Thanks for the video. I tried growing several Japanese Maple trees from seed this spring after keeping them in the fridge for several months with soil. I have several of them growing in pots. One problem that I had was that I put one of them outdoors and it was messed up by some animal or bird. I have a few other plants that are growing in a mudroom next to a window, but I'm afraid to put them outdoors until they get much larger.

Our 30+ year old Japanese Maple produced so much seed this year, I'm in zone 6a. I just filled one of those gallon bags with fresh seed, if it wasn't for the on and off droughts this year I probably would have gotten 2 filled or more, since there are thousands left that are dry.

Pretty cool guys! I had no idea about the 2 year stratification deal for some. I probably have over a thousand seedlings and trees up to 9 years old. My intent has been Bonsai but I think some would make very nice garden trees. Older trees are from a mother Filagree Maple. Other polinators might be Norway Maple and Acer Macrophyllum (I'm a Pacific Northwest guy). There is tremendous variability in vigor. About 10% or less have Filagree tendencies. I'll have to look at more of your videos and learn more things.

@@nathandane1572 I've done the same (Buffalo, NY zone 6B) and I currently have 50 seedlings in a large tray of peet, perlite, and garden soil mixed. They've been in the tray for about 3 weeks and the majority have their first set of true leaves. Some say not to take them from the ground until they have their first set of true leaves (to allow better roots to develop) but I haven't had any problem. I keep a wire mesh over the top to keep birds and squirrels out, and I keep them in a shaded area outside that doesn't get harsh wind. (I'm near lake Erie). I watered them in really well, and now just water them when I see the soil on top has dried out. Some people leave them in the same tray all summer, and some will tell you to pot them in 4 inch pots when their second sets of leaves start showing. I do pot them up in their own pots, but it's a lot less convenient when you want to move them. I allow them to be in the sun in morning and late afternoon for maybe an hour or so a day.

I would like to germinate Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) seeds next year because I ❤️ Norway Maple trees, they look very pretty. I will do this experiment that is stratification and without stratification. I will check which method is the best for germinating Norway Maple seeds. These seeds do not require scarification because the seeds are not hard, it is very soft. This year, I will collect Norway Maple seeds in fall season and then when I go home, I will store them in the fridge before germination. I would like to keep the seeds cool and dry once I store them in the fridge before germination.

I've been getting more into cloning and grafting, and always wondered why Japanese maples were done that way? I totally get keeping that exact genetic from the mother plant but why don't people start f2 seeds more?? Who cares if it's not exactly what you expect. They're all beautiful in there own right. Any way y'all do a great job explaining all this stuff in great detail. Helps tree nerds like myself learn as much as we can. Thanks 🙏

Hi Tim, Hi Matt... Here in zone 6B, we collect seeds on Halloween, October 31st. It's an easy date to remember. I've been successful with growing from seed, and growing from seedlings found under my mature JM's. From spring until Oct/Nov, they grow beautifully... sturdy stems, healthy, supple leaves, and typically 4 sets of true leaves. No applause, please, this doesn't end well, haha! I've been growing JM's from seeds and seedlings for 4 years straight now, and I have never, EVER, had a single JM survive through winter. I've probably lost more than 200 healthy little trees, yet I'm still at it! I have 50 seedlings growing right now, new this spring, and my plan is to ask my local garden center to rent me 2 sq ft to over winter them. $200 bucks if my seedlings are alive in spring! If that doesn't work out, I may need to make a road trip from Buffalo, NY to North Carolina to drop them on the porch of the Nichols brothers! I'll be back in spring to pick them up, haha! Any helpful hints for overwintering would be so appreciated! I feel like I've tried everything! Thanks for all you do! I just purchased two trees from you in the last couple of weeks, and they are spectacular! I couldn't be happier! Thank you again!

Hey thanks. Winter can be tricky on new seedling for sure especially in your area without a greenhouse. Maples need some protection in zone 5 but sheds and basements can be tricky for young tender plants. I would make sure to protect if left outside.

Guys I've asked this before in a different way but why would my 2 butterfly acer palmatum be 100% frost and freeze proof in the spring? All the others damage or die but these 2 have never once frost bit in the 10 plus years ive had them and I'm not exaggerating!! I'd say they would have made it thru the Easter of 07 apocalypse. Unless you plan to sell them, you can pretty much base your choices on what looks interesting to you. A really pretty leaf shape, or maybe a color you don't already have. Changes may still occur, but by about the 4th set of true leaves, I have a good idea of which look the most interesting (and of course healthy) to me. Not trying to answer for the pro's, just sharing an idea.

@@MrMapleShow Thanks for answer me. I'm new on the japanese maple (JM) world. As a genetic plant breeder student I understand the concept of variability, but I didn't expected that JM had so much genetic variability. I'm from Brazil and I managed to get some JM seeds from Austria, seeds from 4 different kind. Sango Kaku, BloodGood, Osakazuki and FernLeaf Maple. I was surprised when the seeds from the Sango Kaku variety start to germinate inside the refrigerator. The seeds from other varieties don't germinate in the refrigerator, so I move them to a colder place (35°F-41°F), let them there for 3 months and 10 days. One seed from the Osakazuki variety started to germinate in that condition, after that I toke all the seeds out of the cold, I hope they start to germinate. The seeds look healthy, but I afraid that 3 months are not enough.

A commercial grower friend would just add another heavy layer of seed each year to the same bed, hoping some more would sprout the second or third year. Other species trees would usually have the whole seed bed dug at once.

I sprout Tridents the same way. Experimented a couple years ago with dry seeds soaked overnight. About half sunk. 20 floating seeds sprouted one. 20 sinking seeds sprouted about 16. Soaking in warm water was not better than cold water. Dry seeds left outside in winter sprouted about 10, since about half would have been 'floaters".
