Great Vid and never thought to remove the pins so that I could grease and spin each auger on my big Troy Bilt blower. Quick question for you Sir: Just got this Troy-bilt from neighbor at good price and it is a full metal job from about 15 years ago...last of the Tecumseh big flat head engines. Well built but needing a few adjustments and cleaning. I wanted to change and fill the gear lube in the auger gearbox. Should I just remove the fill plug...stand it up on its front snout...let it drain out thru the fill plug hole...then fill with fresh? Do you think that will work?

Where does that grease go? Isn't there oil in the gearbox? Or are there grease channels to the bearing.?
@moog38yearsagoupdated1mont9
@moog38yearsagoupdated1mont9 4 жыл бұрын
@@terryedmond4492 Based on my first snowblower I got... Your auger should run via the shaft that is connected to the gearbox, all this due to the shear pins/bolts. The grease being what allow the auger to not build rust within the auger "cover" that go around the shaft that run via the gear box. So whent he shear pins/bolts break when you hit something, the grease allow the auger to turn freely without any rust so it don't damage the gearbox.

So....the auger tube doesn't rotate on the shaft because it's locked in position with one (two on mine) sheer pin, but we lube it so...it doesn't rust? I never really got it. And yet there are no grease fittings on the end bearings, the bearings in the gearbox or the bearings on the main shaft, where you actually need grease. Go figure.

It's greased so that when the shear pins DO break, the augers will spin freely on the shaft. If the shaft rusts solidly to the augers, the pins will fail to shear and you risk gearbox damage.

I use Lucas Oil Marine Grease which only costs about $1 more for a 14 oz tube than heavy duty automotive grease. It stays in place better and provides better corrosion protection, especially against salt, which can be an issue if you salt your driveway like I do. Get it at Lowes, Home Depot, Oreilly Auto Parts, etc.

no need to remove shear pins. may i add, you should remove the wheels and grease the axles. also, under the back pan there is one more grease fitting. lastly, change the oil. (I just did all of the above yesterday, bring on the snow)

Your smack on about the preventative maintenance. This is a important part in keeping your 'blower in top notch operation. Aside from the auger many owners do not grease the wheel shafts, chute angle, drive levers, etc. Just takes about 1 -2 hours max every fall, and also during the winter usage to maintain. I do a complete oil change every fall, and calculate the used hours during winter and change the oil again,as these engines are under duress. Oh and maintain proper air pressure in both tires.

Everyone goes to extreme measures to prevent the engine from somehow self starting, I'm all for safty first but in my entire life Never have I ever Seen it, heard about it or been told about it happening to anyone anywhere. Not on a small engine device. On a heavily computerized automobile, yes, but they have been know to spontaneously combust as well. I gotta wonder has anyone ever had their small engine machine just fire up on it's own?
