This was very helpful to me. I stuck my dwarf tomatoes in right along side of my garden tomatoes and they died shortly after setting fruit. I thought it could have been because they were weren't getting sun because of the garden tomatoes taking over the area... but looking back now, I'm sure they were diseased. I never would have thought that certain tomatoes were 'designed' for indoor growth!

I am in zone 8b and am only going to grow dwarf tomatoes this spring. Growing 6 different dwarf varieties but no micros. I started my seedlings Jan 22nd, they germinated 5 days later and are now 3 weeks old since germinating, doing well. I will be transplanting into outdoor grow bags mid-March. Our last frost date is typically Mar 3rd but will give it another week or 2 before transplanting outside. Might give micros a try during the winter months. I learned a lot about the Micro Dwarf Tomatoes from this video. A HUGE thumbs up! May I send you a few photos of what I did to grow my regular tomatoes in the greenhouse you are using in this video? I started doing it last year, but I have seen two other videos where gardeners are trying a similar technique this year. I was really successful and will do the same early next spring. I did it the same way with my peppers and eggplants this year. I actually didn't think it would work with peppers and eggplant. It surprised me. I ended up with some nice plants. Enjoyed, take care!

Great video Jenna! Two years ago I grew Red Robin dwarf tomatoes over winter using the Kratky method with net pots, clay pellets and quart canning jars under grow lights. They did amazingly well and had great flavor. The odd thing was, I tried growing some outdoors the next summer and they were very bland. Thanks for reminding me about these and that it’s time to start them off for the winter season!

Real micro-dwarf tomatoes should only get 12-18 inches high and they're determinate. If you grew one that was 10ft high, it's likely an indeterminate variety. Dwarf tomatoes are considered determinate and should only get 4-5 ft high. Maybe try Dwarf Tomato Project to find a different variety.

Great lesson 👏🏾👍🏾 I've grown dwarfs from Renaissance Farms that did really well: Aztek (a sweet bright yellow cherry), Minibel (a bright red cherry with a sweet-tart flavor) and Little Red Riding Hood (a decent red cherry that grew way taller than I had expected...I had to up pot those and ended up taking them outside as they were simply too big to keep indoors!) Hi Jenna, I got my Tiara cabbage seed from Johnny's that you recommended. I am going to get them started for my fall garden. I'm in eastern North Carolina and usually don't get a hard frost until the middle to end of November. But this concept of Micro Dwarf Tomatoes is quite intriguing. I wonder if I will need supplemental lighting in my small greenhouse as I get into the months of November and December. Do the micro tomatoes continue to set fruit like an indeterminate or do they act like determinate tomatoes? Thanks for posting your ideas. I like the thought that someone is more obsessed with gardening than I am.

Glee sounds like the good stuff. Been watering a LOT this summer. Good points on fertilization, Jenna. Question: How long do you think peat moss is viable in a container? So, our nurser had a product line this year called "kitchen minis" which seemed cute but not bountiful. Ever heard of it? I missed it if you said so, but I just looked up microdwarf tomatoes and read most are indeterminate. Is that right? Oh, sorry for so many questions, but have you ever found hornworms in your greenhouse?
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The Siam & Red Velvet I'm growing are from the Kitchen Minis series. I've grown all the tomatoes & peppers from it-- my favorite is 'Cocoa' tomato. For the size of the plants (which is only about 6-8" tall at most) they produced suprisingly well for me. The peppers were even more abundant. Peat moss- I'm not sure, it does tend to become hydrophobic after it sits dry for a while... but I couldn't give you an exact time frame. Most micro-dwarfs are determinate or semi-determinate... you'll get one flush of fruit and done. The kitchen minis specifically are determinate. I've not had hornworms in the greenhouse... yet... but it's only because the moths haven't found the plants yet. They could easily fly in and lay eggs.

