[HOW TO] Grill and Headlight Removal on a 2015-2022 GMC Canyon (Chevy Colorado Similar)

So my wife had a small fender bender while pulling into our new garage. The brick column won on this battle. Had to get some body work done to fix the paint, and also needed to replace the headlight because it had a big scratch and a broken clip.
I hastily bought a "replacement" grade headlight on eBay because it was half the price of an OEM unit. Well once I got the truck back from the body shop, I found that the replacement was garbage and the reflector housing was loose inside headlight and the aiming screw didn't work, there was also a loose screw rolling around inside, probably the one that connects the adjustment screw to the reflector housing. Luckily I was able to source an OEM unit from a local dealership, this cost $900 + tax + core charge (refundable). Ouch. But the OEM unit is much better quality and I feel better having OEM units on both sides again.
This removal process should be the same for 2015-2020 GMC Canyons, 2021 and 2022 models may vary slightly due to the redesigned front end, but I think it will likely be very similar.
From experience, the process is also very similar on 2015+ Chevy Colorado. Same tools needed and same overall process to removing the parts.

Don't buy eBay replacement grade headlights...stick with OEM. They're more expensive. But worth it.

You are 100% correct. Most aftermarket headlamps are trash. There are some good ones out there and they aren’t cheap. You get what you pay for.

Yea. The ones I bought were 1/2 the cost of OEM. And it was absolutely apparent in the quality. Would not recommend.

That's nuts having to pull the whole front facia grill and bumper to replace a headlight housing unit. I loved my 2003 Silverado..... do the same thing with no tools.... open hood, pull a pin and slide it out. I'm going to polish the headlights on my 2015 Canyon which require sanding and all, but wasn't expecting this.

I agree. That’s the price for aerodynamics though. I recall my 2002 Silverado was VERY easy to remove the headlights. I did so many headlight mods back in the day on that truck. That was before my KZfaq days….

Was gonna be a new set for my canyon but I can’t believe how ridiculously expensive they are. Every other truck is priced accordingly but the canyon is outrageous.

Yea this replacement was almost $900 from the dealer. I couldn’t find a used like new one anywhere. So I was stuck paying dealer price.

Whatever brush guard you buy should have instructions. If they don’t. I would contact the manufacturer.

Once the grille and bumper cover are removed, can the grille be removed from the bumper cover?

Yes. I think it’s just held on with clips.

I recently buy a 2020 canyon with all chrome front grill but i like the black grill that you have is just inserts or i have to buy the all black grill? I think my are just chrome inserts but not sure

My truck is an All Terrain trim. That's how it comes from the factory all blacked out. You can swap the grills between trims. It requires removing the entire front fascia like you see in this video. Good luck.
