After four years of porcelain, ceramic, and glass tile with epoxy and sanded or unsanded grout I am doing my first slate floor with cement grout today. Talk about nervewracking! Thanks so much for the video! Definitely helped with my nerves! We've come a long way, baby!

Very helpful video! Two timing questions: How long do you wait to use the sponge after you have picked up your excess grout? Also, how long do you wait after you sponge to clean up the haze?

This is a bad idea when grouting large areas. It is better to use a grouting bag that lays grout in the crevices as if edging a cake between tile, then go behind it with a trowel to make the edges straight followed by a moist sponge, one of the large yellow ones, to clean up the excess and add a little bit of water to the grout which gives it the finished look. Most important advice to take from this is to use the grout bag and always keep the sponge clean. This involves a lot of water and wrinkly fingers from constantly dipping sponge to clean. If you keep things very clean, you won't even get a haze. We barely had any clean up once our floor was installed. It was a 500 sq ft lanai of slate till, not honed.

Grout bags are a waste of time. With a good grout release sealer, using a float is just fine. Plus if you're familiar with a float, you can easily fill joints without smearing grout all over the tile

My wife and I once laid slate in our kitchen, and unfortunately did not clear the grout soon enough. We ended up with not only "haze", but a mess that had to be worked off with a wire brush and chemical strippers. To this day it is still a bit mucked up. So, WARNING everyone, don't try to do a large area. Keep it small, and clean as you go, or your beautiful slate floor will turn into the nightmare project from hell!

We have done two small entryways with slate tile and we are about to do the kitchen. I prefer charcoal grey grout because it does not discolor from the dirt my husband and son drag in. Each spring I clean the area well and reseal the floors with two coats of "shine". They look great after years of tough use.

Thanks so much for this awesome video so there only thing i have a question on is this. I am reusing already grouted tiles and they have some on the back that i can't remove. Can i still do this? Also do i have to stick the tiles down before i grout? What would i use for that?

Hey Jane! I just discovered your channel and LOVE it!. I have an old 1960's slate tile floor. (Think irregular shape tile pieces that look like stepping stones or a mosaic pattern). What is the best way to re-grout? Do I have to remove all the grout first? (There are chunks of grout which have broken off and lifted out) If so, what is the best tool you like to use to remove grout?

So, another question: we have laid a ceramic mosaic (~2 inch) tile. Should we seal that in a bathroom floor before grouting? Or just after? Feeling pretty confident after the drywall videos helped us so much. Don't want to goof up now :) Thank you!
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 8 жыл бұрын
+Allison Sorg Hi Allison, most ceramic tile does not need to be sealed, just the grout. So when it comes to sealing the grout, you should follow the directions of the grout manufacturer.

How much thickness difference is normal? It seems impossible to level all of them. Can grout helps smoothing the uneven edges?
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 9 жыл бұрын
Le Wang Thickness differences are the nature of un-gauged slate. It is that characteristic that is very appealing to many homeowners. There are a few things you can do to help level the un-gauged slate better. The first method is back-buttering. An additional method to use in combination with the first is to first sort through all of the tiles you plan to lay, and create piles of similar thicknesses. Put thin tiles in one pile, medium thickness in another, and very thick in another pile. What this technique does is allow you to dry fit and plan your slate tile rows prior to actually laying them permanently. Hope this helps and good luck with your project.

well let me tell you that i just paid someone to make my bathroom floor with a beautiful natural slate tile i purchased in Daltile like 2 years ago and just now i finished the project, but the person who did the floor didn't know what he was doing, now my floor is really Haze and also dirty of the grout that he left dry to long over the tile , now my question is , is out there any solution to removed or clean the grout from the tile? thanks ....

Ann Gill Thank you!! you just saved me. I was sitting on my new laundry slate tile floor tonight crying because I started a section and the haze wouldn’t come off. Fortunately I had a bottle of acetone in my pedicure kit and it is coming off. I cannot thank you enough, we have canceled the delivery of our washer and dryer several times over the last few weeks, and are officially almost out of clean clothes-with it scheduled to arrive this Saturday… I’m so glad I continued to navigate through videos in my desperation - especially the replies here and found yours.. 🤗💝🤗

Natural Stone can also get stained from the grout, which is especially bad if eg grouting light color marble. Makes clean up easier too.

Slate is sold with significant variation in size, don't think that you can just adjust accordingly to give symmetrical grout joints without cutting every edge on a saw. The only way around it is to purchase an expensive, but handy, tile stretcher at your local tile store.
