For today's video I am upsizing my 4 alocasia micholitziana plants in lechuza pon. I have 2 green velvet and 2 variegated "frydeks." They have been transferred over to semi-hydro for 6 months now and they all need to be repotted. I found lots of corms to grow out too! I am still trying to figure out my care with pon and the fertilizer regimen so I think after this repot it will give me a good idea of how they handled it and what I need to look out for.

I do not mess with the root Pon ball when I transplant in to a bigger pot usually, unless I feel the need to clean up the root ball to remove any little bits of rot. For Monstera's and most Philodendrons when I see the level indicator has reached to the bottom, I wait about 4 -5 days max before filling reservoir again to ensure I don't over water , BUT some plants like the consistency of moisture and can handle it, like Syngoniums and Adansonnii from my experience. Hope this helps. ❤❤🤗🤗Love your videos Mellissa!

You were asking about what we do with old pon. If the plant is healthy, I don't remove any of the pon, I backfill around it and add back in any pon that fell out. All the pon around the root zone is full of beneficials which can take a while to repopulate if you start with new, so I try and keep as much of it as I can. If the plant is sick, after I remove all the pon and pick out all the detritus I rinse it, soak it in water with Physan 20 for 10 minutes, rinse it again then store it back in a bin.
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 5 ай бұрын
Much appreciated!! Thank you so much for sharing! I didn't realize that about the beneficials but I understand now. Great tip with the physan 20!

Lechuza does sell planters with a removable cash pot insert....they are called "Classico LS" a bit more money but I love them, I find the inserts a dream as it is easy to remove and flush and clean inside the reservoir.

You are right about the yellowing. My two dracenas are very root bound and turning yellow on some leaves but I didn’t want to upsize them as I’m out of pots. Lol. I did the cutting of the roots by 1/3 and that’s when the yellowing started
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 5 ай бұрын
I'm worried it could be an imbalance of the nutrient water but I'm hoping it just wanted to be repotted 🥺 aw I hope your dracaenas can bounce back for you here!

Hi there, beautiful Alocasia! (Edit: I was quick to comment lol, I see now you have addressed the problem with the pot) I honestly think that you should have chosen the Lechuza Classico Premium LS 28 (perhaps future projects). It is easier to manage with the ring handle, which allows you to pick up the whole pot if you need to drain any excess water. It also allows you to inspect the roots later on when the plant sends water roots, which you can't do with this particular one. It is more expensive tho. Regarding the pon, I highly recommend that you take the pot outside, remove the drainage screw (located under the pot), and hose it down for a couple of minutes. The accumulation of dust can clog the water reservoir.
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 5 ай бұрын
Thank you!! I ordered the LS one after a few others commented on it haha I wasn't thinking about it when I ordered it and it didn't dawn on me until after I potted it in there 😆 I'll switch it out when I get it 🫶

I do the same thing you do when upsizing alocasias. I take it out and plop it into its bigger pot and fill the pon around it again. I don’t mess with the roots. Whatever you are doing is definitely working. Your variegated Frydeks and Micholizianas are gorgeous! And the huge corms… Wow! I grow in glass with no drainage but am going to now try self-watering pots (which I already use for my anthuriums) because of how amazing yours look.

I agree, plop and fill is how I do it too (unless there are any issues in the PON like root rot or bugs, then messing with the roots and changing PON may be necessary), also for my bigger pots I do mix my pow with leca and perlite to make the weight more manageable for me and the plant roots too. Looks great and thanks for sharing.

Melissa, I hope you won't end up rottening that huge baby. Don't forget the plug at the bottom of new pot. And what if there's too much fertilizer. You'll have to watch that each day. I probably would have gone easy on the water and watched it each day and I probably wouldn't have added any extra nutrition since the pon has it. The largest pot I'll ever have is maybe 12" cause I want to be able to handle every plant. But most of my plants will be under 10" . And dollar tree has those roller bases for 1.25 if you want to put your large pots on wheels. Your plants are beautiful and thank you for sharing. I always enjoy. I don't even remember ever seeing your husband in other videos until your birthday one. Hope you had a blessed birthday and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Editing takes so much of my time 😊 YT ad revenue tanks after the holiday season so now I am getting paid even less for my videos which sucks. I can't even go the sponsor route because it's such a headache trying to negotiate with brands and looking through their ridiculous contracts and all these extra demands you didn't discuss for such little compensation. @@plantsbymelissa Thank you!!! 🙏 I hope so as well. I posted for help on the discord chat. My majestic cutting is not happy 😔 On a good note, I purchased a large Esqueleto that was on a coir pole, transferred to moss, and I’m seeing moss pole roots 🥹

Idk why but I was expecting all the old pon to fall off, but the roots were really holding on to it wow!

