The next video in this new monthly series features my alocasia micholitziana! I talk more about the journey this plant has been on with me along with my care. It was a massive alocasia that went downhill and it has made a beautiful comeback in pon. I'll link my previous videos in this playlist below!

I adore my Frydeck Micholitziana. Velvet Elvis is constantly in my top 5 fav! When I first was gifted my baby Frydeck in 2020. I had the same experience with the 3 leaf, one dying off cycle. I too thought it was just how this plant lived, and same again! My died off and I swear to you, I also brought mine 'back to life' thru the stump.👏🏼 Hurray for experiments working!! And thanks to you Melissa, I was confident when choosing to move to Pon. I'm SO grateful to you for sharing all of your experiences and knowledge. You have not only influenced some of my purchases 😈😏 You have enriched my plant knowledge extensively. And now a year later, here we are just watching you blossom into a small business owner. It's been wonderful following your journey. Thank you for allowing us to be apart of it. So happy I found you. 💚 🥰

I love my Alocasia frydek (non variegated). I fell in love with yours some time ago and I’ve been trying and struggling with all specimen. This past winter, I switched her to pon and got her a fancy light. She stopped yellowing on the edges and has kept several leaves. I recently removed the light, thinking “it’s spring/summer, she should be fine.” She was NOT fine lol she root rotted and gave me smaller leaves in return. Overall, I’m always trying to please her. She’s stunning. I pay little to no attention to my variegated Frydek and she was expensive, as you could imagine. But this one has a hold on my heart. She’s my baby. 🥹

I only have 3 varieties of Alocasia but 6 corms of my Poly in one pot plus the stump in another. They are all in Pon except the Poly and as I had bought a Pon substitute originally and wasn’t sure how much, if any, it contained of slow release fertiliser, I added a little more. I now have a large bag of Lechuza Pon so plan to transfer the Poly from leca to Pon in the spring. I look forward to watching anything you have in your playlist about growing with Pon. I’ll also start using my Foliage Focus for the Hoyas and any other plants I have in Pon so far, slowly taking it up to full strength by spring. Thanks so much for a very informative video Melissa, keep them coming. Happy growing 💚

Mine grew a LOT since the 5 months I have it. I agree semi hydro is the way to go, as the yellowing leaves are sacrificed when new leaves need nutrients and water to support and if they don’t get it they will flop the oldest leaf. With semi hydro the deterioration of the old leaves are a lot less drastic. I have mine in semi hydro, using pafcal chips. I use Canna Vega A+B full strength for nutrient water. Pest is not an issue with mine because I just spray it down and wipe the leaves twice a week. Sounds high maintenance but it’s quite therapeutic. One last thing: i had another plant and it was doing great until I listened to another KZfaqr who suggested transitioning it to water to get rid of the soil roots and grow water roots. It did not work for me and it started giving out sour smell and even the water roots eventually rotted off. My current plant luckily came in pafcal already so it need no transition. When repotting it I jut used more pafcal chips and not disturb the original root mass.

I tried Pon ( my own mix) about 3 years ago. I lost a couple plants and got scared so went back to a chunky mix. I am now in the process of going back to Pon. I actually have a variegated Thanksgiving cactus and 3 Hoya still in the Pon from 3 years ago! I would never use Leca because to me it is so ugly! Haha. It just looks so unnatural to me. Pon is easy to make. There are recipes online. Use your own fertilizer. I rinse my Pon before use. I just put it into the pot prior to planting and let the water run over it until clear. I love Melissa's videos!

I got a Frydek as a little corm 7 months ago. It was my first ever alocasia and for some reason it's absolutely thriving. I must have been lucky to hit on all the conditions it really likes because its leaves are getting bigger and bigger. Each one is so unique and stunning. I do baby the heck out of it. It grows in LECA, gets distilled water + nutrients, lives in my IKEA cabinet. I'm a little scared when it outgrows the cabinet because it won't have such perfect conditions. Growing alocasias in semi-hydro does seem to be a winning formula. The roots grow like crazy and the leaves are perfection.

I feed mine at the production dose at the 1 tsp per gallon every week and that seems to be enough nutrients right now. It might not be up taking nutrients appropriately if you’re feeding at that dose and it’s still not growing in good light. I think an upsize should help if it’s in a tiny pot 🫶🏻

It could possibly be the genetics of your particular plant. Have you tried growing out a corm from it to see if the variegation differs? You could also try more light depending on how much light your current spot gets to see if it brings out more variegation.

I bought mine a while ago! I stocked up last time and bought like 4 big bags. I hear it was back in stock today but I must have missed it because I don't see it available now.

The way I was doing it definitely caused issues but rainwater has nitrogen and is great water to use. I think mine just got contaminated so who knows what was in it 😭

I’ve been using rain water from roof with no issues so far. The algae is becoming an issue since the start of warmer weather.

I pretty much only use rain water for my plants and have no issues. I have a few barrels I collect in. I don’t have gutters so it’s basically run off from my roof and rainfall and my plants are perfectly happy. So don’t be discouraged, you can always start using it on a few plants and see how that goes instead of on your whole collection. Also would recommend that your barrels have lids to store so you don’t get mosquitoes. I actually drop in a mosquito dunk when collecting and once full there shouldn’t be any problems with lids on the barrels.

@@plantsbymelissaAll you have to do is boil any water to remove contaminants and trace minerals i.e. in tap water, rain water (which is usually good but depends on how it's collected).
