Those are some beautiful carrots! I simply cannot bring myself to thin seedlings because I hate choosing which ones live and which ones die. So, last year, I tried making seed tape for carrots. It worked really well! I picked up some great tips from your video. Did not know carrots did not like too much nitrogen. Might be why mine didn't seem to grow as well as yours. Thanks for all these wonderful videos. I am a new fan!

Oh my gosh I'm the same way, I rarely if ever thin seedlings because it feels so mean! I usually pot up all the extra seedlings (not carrots though) and give them to neighbours so they go to new homes and get to live out their little planty lives in peace. 😊🌱

Thanks for the idea of seed tape. I think that will work well for me to put the work into making the tape rather than putting time into thinning the seedlings later (also I could see myself forgetting).

Question: How do you keep cats from digging out the soil? And how do you prevent slugs from feeding on the stems? Also, how do you prevent flies? Amazing harvest you have there, too.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
By growing in containers, these problems are a a bit easier to control. For slugs, you just need to raise the containers from ground, I usually have them couple of inches clear from the ground. Cats are the easiest for me: I have a dog on duty so no cats in our yard. But I suggest to use some kind of barrier like chicken mesh specially when seedlings are small. Once they are tall enough I don't think cats would like to dig them (not sure though). And my go to for fly and bug is neem oil mix, Spinosad mix is helpful too. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Not sure if I you have a video to answer to my questions in any of your videos, but I'm guessing you have a lot of used potting soil after each harvest. Are you using it again and just adding compost to recharge it or using fresh each time? Thanks- excellent videos.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
I try to reuse my potting soil as much as possible. Once I cleaned the soil from roots, I use the old soil as "peat moss/coir +perlite" mix that I use in my videos, to make my new potting soil. So I add fresh compost (and sometimes fertilizer) to make a new soil. I have done this for years and it always works. I hope this helps and thank you very much for your comment!

Thanks for sharing! Can I use grow bag to plant carrots? and if yes how big should I get? 5 or 7 gallons?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Grow bags are usually 12 in deep so you might want to try short carrot varieties (6 in). The smaller bags are not very wide and you will not get too many carrots, so I recommend at least 7 gallon bags. I hope this helps and thank you very much for your comment!

I like your style. Very nice video. Was wondering if it is necessary to use containers so deep since the carrots only grow to 6 inches or so.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
I mainly chose these containers because they are wide to get more carrots. Generally you want your pot be 2x the length of the carrot since the roots go deeper. So for 6 in carrots a 12" deep pot will be ok. Glad you like my video and thank you very much for your comment!.

I got these at Lowe's, they might stop carrying exact color but you can find similar 18 gallon bins. Usually plastic pots or containers are marked with the plastic categories. Containers are normally marked 2 (HPDE) or 5 (PP) which both are food safe. The ones not safe are number 3 (and some say 6). FYI, 3 is PVC which is used in many gardening piping. Avoid pots marked 3 or 6, all other numbers are ok for organic gardening. Thanks for visiting!

This might be a dumb question but the small baby carrots you pull out- could you replant those and would they grow to full size?

No such a thing as dumb question in gardening😉 Carrots don't prefer to be transplanted, so if you re-plant them most probably they won't survive. But you can use the thinned seedlings in your salad. Hope this helps and thanks for visiting!

how do you know when the carrots are ready to harvest i seen somebody leave their carrots in for 100 days
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 10 ай бұрын
It is very possible for carrots to take 100 days or so to mature. As I show in this video and my other carrot video, you can move the soil around and check the roots to see if they are well formed and about the supposed size of the planted variety. Or simply pull out one or two out and check if they are ready. Hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch!

Could you mention more details as to how often you water them etc?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 ай бұрын
Watering is highly depending on the weather and I am hesitant to mention a general watering guideline. The most important tip is to keep the soil moist but not soggy. So don't overwater and don't let soil dry out. For carrots I usually water every other 2-3 days. If top soil is wet, skip watering. hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Can you give an example of “low nitrogen fertilizer”? I always end up with carrots with heavy leaves but very small body.. I understand that this could be due to high nitrogen content in soil.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
You are correct. Carrots prefer very average soil and rich soil with high nitrogen will result in top growth. If you want to use solid food, one of the best choices is bone meal (my choice). For organic liquid fertilizers, Dr. Earth Root Zone (0-2-2) or Bud & Bloom booster (1-2-1) are great choices. For non-organic liquid fertilizers, you can get Liquinox 0-10-10 Bloom fertilizer. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

I live in the North East USA. Planted my seeds in a 10 gal grow bag 2 weeks ago, nothing happening. No green sprouts. The bag is outside on my balcony, nights are in the 40s, days in 50s-60s. I thought carrots could germinate in low temps? I bought the seeds fresh at big box store. Any idea why they're not germinating? Do they need full days of sun to germinate? Thank you!
@TowardGarden

Depending on the variety you are growing, the germination temperature (ideally 60-80F) and the time will be different. Check the required temp and the days to germinate on the seed packet, but carrots can take weeks to germinate. Thank you for visiting!
