How To Grow Marine Macro Algae | Planted Saltwater Aquarium
In this video I explain how to grow marine macro algae to create a saltwater planted aquarium. Macro algae has many benefits within the marine habitat, from providing food and shelter for fish to soaking up excess nutrients; but it can be challenging to grow and maintain.

This is the second time around I've watched this. Il admit the first time around it didn't really grab me. This time round though I truly appreciate how unique this video is. Your tank is stunning! It's really difficult to find display tanks that are far more natural with the use of macros. Spot on with the information as well.

Cardinals remind me of rams, I am thinking of doing tanks side by side one reef and one planted. But now I'm considering macro algae instead.

Nice video!!!! BTW, I was recently researching why algae are considered "protists" not "plants." With the greatest possible respect sir, I believe it is "1 kind of cell" (only 1 tissue), not only 1 cell. Part of the definition of being a plant is that plants have to have specialized tissues. For example, even mosses that do not have true roots, nor vascular tissue, do have one k ind of tissue for their rhizomes (which only anchor the moss, nutrients are passively absorbed from the soil whereas true roots with xylem would actively set ground water and minerals up the stem of a vascular plant) & mosses have another kind of tissue for the green part & when they make little spore forming structures, that is another kind of tissue. But algae, both the green film algae & the macro algae only have 1 k ind of tissue that; even if it takes different shapes in different parts of the macro algae, it is still all 1 tissue with the same cell type repeated over and over. Please understand, I"m not trying to be disrespectful all, just passing on the information I researched to figure out why everyone calls giant Kelp protists., not plants.

wcdeich4 this is so clarifying bc I was always skeptical when ppl say macroalgae is one cell. So it’s one kind of cell capable of doing a few different things. Great. ...almost like stem cells..

I am new to this hobby. However, i remodel homes and pools salt/chlorine and oceanography educated back in highschool for all 4 yrs. I enjoy critical thinking to find and search for an easier way. At times it can be curiosity, such as this one. So here is an idea. Why not place the plants in the sump and place a light above it. This way the a refugium is created along with kelp for nitrates elimination the way you have a cleaner aquarium for fish and coral? Am I on to something here 🤔?

Hello, maybe you can help me out mate, I just can keep macroalgae alive. after a few days it just turns pale and liquifies.... no damage done but the algae just vanish. water parameters: pH:8.2 mg:1150-1200 Ca:440-460 Kh:8 0.024 sg no3: 5 mg/l po4: 0.3 mg/3 temperature is the same that you'd expect in a reef tank... and I've got no fish that could be munching on it.... I've tried dosing planted tank trace elements and iron... giving it iron tablets by the roots.... nothing works... it just melts away. :(
