Great video Jan ! Don't get frustrated or lose your motivation. People don't always pay attention or get the message. We appreciate that you're actually teaching us that there are no tricks, just lots of time, experience, dedication, constant monitoring and love of plants. And that's the secret. 🙂

Honestly it has been the most encouraging and motivating thing to me to try my hand at indoor plants to hear that a lot of it is just time and learning from mistakes. You give such incredible clear instructions and tips. As well as just hearing your mindset on it’s just a plant and leaves come and go because it makes me feel like it’s very low pressure.

Hi Jan, I just wanted to tell you about my plants. I to am a Monstera, Philodendron person with a mix of just plants I like, on the side. After seeing all your videos, I took the big step into moss poles like yours. The water bottles work great and after just a few months I have a number of aerial roots poking into the wet moss. Needless to say I'm thrilled and am awaiting big leaves! We live in Cleveland, Ohio, winter here so it is difficult to keep the humidity up but we're working with it. Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos and information. I look forward to seeing new ones!

Hi Sydney! I am Gladys, I live in Puerto Rico, a beautiful island in the Caribbean. I am so grateful I found you; you explain things so wonderful. You explain things in a way that I feel I can make it. I watched other videos from, of course, other people, but the feeling is different. With you I feel that, this time, I will be able to make it. As you said in this video, I used to purchase big plants, and they had not made it. Thankfully, I gave them to the employees that cleans the condominium where I live. Just wanted you to know that you do a marvelous job explaining how to do things and a marvelous job having your channel. Thank you, thank you, thank you! God blesses you!

Admittedly I clicked this video thinking you'd share what fertilizer you use 😭 but I love your advice because it's so true, there is no formula to plant care. They are living things which means they each have unique needs and this is what makes caring for plants exciting. If someone gave us a magic formula, we wouldn't take the time to get to know our plants and build a relationship with them. Thank you for your thoughtful content, new subscriber here 💚 PS - you've inspired me to get into more climbing plants 😊

I found that with this latest video, you are more real than I even thought. And don't worry, that question is the furthest from my mind. I have found that the ONE secret is really just being attentive to your plants. If you pay attention, clean them regularly, and give them the conditions they require,...each plant is different. Allowing them to be fooled into thinking they are in their native environment is always #1! I value your videos bud! Sooo happy I subscribed and for all the tips! I will say that if you ever decide to sell a cutting or two from those mature beauties, I would LOVE to buy it. Good job on this video my friend!

Great video! I used to live in Sydney but returned to Tasmania. I don't think many people realise how benign the conditions are in coastal NSW (bar fire and flooding). I'm happy just to see my plants slowly settle in and grow with leaves achieving their mature form and looking healthy. Size isn't my goal (although I love your leviathans) because it is just too cool down here, so I really try to focus on style and magical combinations. I'd love to see the small plants you speak about and hear about your plans for them.

Excellent video. So well put. I look back just a couple years and how far I have come! I learned by trial and error. I reaserch my plant, find out what it likes and do my best to provide. If people want plants as big as you then they will have to act accordingly. I personally don't have the room! I live vicariously thru you! LOL but I do my best to give what I can to each plant. I have cabinets, grow lights, humidifiers, and heat mats. I let some climb, some don't. I factor in astetics too. I also think we need to remember at what stage you are buying your plant. Is it a seedlimg? Full grown? So anyway, We are our best teachers. Well equal parts maybe of plant videos and just going for it! I certainly love watching your videos and asking for help when I need it. xoxo Thanks for everything btw my Queen has recovered! it WAS water!! so simple.

i Think people just get confused when they do the same things and dont get results. That you live in the perfect climate for these beautifull plants, makes allot of difference, and people should not forget that enviroment plays a huge factor. Getting care exactly right is sometimes difficult and plants do love consistency. You obviously care allot for these plants with allot of love and dedication, you should be very proud!

Ok darlin first off obviously your amazing I absolutely love your videos and I’m super excited to make some of your moss poles by far the best and easiest I’ve seen. I think I watched all your videos today.. 2 questions.. I’m kinda curious that because like myself I believe you love the plants with character and was wondering why you don’t have any Calatheas or prayer plants? They have such depth and gorgeous designs and move so beautifully during the day and night and secondly have you ever tried Leca? I’m asking this because I also Love my Manijula Pothos but for whatever those evil lil aphids would devour their roots.. I hate that bug! Anyway cut them, propagated them in water and like I did with most my plants switched them to leca… Less bugs 🎉! In doing so I found that it obviously raises the humidity and changed the leaf texture they seem to grow much healthier and thicker so I think I’m going to try your moss pole with a thick string or 2 down the middle of the pole and use Leca.. wondering if you have ever tried this before and if it would still be possible to grow those large beautiful leaves? Thankyou for your videos they really are great! 😊

I have a question. I got this beautiful Alocasia Regal Shields 3 days ago. It came in a small pot with substrate that’s very fluffy, I think it’s sphagnum moss. I already ordered everything I need to make a chunky aroid mix like yours and I will repot the plant as soon as it arrives. I’ve noticed that at night water droplets form on the leaf tips which will then drop to the floor. I’ve seen this before on a monstera I once had. From what I’ve read, this means that plant is saturated with water and gets rid of the excess at night when it can’t get rid off it via evaporation. It’s been doing this every night. I’ve checked the substrate yesterday and it felt dry, at least the first 5 centimeters did and it’s a fairly small pot for the size of the plant. The plant is 115 centimeters tall and the pot is 15 centimeters in diameter and 20 centimeters tall. The question is, should I water the plant despite the guttation or should I wait until it doesn’t guttate anymore and then water it?

For me the confusion "secret" is about nutrients as we learned that plants make their own food via photosynthesis - so I didn't know how much and how often to "feed" the plants. Which actually addresses the other obstacle I've had, how to effectively allow climbers to climb? Until your advisement on nutrientting the moss pole, I just gave up by installing trees in my yard and throwing my epiphytes under them to climb naturally. I'm fortunate to live in the Los Angeles basin, which is 65-70% humidity and consistently sunny all year long to grow houseplants outdoors. So thank you so much for sharing your "secrets" so as to allow me to enjoy large plants IN my home as well.

It's obvious to me Jan. You are shrinking. Your plants are staying the same. Happy New Year buddy.

I get it… With just the few changes I have picked up from you I see the improvement in growth with my plants. A lot is trial and error because what may work for you may not work for me. It’s good to have a guide but you have to pay attention to your plants, your environment and the care you’re providing.

Agreed! Which is why, Jan I never ask any grower, "What's your secret?" As a Monstera nut I always tell people this: "They are not called MONSTER-a for no reason. Like the monsters of mythical lore and those that grip us from within, they take *time* to get larger than life. To tame the monster that be is to tame the monster from within: *Impatience* "
