Is Caulerpa Macroalgae DANGEROUS In A REEF TANK?
In this video we take a closer look at Caulerpa macroalgae and discuss whether it is a dangerous as people claim it to be. I have kept many species of caulerpa in my marine tanks and they do occasionally melt or "go sexual". However this process normally doesn't cause many issues in an aquarium and also is very easy to spot because the algae will go translucent before it does.
Macroalgae has many benefits to a reef tank and these will outweigh the negatives. Caulerpa is one of the easiest to obtain and also the fastest to grow, as such it removes nitrates and phosphates faster than anything else.

I've only ever used grape caluarpa. Never had an issue with it. I have see some of it go white sometimes. Now I know what's going on . Thanks.

Do you plant ulva in substrate or just let it float around in the tank till it finds a way to self seed?

I am a huge fan of caulerpa prolifera. Bought some, waiting for shipping, put it in my tank, next morning it was gone. So bummed as you can imagine. I know your video is a couple years old, but was wondering if you might know if any of my fish would eat this stuff or if I could try again. It was not in my filter or anywhere I could find in my 40 gallon tank so I'm assuming it was eaten??? I have a low stock including: 2 clowns, watchman goby, tail spot blenny, fire fish, 2 PJ cardinals, 2 bengai cardinals, and 2 cleaner shrimp. I would really like to try again, but if the fish are going to eat this, it is a pretty expensive snack.

So once it goes sexual is that part of the plant dead? Do you remove it? Or do you just leave it and it recovers.

Remove it as it will melt and cloud up your tank, its dead

My feather Caulerpa has reproduced by going “sexual” in my 120. I have small little sprouts in a lot of base rock that was put in as dead rock.

I despise grape caulerpa.. got into my display and is very hard to get rid of.. it roots itself into small crevices of rock, grows under the sand and holds a TON of detritus. Was strangling corals and anemones. If you want it in your display then your good but keep an eye on it.
