As I was a child I collected acorns and planted them into the soil in our garden. The result was that we got some wonderful big oak trees. They need many years to grow but after 40 years they were really beautiful trees and I was very proud of having planted them.

Thank you. Was actually looking for some info on getting oak seedlings going. This showed me how easy it's going to be.

Hi there, I have lived in France for twenty years and have been rewilding 10 hectares of my land. I am currently removing my 15 year old first cover of goat willows (absolutely necessary if you dont want acres of brambles and thistles) and replanting with oaks, birches and chestnuts. Most of these are now two or three years old. I put acorns and chestnuts into compost filled buckets and put them under hedges. (No need to worry about drying out) At 24 inches high I separate them out and plant bare rooted in glades of six to ten trees. After four or so years I move the smallest. Oak trees don't like being transplanted until 3 years old, even then be careful of the tap root. I have probably planted around two thousand broadleaf trees in this way. If you have a hedgerow of oaks with open field on anything other than the north side, then windfalls will grow like weeds in the open sunlight. However, from what i've seen I think even the windfalls are helped by Jays burying hundreds of them where they fall. Interestingly I have more than 20 self seeded sweet chestnuts (marroniers) and the nearest mature sweet chestnut that they could have come from is 700 meters away. So, definitely not gravity alone for them. Bisous, Bri.

Thank you found your channel whilst searching for information with my young son. We recently went foraging, found some acorns. We are making nut butter. Anyway we found one in our small batch that had seeded. So we just planted it ..thank you! X

Just a last thought. For long tap rooted trees, plant in the 30 inch high cut flower buckets available cheap from florists. Then in winter, empty the pot out on its side keeping the soil intact and plant into a hole made with a post hole drill. Yes I know ! Probably too much fuss unless you have the kit available but......

I've done this with the white oaks that sprout in Fall and red oaks that sprout in Spring. I find they don't like being in pots. They won't tolerate the tap root being cut. They don't survive freezing in pots above ground during the Winter. The tap root doesn't like being pot bound at all. And squirrels will eat the acorn even after it has sprouted and squirrels, rabbits and deer will eat the tender sprouts. Other than that, they're "easy". LOL I have used the 1.75L milk and juice "wax" paper containers for tall pots. They mostly make it thru the Winter.

I had an apple tree that I bought from a nursery which when I went to plant it up into a bigger pot, I discovered there were some acorns in with the compost it came in which had started to grow a root. I then potted those up separately and they've grown.

Humans can give brains and direction to nature if they so choose. They don't need to be a detriment. I've learned to go many things from seed now. I get excited and want to grow all the things. Trouble is, when I get the seedlings going, I can't keep up preparing places to plant them! 😅

That's how I got the acorns from a neighbors yard. Can't plant outside. Squirrels stole them. Now they are growing inside. TOO cold to plant them. They are growing in my house. I don't know how to replant so they will be ready to plant in 5 months!

I don't think this was worth making a video about. Isn't it pretty obvious that if you plant a germinated acorn, it will grow into an oak tree?

You could say that about any subject, anything is obvious to those who know how to do it but if you don't know you don't know.

Yeah, no sense hoping for apples. But it's nice to pot them up, especially considering the majority of them don't make it under the parent tree, plus you eventually get to plant them where they want them.
