How to Grout Floor Tile - A Better Way that is Faster, Cleaner and Cheaper

I don't use the traditional grouting method, which involves smothering the grout all over the floor tile. I always thought that method didn't make too much sense. Why smother the grout on the entire floor when only about 10% or less is needed?
Instead I use a grouting bag (mason bag) to grout my floor tiles. I do this for 3 main reasons:
1. It's faster to apply IMO,
2. Cleaning is much easier and faster,
3. I ensure that my grout is going into the seems/grooves
An added bonus is you end up using much less material. For this project I grouted 2 bathrooms that were 5'x8' and I used 1/2 bag of 25 lbs Maipai grout. The bag is about $15, so I spent less than $8 in material.
With this method I spent roughly 30 minutes per bathroom, which included:
- Grouting,
- Pointing,
- Cleaning
I do want to say that I would probably not use a grout bag on smaller tile like, Subway or Backsplash tile. For those jobs, I apply the grout all throughout.
Through my experience I have learned to become more efficient with my work. I found that taking the time to think about a better way to do the job is time well spent.

I did a whole bathroom this way. Grouting for the first time ever using epoxy grout. I masked the tiles off with masking tape along the gaps and used a razor blade to cut off the bits where the tape went over a gap at the intersections. Piped right into the gap, making sure it went deep into the gap. Went over the surface with a tool (steel ball on a stick). Then took off the masking tape and wiped any minimal smudges left on tile surfaces with alcohol on a rag. Taping setup took a little extra time but cleanup was a breeze and wastage was minimal.

I've been setting tile for 20 years.Please don't use his method, this grout will break out .The whole point of a rubber float pressing the grout is to get it to flow all the way down to the substrate and up under all the edges of the tile .

Appreciate the feedback especially from a pro. Q. Wouldn’t pressing with the pointing tool or something similar achieve the same objective of pressing the grout into the open space? I could use the bag and a float to press down I suppose.
@geoffhazel2
@geoffhazel2 2 жыл бұрын
that's exactly what I was thinking. this does not ensure full fill between the tiles, but spreading and pressing extra in with a grout float will accomplish that. Plus running a hard pointing tool over the edges of the tiles not ideal either.

Glad to hear it & thanks for watching and supporting, really appreciate the positive feedback. Make sure you check your lines to ensure full penetration of the grout into the lines. Also, where the tile meets the tub run a bead of silicon since it’s two different materials and the tub will move causing grout to crack. Silicon will give that seem flexibility. Good luck 👍🏼

Try using one of those caulk spreader hand tools. The one i got is a yellow plastic handle with a rubber triangle with different angled nubbs on the ends.. i use it for caulk edges mostly because the finger method went out the door after i sliced it open too much and splinters suck when you get that finger moving quick... but the im betting youll like the tool over the tuck pointing knife...

I am definitely not a full time tile guy, but I have used the float before. I am thinking a hybrid technique where I use the bag and float? What do you think? @@TrueGritDevelopment I am a full time tile guy. Empty the entire bucket of grout all at one time. It stays fresher when its all together too. Don't put it back in the bucket if you have extra. Trash it. And don't mix up so much next time. I mix it with one of my grout floats in a small pail. The float can scrape the powder off the sides of the bucket, and using a drill to mix is not recommended by most grout manufacturers because it adds too much air. I would comfortably have had that bathroom spread in 10 minutes. I use a grout float in each hand. Rubber gloves, knee pads. Let it set up until joints are firm, then a quick wash with a quality sponge to define the edges of the grout lines. Then immediately hit it with a microfiber spin mop to get all of the extra moisture and haze off of the floor. Wipe down the already mostly clean bucket, and clean off the floats. Done.

Thank you! You’re absolutely correct about rushing. I made sure to go back and examine all the lines and make sure they’re full before drying time. I did not have my bucket and drill to mix the grout, so wasn’t as smooth and easy to come out of the bag. I do love using this technique as it elimates the need to dip a float in the bucket to grab the grout and that saves so much time in my opinion. Hey, thanks for watching!

Says it would be faster however I would have been done with the entire floor by the time he was halfway. I use the traditional method but I don't smear it all over the surface of the tile. Nice idea that doesn't quite hit the mark. I'm betting you have air gaps in the seams and pressing out the grout is much harder than using traditional methods. You also smear grout when you washed, and you used dirty water. Not much different than traditional grouting in that respect. If grout was more the consistency of caulking, then maybe this would be a great idea. Mnthey could sell it in cartridges, like caulking.
@TrueGritDevelopment
@TrueGritDevelopment 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. In my experience any method you use can leave gaps, it’s all about good workmanship and I think you’d agree with me on that. I did use diluted water, I think I mentioned that in the video too lol. While some grout did smear over the tile, it’s far less than traditional by a mile, again in my experience. I go back & check all my work for gaps and/or inconsistencies, I think I mentioned that too. Also, I don’t use this method on wall tile, only on floors. Much less water hits the floors, so even if I somehow missed a spot, floors are more forgiving than shower walls that, well, get showered with water 😄. Appreciate the feedback. Ps. I think they do have tubes

It does seem strange to spread grout over 40 sq ft of tile rather than just the 7.75 sq ft of combined grout lines. I like it. I bet you could go in to a dollar store & find some funky plastic kitchen utensil thats perfect for running down the grout lines. A wide plastic putty knife is great for collecting all the excess grout pieces on the floor, plus wont damage tile or made horrid nails on chalkboard sound!

This guy is clearly new to the game. If you use quality grout floats you can not only pack thr grout down inbetween the lines where it needs to fill the mortar groooves and solidify with the mortar underneith. And when turned on its side it would squeege the grout off the tile. This dude took 3 times longer than he wpulf have with a float. He obviously has touch sensory issues. Dont do this
@TrueGritDevelopment
@TrueGritDevelopment 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, I think it’s a matter of preference. I have used both techniques and I don’t agree with what you said completely. When using the edge of the float as you indicated you will still end up with a lot of grout on the surface of the tile, and when you’re using textured tile it’s even worse. I’ve had professionals use a float to grout slate tile on a job and I had to spend hours getting the dried grout out of the crevices, how would you grout Slate? You are also assuming the mason bag technique is inadequate, I haven’t had any failures, have you? Lastly, I never claimed this is the end all be all technique for grouting, I simply stated that from my experience this is faster, cleaner and less costly because you are using less grout. With that said I appreciate your feedback, I like to hear other professionals opinions/experiences as I continue to improve my skill set. Thanks for watching and supporting ✊🏼

@@TrueGritDevelopment great video. I can appreciate all techniques that lead to a happy client.I know plenty of guys who do it this way and just go back and caulk if/when it cracks, and they have no issues with that. But technically adding silicone after the grout does nothing for expansion, it may still have expansion issues because you filled a void that was meant for a more flexible product Regardless, it doesn't really matter it looks like you do fine work.

Couple people said the same below, but I have yet to hear anyone confirm they had issues with this method. Here is a reply from an earlier comment: “Have not had any issues with this technique. As long as the grout is pushed into the space, you should not have any issues. Especially when using textured tile like slate, this technique is far better than normal as the grout doesn’t make its way in the nooks and crannies of the tile. Have you used this technique before? You can’t just say this is NOT how you do it because you don’t do it this way. It’s logical, the mason bag squirts the grout into the grooves, then it’s pushed firmly into space. Plus, I specifically mention that I only do this on floor tile with bigger spacing between tiles NOT on wall tile. Try it for yourself, you will like it 👍🏼