Wow! Just wow! Those alocasias are awesome. Well done. I’m sure you would have heaps of takers for those corms and will easily recoup the cost of your new big pot. I would love one of your corms but I’m in Australia! 😔 You are the Alocasia Queen Melissa. So clever. 🙏🎆

I normally like to do a water phase before a pon transfer in hopes that roots will shed off in the water instead of the pon (only because I hate picking them out when I’m sterilizing the pon to reuse) but they don’t seem to hurt anything if they’re left. I’ve got lots of alocasias sitting with rotted soil roots in no drainage (glass) pon and it’s not much but an eyesore. Also, I’d recommend trying a glass set up. You could see the water line, check on roots anytime, and it’s cheaper to buy glasses depending on where you find them.

The corms!!!! 😲😲😲😲😲 Everyone I follow who use pon say it's good for 2 years so don't worry I guess! I'm sorry that you have to buy an other planter... They're so expensive 😢 but apparently they're very amazing planters! Leafy Diva bought a kind a mesh to put in hers so the roots don't go in the bottom part and snap off like it did for you 😊

I’ve seen people put a layer of tule at the bottom of the pot so that roots don’t grow into the reservoir.

I felt the exact same about Lechuza pots. Not having a cache pot is frustrating. And with the price, it’s a no brainer to just keep going with the cheap Amazon pots 😆
@andrearea213
@andrearea213 5 ай бұрын
I love lechuza pots, but they have a few different varieties. I use the one you got (classico) for my soil-based plants (though that one is still totally fine for semi-hydro, you just can't see what's going on in the reservoir). For my semi-hydro plants, I use the classico ls, which has an inner pot you can lift out, so you can access the reservoir. For my pon transfers, I just plop and fill with very little root disturbance. I have had very few issues with root rot in pon, so I rarely even check anymore, unless I have reason to.

wow seeing your alocasia in that size pot makes me want to try lechuza I have my zebrina that's about as big as the first micholitziana in a pot the same size you upsized it to and I need to water it every 2 days in my mix 😅
@plantsbymelissa

wow! your zebrina must be so beautiful!! It might be stressful to change substrates if it's happy in your mix but I can see how watering it so often can be a lot! Pon has definitely helped me with watering inconsistencies. I love it so much so I hope I can get it all figured out and the plants do well with it over time here 🫶

I think the size of some of the semi hydro pots are a bit misleading. They will advertise as 5 inch or 7 inch, but the cache pot inside will be closer to 3 inch or 5 inch. And then they’ll have this big reservoir that you know only gets filled a small amount. I wish there were more varieties of larger sized mesh or cache pots out there.
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa 5 ай бұрын
Yes, that is very true! I think the smaller ones I use are advertised as a 5 inch but they say 4.7 inch for the inner pot but then the space inside is smaller because of the reservoir so it's like 4 inches lol.

What an incredible beauty! I bought just a teensy corm and I'm regretting it because it had two leaves, lost both, gained a new leaf, but I have had to keep it in perfect humidity or it crashes on me. I'm sure that when the weather gets nice and humid, it will be easier. Do you regularly get spider mites on yours? I find that I have to treat mine for that at least a few times a year if not even more often. And where and when do you sell your plants?

The bottom plug is for draining/ leaching the pon. Also, I think I heard somewhere that fertilizer added to water reduces pH, so it would be interesting to see if the fertilized water has a lower pH with the test kit
@plantsbymelissa

Yes, I tested the PH after I had the fertilizer sitting for about ~15 minutes and I had to add less drops of my PH down solution for foliage pro compared to GTFF.