As I observe you potting up your transplants and knowing you are growing them indoors... Do you have tips and tricks to avoid fungus gnat infestations inside the house? I've been soaking my seedling medium in boiling water, in a sealed bucket for about 2 hours and that helps a lot. I dread indoor growing because of the bugs but I live in Aurora, Oregon. Zone 8b which sounds warm but we get cold here too. In fact today we were at 22 degrees and have had 24 hours of a total ice rink outside. So I really have to grow my seedlings indoors to get the head start for a better crop of food. I've had nominal success with winter sowing. And to be transparent I'm space challenged so I grow my seedlings in my bedroom. So any advice that you have had success with would be helpful. Thanks. P.S. I've grown Orange Hat and Micro Tom but found the flavor to be lacking. They're fantastic gifts to give fellow gardening enthusiasts.

I use this: www.gardensalive.com/product/knock-out-gnats-trade-granules It's Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis-- expensive, but a tiny bit goes a looooong way. Another method to stop them right off the bat, would be to do what @CBsGreenhouseandGarden does. Hi Helen- for the varieties I mentioned that I've already grown, you can find them here territorialseed.com/collections/tomato/products/red-velvet and here www.totallytomato.com/product/T00650/82 Also, I didn't mention this one, but it's another nice one I've tried territorialseed.com/pages/search-results-page?q=cocoa%20tomato To my knowledge, the others that I mentioned aren't availabe in the states yet (I'm just trialing them), but I hope they are soon. In the meantime, Renaisssance Farms has a whole line of micros renaissancefarms.org/product-category/tomato-categories/micro-dwarf-tomatoes/ I've not grown these, but have heard from quite a few folks who have had great results with this seed!

Most of the new ones I mentioned haven't been released in the US yet (I'm hoping by next spring www.prudac.com/products/tomatoes). But the Pillar Catch Orange is available here: territorialseed.com/products/pillar-catch-orange The Siam can be found here: www.totallytomato.com/product/T00650/82 The Red Velvet here: territorialseed.com/collections/tomato/products/red-velvet and probably my favorite from the same series (not growing it this time around because I ran out of seed) is Cocoa: territorialseed.com/products/cocoa Also, I've not purchased from here yet, but Renaissance Farms has an amazing selection: renaissancefarms.org/category/micro-dwarf-tomatoes/

How do you handle late season blight? My tomatoes are still looking ok but it is so damn humid and getting convection showers now.
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 2 жыл бұрын
My main defense is growing varieties that have been specifically bred with blight resistance. It's a real problem here. I don't like to spray, but if I know it's going to be a really high pressure year, I start with a preventative spray (I use this: www.gardensalive.com/product/soap-shield-flowable-liquid-copper-fungicide-3 )

This is my 5th time planting these from different vendors who repeatedly sold me fake normal cherry tomatoes seeds. Wasted so much money and time. Maybe I finally have real ones I can grow in small hydro gardens this winter.

Hello, this is an interesting video, but don't waste your time pollinating your flowers with a brush, the wind from the fan is enough (tomatoes are self-fertile).
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 2 жыл бұрын
I used only a fan the first time I grew these, and had a lot of skips where blossoms dropped and did not form fruit. I suspect it may have been because I had the plants packed into such a tight spot, that the air from the fan just was not reaching all the blossoms... but I'm not certain about that. Now I hand pollinate just to be sure!

@@GrowfullywithJenna I grew cherry tomato plants hydroponically, indoors, with grow lights. My tomato plants produced all year round without interruption, for an entire year. I never did any hand pollination, just the fans running during the day (at low speed) and yet the production was constant and abundant. Could your problem come from too much heat, my tomato and strawberry plants which are in the same room are at 23 degrees centigrade. www.hebergeur-image.com/upload/171.244.184.58-60dd197fa6bb8.jpg

Calcium is considered a macro nutrient not a micro nutrient. Also, you should include copper, molybdenum, and boron, just to name a few. Get the rest of the story before you misinform your audience.

Thanks Loni- this made my morning 😄. Nibiru is correct- in the plant world calcium is classified as a macro and I mispoke (had my head wrapped around human nutrition 😆). Regardless- my point is ultimately that tomatoes will perform and taste better with a good mix of nutrients- macro & micro versus just giving them 'the big 3'.

Before you jump to criticize, their are many schools of thought of macro and micro nutrients. Calcium is considered buy many professional gardeners as a micro nutrient.
