. We have a wonderful tree grown from a seed that we want to graft onto others. It is about as big as your fathers and took about 20 years to produce fruit. I was in high school when we got it from a friend who grew it from a pit from an avocado she bought at the grocery store. And now this tree gave us over 100 avocados this season and every single one of them tasted like a combination of bacon and butter, so we have to have more of them. These are the best avocados we have ever had. Occasionally at the store you get an avocado that tastes like bacon, but every single one of these avocados from our tree has a smooth buttery texture and bacon flavor. We totally won the avocado lottery with our tree. (the avocados on this particular tree have a thin skin and small pits and a lot of avocado meat) We have another tree that has avocados that have thicker skin and taste good, but nowhere near as good as our butter bacon avocado tree and so we will graft scions from our butter bacon on to that tree. Thanks for your great video on grafting and the great idea to do many different varieties on one tree.

Excellent video! Beautifully explained & shot. How did your grafts turn out? :) Based on your video, I did very many cleft grafts on mango (what else?), citrus & avocados. The only thing I did different is that I used rubber bands to tighten the graft and that appears to have increased the success rate to 90%. Nonetheless, thank you so very much. Greetings from Bharat (India). :)

Thank you very much .. in fact I have some questions about the avocado tree grafting 1 / no need to cut the leaves below the grafting point? 2 / In what month/season can we do that? I live in the extreme north of Algeria where there is a mediterranean climate ..maybe like adelaide or perth in australia ... and it can be relatively cold in winter 3 / Have you try the method of the eye called budding .. I prefer it because the weld will be much stronger

Hi! No problem, thanks for watching. I’ll answer your questions as best I can. 1) no that doesn’t matter. Almost all evergreens it isn’t really an issue (and in same cases you need to leave them). 2) In your climate I would do it in spring or autumn, as long as the bud is swelling/about to push. Avoid winter and probably avoid summer there. 3) I have done budding with mangos and citrus but not on avocado. I will try it some time :)

I'm here for some advice on planting saplings. I have dug (the digger man did them really) into hard dry soil which had corn growing on it last year and cassava the year before. I have piled in the old sweet corn stems and any other bits of organic material I could find. Will it be good to burn it and then put more fertilizer in (including cow manure and rice husk)? It will be a mix of root stock and grafted trees. 👍
@PracticalPrimate
@PracticalPrimate 5 жыл бұрын
hi Alan Put the organic matter on top, not in the holes. Other than that it will depend on the soil type. Avocados need perfect drainage so if you have a high clay content (going of the description of hard soil) make sure to mound the soil and plant high.
@heyitsalanhere
@heyitsalanhere 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply. The holes (difficult to count but around 200) are about 1200cm X 60cm and maybe a metre deep (the shovel on the industrial digger couldn't do them any smaller) As I said, the soil is very dry and hard. Not clay soil so it will be well draining. As there probably isn't much nutrient value in it, I thought to fill it up with as much as possible. They won't be getting planted for a few months still so it should mulch down quite a bit. I will take your advice and put mulch on top after planting. I will be watching more of your vids for advice, thanks again 👍
@PracticalPrimate
@PracticalPrimate 5 жыл бұрын
heyitsalanhere no problem! Ahh yess that is sometimes done successfully in very hot, dry climates. Yours may be like that? I advise against it for three reasons. First the decomposing organic matter creates anaerobic conditions around the roots which sets trees back until it completely decomposes. Second in certain soil types it can create a well which drowns the tree. Third as it decomposes the soil sinks which effectively leaves the tree planted too deeply. I hope this helps! Would be very keen to see an update of your project in the future.
@heyitsalanhere
@heyitsalanhere 5 жыл бұрын
@@PracticalPrimate At the moment, it is still very hot and dry. Another few months before the rain season when the trees will be planted. I'm hoping that will be enough time for the materials to break down. Your insights are very helpful and I will try to make sure to compensate and give the trees the best chance. I will hopefully have good news in a few years time and try to remember to update you here. Thanks very much 👍

Can you please answer a question I have, you grafted on a few different varieties on your tree and I am wondering why? I always thought if you were grafting a tree, you would stick with the same variety. Are you doing it to see if you can come up with a new variety? Does a graft affect the entire tree changing the fruit and how many grafts would you do on a tree?
@PracticalPrimate
@PracticalPrimate 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wyndie. I have grafted a few of my trees over to two or three varieties. Everything that grows above the graft point (on that branch or trunk) is the grafted cultivar, it doesn’t affect the rest of the tree. I do it for a few reasons. Better pollination, I like the variety and best of all I choose cultivars with different ripening times so it extends the season. I hope that helps :)

@@wyndiefeatherstone948 Avo’s have a strange flowering habit. There are types A and B. One has male flowers open in the morning with female flowers opening in the afternoon, which obviously causes pollination issues, unless you have both types in close proximity. Having a tree with both A and B types will increase pollination tremendously.

Doing this video was a good idea but with out details its worthless. Make a video that shows a close up of the buds on the scion wood and talk about your thoughts on why you chose the scion you did. Also details of cut and tape. Close ups or no help, except in the general sence. People can get an idea but the needed details are missing. I'm looking for a video like I described. I've taken two grafting classes but no details were given on choosing scion wood

Hi, thanks for the feedback! I will redo it soon, this was one of my first vids, my new ones are more detailed. In terms of scion wood you want mature growth that is just about to bud (depends on where you are). The stick still needs to be green so basically last flush. You don’t want wood that is already pushing new growth, it will die back. Hope that helps!

Why do multi grafting?

It allows for more cultivars in a given space which can provide better pollination, a variety of tastes and an extended season.

reed seedling graft? That's an odd name. I would've called them Chazzwazzers.
