This video is a detailed description of How to grow Blueberry Bushes Part 5 - How to Root Blueberry Plants (Blueberry Propagation). I describe in this video how to take Blueberry cuttings for propagation. The proper time to attempt rooting Blueberries and the tools I use to root Blueberries. It is actually easy to propagate Blueberries in the late spring or early summer. Blueberries are one of the easier fruit plants to root.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing your expertise. I am planning to root my blueberry plants in June but I live in southern Quebec where we can have -20° Celsius temperature in the winter. Should I protect the cuttings over their first winter if so how and where? I have a cold greenhouse and a heated garage at 12° Celsius (54° F) with special lightings where I grow my vegetables seedlings. We usually get our first frost in early October and the coldest temperature is from January to March. The cuttings would be about 4 months old by the first frost. Thank you for your advice.

Jim, You have me hooked on blueberries. However, it is the 1st of July and in the mid 90's. I am trying to root some green cuttings in the mixture you use and then slide under your deck with the dome covering. With the high temps of 90-95 do I keep them outside in 100% shade so they can get some light or bring them indoors.

Hi Jim. Please tell me, does the humidity level affect the rooting process? The fact that I put the cuttings from last year's shoots in early March, the PH of the water is stable 5,0, the air temperature during the day 25-30 C Celsius at night 16-20 C. after 4 weeks, small leaves began to germinate, some even had shoots 4-5 cm long, the end of may all the leaves died. Cuttings continue to remain green and not rooted. Irrigation is done with sprinklers 40 l/h, every 8 minutes, throws for 10 seconds. All this happens in the open field where the humidity during the day at the level of 30-35%.

Great video! Thanks for putting it out there. Do you have any suggestions for something on a smaller scale. I'm in Zone 8a (DFW) and am looking for a smaller scale option, something that can handle maybe 3 or 4 cuttings at a time. Our summers get pretty hot (mid to upper 90s generally). Would the Tupperware type setup work keeping the container in the shade and misting the plants every day (or every other day)?

This is an old question but others may be interested too. What my mom taught me to do for just a few is to get an old flower pot. The 3 gallon size like you buy plants in from Lowe's or other garden center works great. Put your potting medium in about 1/3 of the pot deep. Prep your clippings and stick them like he has done here. Don't forget to moisten the soil and mist them after sticking. Then get a white kitchen garbage bag (still lets light in) and sit the pot inside, then close up the top of the bag with a twist tie or something that you can take off to mist the cuttings every so often. Place it in a shady area outside where it will still be warm but not in the direct sunlight and be sure the top is pulled tight so that it doesn't sag down inside onto the clippings. After about 3 weeks I start to open the top on mine for an hour or two a day to let some fresh breeze in, then close it back up. You will start to notice new growth when they have rooted.

Hey man great video. I haven’t read all the comments but I find the easiest way to fully saturate each cell by bottom watering them with another standard nursery tray and put the cells in the tray then fill the try about 1/4 with water then when it’s all saturated drain excess from the bottom Nursery tray. Hope this helps because peat can be a pain to wet

better to use a sharp knife than a bypass cutting tool such as pruning shears. If you have a very sharp set then maybe it's good. A razor knife will collapse less of the vascular bundles. What I learned back in the 70's and 80's for landscape plant propagation and cut flowers.

@ForestToFarm
@ForestToFarm 5 ай бұрын
Perlite is basically a product used to drain soil. It lets the water drain out. Peat moss once soaked holds moisture and could get a little clumpy. The combination of perlite and peat moss is likely an ideal combination of both water retention and drainage. I am no expert so just my two cents worth. With only perlite there would likely not be ample water available to the plant. Terry

I took some cuttings from Rabbiteyes and they successfully took but after a year in a pot I have one central 'trunk' as it were with quite a few canes branching up from the one central point. There are no other canes coming up from the crown. Should I remove all but three or so of the current canes and cut those back by half? Will this force the bush to push new canes from the roots under the soil and thus widen the crown? The plants are still in felt pots approx 12" round by 12" deep. I’m going to put them in 21 Gal pots this winter. The new pots are 22 in dia by 17 in deep.

Hi Jim. On your alternative method of propagating blueberries. Does the box have a bottom, or is the weed barrier the only bottom? Also, do they need some light? Does light filter under your deck? Would putting it under a tree work? Thank you for your very detailed explanation. I really want to try it. I am trying to grow blueberries, but what I bought from the store is not blooming out. Still just sticks. I am a little frustrated.

Can you give me some advice? A neighbor gave me a lot of raspberry clippings, most are about 2 feet long and all are this years growth, at the beginning of September. I put them in water under the porch (2 hours of afternoon sun) but they are not rooting. This is my first time trying to propagate plants. Should I get some rooting compound? Should I cut them into smaller plants? Should I bring them into the garage where it stays warmer at night? Should I put them into a perlite/ peat moss mix? Should I make some kind of humidity chamber?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 жыл бұрын
It hasn't been that long, but since it is so late I would make changes. Perhaps cutting them in half and doubling the number of cuttings would be advisable. I would want more heat on them at this point, so maybe try and get a little more early and late day sun on them. I think they would be better under plastic, but be careful not to heat it up to much. I don't know how far north you are, but if they had already started to go to sleep that would lower your chances.

+remanosh If they are rooting now, just leave them in place for the winter and transplant in the spring. @wayne251975
@wayne251975 4 жыл бұрын
I have done it with one I made. The problem I found was keeping the top end as responsive as this method. It seems to me that the stem and limited leaves left intact have more to do with growth and regeneration than what goes on in the root zone. As far as keeping the plant tissue alive long enough to get root formation anyway.
