Propagating hibiscus, whether tropical hibiscus or hardy hibiscus, can be done in the home garden and both varieties of hibiscus are propagated in the same way. Hardy hibiscus is easier to propagate than the tropical hibiscus, but never fear; with a little bit of knowledge about how to propagate hibiscus, you can be successful at growing either kind.
Daizz's tips:-
The hibiscus cutting should be 4 to 6 inches long. Remove everything but the top set of leaves. Trim the bottom of the hibiscus cutting to be cut just below the bottom leaf node (bump where the leaf was growing). Dip the bottom of the hibiscus cutting in rooting hormone. The next step for propagating hibiscus from cuttings is to place the hibiscus cutting in well draining soil. Make sure the rooting soil is thoroughly wet, then stick a finger into the rooting soil. Place the hibiscus cutting into the hole and back fill it around the hibiscus cutting.Place the hibiscus cutting in partial shade. Make sure the rooting soil stays damp (not wet) until the hibiscus cuttings are rooted. The cuttings should be rooted in about 4-6 weeks. Once they are rooted, you can re pot them in a bigger pot.

I've tried this before and I know it works :). Here in the north of New Zealand we have just experienced our driest summer ever, and one of the few plants that did well and continued flowering were hibiscuses. So I'm going to propagate a lot more, using your technique. Thanks for your video!

Thank you for some great information. I planted tropical Orange Hibiscus last year and they are 7 feet tall and in need of pruning. I will be propagating the cuttings and sharing them with family & neighbors. I have enjoyed many of your instructional videos about bamboo and have 12 new bamboo plants as a result. Keep the great videos coming.

I grew up in South Florida and now live in CT. My experience in FL gave me an understanding of how easy it is to propagate Tropical Hibiscus from cuttings and a number of other plants as well. Then my hibiscus got blown over in a spring storm and a branch broke off. So I did what dad did - got a pot, filled it with potting soil, clipped some of the length off the broken end of the branch (leaving leaves of course) and stuck it into the soil, watered it, and covered it all with a gallon wide mouthed jar. I put this little greenhouse in the sun, and walked away for about a 6 weeks. Well, now its 4 years later and mom and child are still blooming well, and the child needs its first haircut. nb: You can do this anytime of the year but not outdoors if its autumn or winter (grow lights work well), cuttings should be taken in early spring before buds form for the tropical variety, and don't pull the jar off the plant to check if its got enough water. It recycles.

Excellent video. Clear instructions, great demonstration of all the steps & stages. I am going to try this now on my Hibiscus sabdariffa (thai red roselle) that I grew for tea this year, but know it will not make it through the winter here in NC. I'll see if I can keep some plants alive inside by a sunny window. If they don't look happy, I do have some grow lights I can keep them under until ready to be replanted back out next Spring.

After rooting hormone is applied and inserted into potting mix, I like to water it from the bottom-up.... meaning, fill a saucer with water and place the pot in the shallow water so that the soil soaks up the water. This way, you will not wash off the hormone powder, if you water from the top.

Thank you. Do you know of a method for rooting morning glory? I want the weed, not the polite hybrid. A nursery owner told me I needed to start with seeds. I did and they were all hybrid. I need the plant I used to have that will survive me and any weather conditions to make a large field of groundcover over rocks. They thrived under 40 ft pines before. Also, I have a few aerogardens. My first and only try failed when larva was found on the 8-week old herbs and salads. I also read that summer isn't the best time for hydroponics? I didn't have A/C and "someone" kept letting in the mosquito-eaters. I don't know if they caused my plant problem but they loved the three units in the kitchen. I did buy safer soap and it killed all but one herb. Are there any fast-growing trees that can be rooted? I'm in North San Diego County and trying to replace plants lost during the fires. Oh, what about ficus benjamina? It's an outdoors guy in a big pot. Thank you. I intend to learn how to grow things successfully.
