I had never really heard of this plant before seeing it in your videos. This looks like a great alternative to Barberry that lose their leaves in the winter and look bad until spring here in zone 9A on the Washington coast. Thanks for the great information about these and other plants.

A well-done video! Informative and to the point. Here in Crestview, FL I've found success transplanting the occasional shoots off of established loropetalum. Growth is easily 12" a year.

Hi Jim, love your informative videos. I planted 30 Ever Red Loropetalums late July here in Atlanta Georgia. I installed an irrigation drip hose with two 1 gal. emitters for each shrub. Initially, i was watering them about 2 gallons of water every other day. Hot as hell july and august, 90s and very little to no rain. They were doing great, but last two weeks I've noticed quite a bit of bright red leaves on all of them. The weather cooled off a bit last two weeks so I dialed back a little on the water as well. The red leaves break off easy if you touch them. My question...is this normal with the cooler weather...it was in the 70s for one week...or are they not getting enough water???

Hi Jim, I found your video quite helpful as I am not very plant savvy. I really want to plant the Dark Red Loropetalum as a screen to hide an ugly lot next door to us in the St. Simons, GA area. The area we need to plant is moist soil, will they grow in wet soil or not?

I recently planted this bush and so far, all the leaves are a deep burgundy. Can I expect that down the road there will be both green and burgundy leaves? I would love that!

How far apart should I plant these? Do you have a video on pruning/cutting back for newbies? Do I plant the root ball below soil or above?

You mentioned it does best in full sun. I was planning to put it in an area that gets a good half day of sun but that's all. Is this a mistake? Will it still do well enough or will I be ruining this shrubs beauty potential sticking it there?

I have a question. Love your channel. Are the red diamond midsize by southern living the same as the ever red? I bought a small container of the SL mid red diamond and then saw a large 4 foot ever red with no brand name that was absolutely gorgeous but 150. and they did not have small ones. I decided to google and it says ever red is the former name of red diamond. I am not convinced the two look the same, but I am new at plants. Maybe age of the plant matters and I only have a photo of the large one to compare mine too. Decided recently to put in drought tolerant shrubs versus keep sodding in Florida. I noticed you said in another video the red diamond had purple foliage. The info does say deep burgundy, but I think it looks more purple. Pictures on the internet haven’t helped much. I am so confused. Thanks!

Jim, mine are growing in height well. But they just are thin. Not really losing leaves but not growing anymore. How can I get it to grow more leaves?

Hi Jim, I’m in zone 8b, and have some loropetalum that’s are on the East foundation of my house. They were planted in 2003, have reached 6’, and are obstructing two windows. How far down can I cut these back? A nursery worker told me I can get aggressive with the cut, and they would look ugly, but come back just fine. Some of the main trunks are 6-8” in diameter.

They are correct. You could go after it very hard. The sooner the better, because you want this year's growth to harden off for winter.

So, if I cut them down to 3', and take out the larger branches, should I give any thought to the leaves that are on the current bush? What should I leave so I can get it back to some semblance of a shrub and not just a stick(s) in the ground with no foliage? I cut my knockout roses to just above the ground like my mums, and they're growing like crazy. Can I get that aggressive? BTW, I do love your channel. I've gained a lot of knowledge from it.

The ones I planted at the same time 2 years ago in the back of my house look awesome . I need to know if the ones in the front are dead as it's ruining my curb appeal HELP 😥

My Loropetalum has taken over my beds in front of my house. If I prune them, I only trim the foliage. I really need to cut them way back. Will the foliage come back if I do this? If so, what is the best time to cut them back?

It kinda doesn't matter how you prune one of these larger growing Loropetalum. You could cut it in half anytime between April and the end of July with no problem. Just not in fall or winter

Hi Jim, does Loropetalum set seeds at all ? Some grow nearby my property and I would like to grow more of it. Have not seen seeds once those frilly " thongs" die off. Or can we propagate from cuttings or graft. It's quite expensive in garden centres I note.

Hi Jim, I'm looking to container grow/pre-bonsai two Ever Reds. Would an Azalea type soil/fertilizer be ideal for this plant, or something more aligned to boxwood evergreen? Thanks for any info.
