We will look at how to grow Japanese Maples from seed. We will look at how to get the best method for growing Japanese Maple seed. I have found this method to give me the highest germination rate. We will go over seed collection, chilling requirement, growing media, watering, and how to care for seeds that are germinating.

Dan, Great question. I use 100% pine bark. I then place them under a 50% shade cloth once the seeds germinate. I usually leave them there for the first growing season then plant in an appropriate spot.

Thank you for the prompt answer 🙂 As far as the stratification goes, adding the Water Peroxide mix should work to spray the paper towel for the seeds going into the fridge, no?….

I really enjoyed your video, thanks for making it. I like plant propagation and especially Japanese Maples. I liked everything you were saying until you said you'd be throwing most of the seedlings away and I immediately wished I was your neighbor to offer to take all the seedlings you would cast off. I like your Hydrogen Peroxide method and plan to use it in future. Thanks again :)

I gave a lot of those seedlings away because they didn't have characteristics that I thought I could use to create a new cultivar. Let me poke around in the backyard nursery. I picked fresh seeds off my green japanese maple tree today in the SF Bay Area. I'd like to know if I could just stick them in the ground to get them to germinate. Or do I put them in the refrigerator to cool for 5 weeks and then plant them this year Or, do I have to wait till next year to plant them? Thank you for your answer
@Dr.Warren

It's best to chill them first to simulate winter. You will get better germination rates doing it this way.

You said you will pick the best one(s) to keep after a few months growth. Do you then graft this seedling onto a generic acer palmatum rootstock or is that not necessary? I've heard cultivars are grafted for 2 reasons: 1, to maintain the cultivar traits (it's a clone), and 2, to provide the cultivar a stronger root system because the roots of a cultivar are more likely less vigorous. I understand the cloning aspect, but do cultivars always in general have inferior root systems? If you are growing a seedling from cultivar parents, does the seedling need to be grafted or can it grow just as well on its own root system?
@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren Жыл бұрын
You are correct about the reasons we graft. If I have a seedling that I think is worthy as trying to introduce as a new cultivar I would graft it.

If you pick the seeds here in alabama in middle of October they are red still. Is it ok to pick them and then let them turn brown and then germinate them? Im seeing anothrr video where 2 or 3 guys are just pulling lots of them off a tree with red leaves and shrinking them in a bed of dirt. Then they cover it with 2 inches of soil.

I bought Japanese maple seeds on line with no instructions. I live in Alabama also and not sure what to do with them; it is July. Should I keep them in the little plastic bags they came in until winter and than put in the refrigerator, or can I go ahead a put them in the refrigerator and then take them out in spring? Help.

Go ahead and stick them in the fridge. You can start them indoors Jan -feb and put them outside in April.

Is it okay to put the seeds into the substrate and cells, and place the tray in the refrigerator for the cold period? Then remove seeds to germinate.

I like the idea. I'm not 100% it would work but don't see why it wouldn't as long as you sterilize your substrate with something like peroxide.

All the things I have read and watched on KZfaq says that your supposed to put the seeds in a bag along with moist dirt or peat moss for a period of time. I have done that, and it just turned out a mushy mess. So, you can just put them in a dry paper towel and put in the frig? I like that a lot better.
@Dr.Warren

That's what I do and it works. Sometimes I might squirt a dab of copper sulfate on the paper towel to help keep fungus from popping up on them.

There is a sweet spot with maximum germination percentage and Temp. The data suggests around 40* is ideal. +/- that and germination rates decrease.
