The avocado tree makes a great house plant if you follow a few simple tips.
If you'd prefer to buy a tree instead of growing your own go to: www.guacfarm.com

Your words of wisdom are priceless as many others have noted. Bob Ross used to say there are only happy mistakes, your prove if it did not work the first time, just try again, not exactly a very pricey thing to do. In the end growing stuff is good for everyone.

Well, thank you for that pruning demonstration! I've got one growing almost a foot tall in a pot with just one big green leaf left on it. I didn't know how to help it. I haven't pruned it because I thought it needed the leaf to stay alive! Now I know it doesn't. I started 4 avocado seeds in water and now I've got 4 baby trees potted, each with their own personality. One of them is a total success without any help and the others are great teachers. And so are you, thank you!

Maro first thing is first in order to get fruit in around 5 years you will have to graft you avocado plant very soon as soon as it reaches the thickness of a pencil if you don't graft you will have to wait anywhere from 8 to 12 years. If you don't know how to graft check videos out here from the same person he is super good.
@kimhicks4781
@kimhicks4781 2 жыл бұрын
@Maro Nalla You could buy one grafted tree to be sure to get some good tasting fruit than at a later date buy some scions and graft on to your seedling. You can buy scions to graph onto your seedlings or if you know someone with a tree that is fruiting they may give you a branch from their tree. Unless you graph a scioñ you could wait and water for years and miss out on Avacados when you could buy a fruiting Avaçado and have fruit fairly soon. I am going to buy a Gem that's semi dwarf and fruits every year and a Reed that fruits every other year. Both are smaller trees and the Reed is slim and upright and the Gem is bush and note as tall. More wide. Then I would like some scion branches to put on seedlings with a variety of different Avaçado types. For sure would like a Nabal plus many other good àvacado variety to pick from. This way you don't have to wait many years to enjoy this super food according to experts. Good luck. Sounds like your doing good with your seedlings. I think you have a great climate for growing. 👍🏼

Soren, thank you for reaching out. I used to travel to Erlangen on occasion. Beautiful part of the world. Anyhow, no it's not too late. One thing you can do is look for new horns of growth and pinch them off with your fingers, that should trigger lateral growth. Do you keep them indoors?
@sorenhutter1153
@sorenhutter1153 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I keep them indoor. Sorry but I don't really understand what you mean. So I shouldn't cut it but just keep it from growing vertically by controlling the growth? thanks for your advice :)

@SleepyLizard 3 жыл бұрын
@@sorenhutter1153 You can do either. You can cut it or you can just pinch the new growth. both methods will give you lateral growth.

There’s a small place in California, 20 minutes close from San Francisco where the population is 80 % latinos, mostly Mexicans and they planted in their front or back yards avocado trees that are giving hundreds of fruits! The oldest trees are around 50 yo. The average weather in this small city varies from 44 F to 77 F and rarely below 36 F or above 88 F. If I google the question: What zones can avocado trees grow? This is the answer: “Avocado are subtropical trees, accustomed to warm weather and semi humid climates. They only grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 8 through 11, but they don’t do well throughout those zones” But if I google the question like this: Does avocado trees grow around SanFrancisco Area? It show this: “Yes, it is true, you can successfully grow avocados in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout low elevation Northern California” *It is right the avocado trees grow more successfully right around the equator (latitudes at the 0 degree). However, avocado trees can grow in warm, frost-free gardens between the latitudes of 30 degrees north to 35 degrees south. *A better choice when growing avocado trees in zone 8 is the Mexican avocado, which can tolerate temps down to 19-20 F. *Having a avocado tree is a great investment because avocados are expensive! Here around San Francisco just one avocado 🥑 can cost between $0.60 to $3.00 dollars. *All this is just information, I’m fan of Mother Nature and avocado trees 😊

Okay, so last year I got a cabbages sized avocado from a Asian grocery. I put the rather large seed into a glass jar with tooth picks. It was a wide mouth jar abd the seed nearly filled it. I set it in the windowsill and after several weeks of nothing happening, I forgot about it. No water nothing. Several weeks later, it's 5 degrees outside, and I notice that the Avacado has sprouted with about a two and a half foot stemannd it's growing toward the crack in the window where the upper so I slipped. Leaves were growing, happy with the cold. Having no place to plant it. It stayed in that jar, just being watered every once in awhile, until about 3 weeks ago when I finally got a pot for it and some soil. Two days ago, I noticed something strange growing out if the top... I think it's blooming. I think I have a cold loving, one year blooming avocado!

Hello from cold Russia 🇷🇺 Thank you for this amazing channel! I’m growing avocado as my first plant (had troubles growing really anything before) and my roommate told me it looked as if it had not enough sun. By your videos I understood that everything is right 👌 now I only need to try pruning and i have a question: is there any specific place where you should cut or just where you feel like?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 2 жыл бұрын
Furious, the best place to start pruning would be when the very top starts to push out a new horn of growth you can just pinch that off with your finger. Otherwise if you want to cut the stem go up about 12 inches or so.

Last year I grew lemon, mango and avocado plants. Sadly to say that they all did not survive due to spider mites, I probably used to much pesticide on them and me being an over protected plant mother (if you want to look at it that way). I'm going to try again this year, but I think I'm having issues with getting my mango seeds to grow.

Question: is it possible to wait too long to do the first pruning? my little tree is under a year old (but getting close to a year since i first started sprouting it), and i've never pruned it because i didn't realize i needed to until now. it's just a long (3 foot tall) stem with leaves coming off the sides all the way up -- no branches. And to prune it, would i only take off the top leaves, or would i take them ALL off? thanks so much, really enjoy your videos!
