I'm so happy I found your channel. I had been talking about growing mushrooms but never tried it. In the summer my grandma gave me a pink oyster kit just to try out how fun it was. My 6 year old son and I loved it so much that I have been trying to learn how to grow my own. I wish I had watched your cloning videos before we ate them all lol. Thank you so much for all you share about this amazing hobby (for me anyway). We really love watching. I've learned more from your videos than the many hours I spent reading prior to finding you. Thank you so much!

Lol, I just found out about grow kits and I’m already obsessed. I love the no-nonsense hobby versus business sides of your how to videos and also your failures are even more important because that way those of us who have never done it won’t be discouraged if our first few trying out runs have issues. We know to expect mistakes and what may solve them. So thank you.

I’m kinda curious. What do you do with the substrate after you’re done growing your mushrooms? Does it go to a nursery as mushroom compost? Do you dump it somewhere? I couldn’t imagine you’d have the space to compost it yourself since you work out of your home in a neighborhood. (?) Not sure what your living situation is.

Hey man, sorry for asking random question. I recently bought mushroom spawn that are growing in barley grain. I am wondering whether can I transfer and grow the mushroom spawn into liquid culture containing glucose and yeast? Normally, people will grow it in liquid culture and transfer it into the grain. I am just wondering if it is workable if do it in otherway round.

Hi. I just came across this video. Thanks for taking the time to make it! I want to try growing my own mushrooms and had previously come across the liquid cultures which is what led me to this video. Just a quick question... You flamed the needle instead of using the alcohol spray. Is the spray not enough to sterilize the needle or is flaming it because you don't want alcohol to contaminate the culture as you're injecting it into the grain?

@antmanmax1
@antmanmax1 5 жыл бұрын
Contaminants. Unless you're in a clean room (and even then, because even in clean rooms shit happens), good lab procedure is to sterilize the syringe between bags, jars, etc. There's spores and bacteria floating around everywhere, and using it without a metal syringe makes it harder to sterilize (you could spray the nozzle with alcohol, but then you're risking getting some alcohol in the culture, which is no good either.) It's better to spend a minute now practicing good lab procedures than risking the hours you spent working on spawn that goes bad.
@collectivegarden8475

Go through extensive lab procedures, only to not wear a face mask and talk to an audience on camera. Haha. I love this guy though he's awesome, but the mouth is probably the dirtiest part of a person besides the colon and anus. Lots of fungi and bacteria in the mouth. Also ppl are so afraid of their cultures ruining. On grain it makes sense cause that's more ideal for bacteria and mold then mushrooms. I'm fruiting oyster mushrooms in a bag I didn't sterile, on cardboard I didn't sterilize, cloned from stem buds I obtained none sterile. Also had it culture in a none sterile room with holes poked in it none sterile needle and no filter patch. Some mushrooms are tougher than we give them credit. We treat them like they're biologically weak, but think of the places they grow in nature. They're not weak, they just need a good head start and the right growing materials and conditions. We make them weak by constantly sheltering them from life.

If that is isopropyl alcohol you are spraying around liberally, you are seriously putting your lungs in danger. And then you use a naked flame... Great information, though. As someone who is still failing miserably at getting good results from liquid spores and grain bags, I had once thought using alcohol to clean the needle might have damaged the spores I want to grow just like the ones I don't want to grow. Does it just get too diluted enough when the liquid comes down the needle that you have no concerns about that?

I’m just starting my mushroom journey. I ordered 7 different liquid cultures & inoculated Uncle Bens ready brown rice bags. The mycelium is growing so fast! I’ll use those original bags to inoculate several other bags before putting them into my substrate. I’m glad I’ve got some time because I don’t have everything set up yet. Just trying to have what I need before I need it, but not before. I’m really excited!

I'm new to this and using Uncle Ben's Did you make holes at the top for gas exchange, and if so, how? Everything was going fine with mine, and then they crashed and started to have this empty strange smell. I don't think my GE holes were big enough, or I used the wrong micropore tape to seal them. Hope you've had some luck!! :)

@@RealBradMiller I’ve had a lot of contamination not having a clean room, but I’ll persist. I cut the top corner off & used micropore tape to cover it. Make sure you’re using paper tape.

@@remingtonfrog3170 It didn’t work out so well for me. Mold was a huge issue, so after spending hundreds of dollars, I gave up 😟

Soo.... was the needle actually needed then? Never used a syringe, but can they not eject liquid without the needle? Just curious!

No the needle is not necessary you can dispel liquid from a syringe without a needle.

Good video man I still say that Paul Stamets fermented mycelium culture technique is the most effect transfer tek I have ever studied. True liquid culture manufacturing requires expensive lab equipment that most of us can’t afford. As long as you develop a good scientific method for sterilization has down grain to grain transfers are the pinnacle of mushroom growing for any style of grow

I hope you are still able to read all these comments, because I could use some help! At 12:40, you are discussing why you don’t prefer using LC commercially, and mention the high contam rate once the GS hits the high nutrients in the master’s mix. This has been my experience consistently after dozens of attempts, with a variety of manure loving LCs (I’ve had better luck with hard wood lovers.) I was only pressure sterilizing for 90 minutes, though, and wonder if that could be why? I’ve pressure canned food for decades and have never gone over 90 minutes at 15 psi, so I figured that was good, but maybe not? Or should I try a less nutrient rich substrate mix, perhaps? Thoughts much appreciated! (I binge watch your content periodically, I’ve learned a lot from you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!)
