Delphiniums are a summer flowering plant that can be grown from seed and the best time to sow the seed is in late winter, sow the Delphinium seeds early indoors and transplant them outside after the danger of frost is over and the weather warms up.
In this video we show you the process from how to sow the seeds, how to transplant them and the final results of flowering plants.
Flower colour varies from the classic blue with white centre to purples also with white centres.
Delphiniums do look like like Larkspur, however they are different species. Delphiniums are usually perennials, Larkspur are annuals. Larkspur also have finer foliage.

• Keep seeds chilled until planting.
• Protect seedlings from snails or slugs

Excellent! I’ve been growing delphinium for many years in an attempt to stiffen the stems as to keep them strong and upright when flowering. Your video is absolutely perfect and clear to follow

I also reuse plastic food containers for starting seeds, but never thought to cut the clear plastic ones down to fit as mini-greenhousees. What a great idea. I'm new to growing delphiniums from seed, or at all, because I live in the hot South, but they are so beautiful I wanted to try to grow them. My seedlings all came up and I've transplanted them to larger pots and looking forward to growing them into mature, flowering plants. Fingers crossed!

The paper cover is a brilliant idea! I must try that on other seeds, here the hot dry air dries the top of the soil very quickly, and as the seeds are in the top 1/8" which is where it dried faster, that kills them off in hours. Stay safe! Chris B.

Thanks Chris, the paper really works, keeps the seeds moist and dark, and Delphiniums do need both for the seeds to germinate properly.

If the seeds are good quality you should have no real problems. Ours flowered well the second year and with a little care and fertiliser you can keep them going.

Questions: I was told to pre-chill the seed packet in the refrigerator for a week first. How do you feel about that one? The second idea was, "plant in the autumn in an unheated greenhouse when temps are fluctuating between 3 04 4 degrees C at night and 12 or 13 degrees in the day. You need that big fluctuating temp to get them to grow". How do you feel about that one?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 жыл бұрын
We store our seeds in the refrigerator so yes, pre chill. Actual germination is best at between 18 and 24C. We sow ours in late winter in mini hot houses, such as in the video. After they germinate they will take colder temps. So you could start the seeds in autumn, with warmth for germination, and then grow them on, over winter in the greenhouse.

When do you remove the humidity dome? When they are tall enough and reach the cover or after most have sprouted? Thanks!
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 ай бұрын
See 3:48 The seedlings need to have small leaves. Usually we remove the dome when we are ready to pot them up. IF they are growing (no set backs in temperature) we will sometimes remove the dome and let them grow on to twice this size. Let us know how it goes. The plants that we propagated in this video (2022) are still going strong... almost ready to divide the clump.

I just collected seeds from my delphinium. Some of the seeds are still white and haven't dried out yet. Should I separate them to dry out? Also, is it ok if I refrigerate some of them or the dried ones for a week, and replant them this month and just keep them as an indoor plant till next spring? Thanks!

What type of dirt should i use for germination i have coco peat, simple garden soil and some leaf compost?🤔
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 5 ай бұрын
Without seeing the soil and leaf compost we are guessing a little ....... You need a disease free soil for germination without the seeds 'damping off'. So with what you have available coco peat and leaf compost - if its really fine. You could also pour boiling water over the garden soil to sterilise it if you want. A mix of the 3 sterilised with boiling water could be a good option. OR try a few different mixes if you have lots of seeds. We will try to do a seperate video on 'damping off' and seed germination soon.. Let us know how it goes.

If you want to put more than one seedling into a larger container, how many seedlings per pot would you recommend? My larger pots are the 5 gallon variety. thanks in advance!
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 2 жыл бұрын
Usually they are planted 12 inches apart so that would mean 1 - 2. HOWEVER in a 5 gall container we would grow 3- 4 and fertilise them more. 3 - 4 plants would give a really good display. 1 plant would look lonely but with the foliage maybe OK.. (assuming that the diameter is around 10 inches.)

@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 6 ай бұрын
Yes, a lot of confusion with these, we will put it this way, Larkspurs are the wild species both annuals and perennials. Delphiniums are hybrids of the perennial types. So over the years they have changed a lot from the original species. One of the best growers is Dowdeswell Delphiniums in New Zealand, they have some amazing plants. Different growers/hybridisers, produce slightly different looking plants.
