Learn How To Grow Clemson Spineless Okra if you have never tried! Okra is awesome in stews and medleys, fried or canned. We started these seeds (experiment) via seed tray, egg carton and straight to the ground. What happened? Is there a difference?
In the end, it did not matter. BUT if you have a short growing season you can start your okra indoors so that the plants have time to mature and produce outside before the first frost arrives. The okra plants featured in this video all reached at least 11.5 feet tall by the end of the growing season. And the production was great. Okra likes hot weather.
How much okra should you grow for two people? Well in this experiment we grew 16 plants, because we were experimenting with different starting techniques for okra seeds, and 16 plants produce much more than two people need. At least for fresh consumption. They can be stored (canned or frozen) but if you do not want an excess you can get by with 4-6 okra plants for two people.
There are many varieties of okra. We used Clemson Spineless Okra in this experiment. This experiment was conducted in North Carolina zone 7b. The soil is heavy clay based and was amended with cow manure compost and 10-10-10 fertilizer mix. The plants were rarely watered artificially, even through a summer drought.

Them darned flies are so loud this time of the year. I didn't know what was making that sound. When I was a little boy, I asked my Uncle what was making that noise. He said it was the Power lines running along the road. I thought my whole life that is what it was. But, when I became an Uncle many years ago, it became apparent me that it is an Uncles responsibility to mess the little kid's heads up... lol... Today we had our first cobs of corn from our garden. My wife saw a truck sitting on the side of the road selling local corn, came home and picked some and it was good to go... Pretty early for our zone. That okra looks awesome. Your whole garden is so neat and tidy. Good job. We are over run with squash, butter nut, I think, I can't remember one year to the next, we just reuse the seeds, every year. Probably some kind of hybrid by now... lol... There is a little trick the local farm stands use. The corn in Quebec is ready two weeks before here. They pack it up and bring it down here and sell it in bulk to the farm stands and markets. They advertise it as local corn and charge a premium because it is "early this year". People know I think, but it is fresh corn and it is still a reasonable price. In Canadian rules, "Local" is from producer to store in less than 24 hours. By today's standard, Oranges from Florida 1700 miles away is local, if they can get it here in 24 hours. But, not even the grocery store will try to slip that one through. I am rambling, The video ended and I am still talking... Listen, Bud, it is great to see you. I appreciate your help and hope all is well. Take care...

Hmm, guessing that squash is hybrid for sure! We had a "Frankenstein" squash 10 year ago We tossed it. Stupid to do. It was like an acorn squash meets a a spaghetti squash. We messed up not saving the seed after that. Lord. Local. What does that mean anymore? The system is messed up down here too. Organic means "sort of" and made in America means " well we put it all together here. What? Where did the part come from? Florida ships out the good stuff (for the shelve) and uses the rest (the crap) to make orange juice for all of the orange juice "drinks" out the crap. Be well Ken! Love ya buddy!

Mine is just starting to set pods. They’re loving our heat this summer. It’s definitely an under appreciated veggie here in the ‘north’ and I’d like to see more folks grow this one. Such an easy veggie to grow! Thanks for sharing and let us know what you’re doing with all that okra!

Thanks Dani! Hey, plenty of fruit on the neck pumpkin! :) Will send you some seed back! That would be neat! Our Okra has been spitting them out a handful a day, but soon, very soon....:) And don't top that crepe myrtle! Best shade tree for your yard ever! That tree in this video, well let's see, at least 27 years old. maybe 35 or so. Not sure. It was here when we got the place and not nearly as tall back then. Needs a bottom pruning for sure. lol. Be safe out there! 😜👍

I think it is all in the timing there Johnny. They love the heat. Maybe start some seedlings inside. Get a head start on the growth then put them out when the heat strikes? Should only take 4-6 weeks of heat (from transplants) to get a crop.

We have a lot of okra! My partner says they are easy to grow and need little maintenance! They grow quick and you will have an abundance of harvest. We harvested so much that we sell a lot to locals! And it just keeps growing. Now some plants are taller than me! We do have a red bug eating at the leaves but we dont worry because we have a lot of plants!

ha ha ha ha. My brother is a champ at finding scrap anything. It is amazing what people will give away just to get it off their property. He scored some hardly used siding once like that. The owner put it up, didn't like it, and took it down. My brother paid nothing. The guy just wanted it gone. lol.
