I just found your channel and really love it. I would like to see more of your gardens and what you plant together. And indeed more about how to propogate plant. And things like.. when you try to propogate lavender or the sorts. Or even hedging, after you get it to root and pot op. Do you trim it to Bush out? Do you do it when potting on or wait a bit... went through your videos on one evening. Loved them. So jealous of your garden. Where do you ever get the time?

What kind of soil do you use?
@MurphysGarden
@MurphysGarden 2 жыл бұрын
I just use regular multi-purpose compost. It’s a good idea to mix in perlite or grit to improve the drainage, that way the soil doesn’t go mouldy causing your cuttings to rot.

I bought one nepeta and it hasn’t done well. It started to droop shortly after I planted it, so I moved it, and it just never took off. Then I guess the bloom cycle ended, so I cut it back hoping it was spring back, and after about 2 weeks, it’s leaves are green but no real blooms have come on it. What am I doing wrong. It was in a spot that got 5 or 6 hours of sun.
@MurphysGarden

I think you’ve done the right thing in cutting it back, that way it can focus on establishing its roots and hopefully it will start to flower soon. Sounds like you’ve got it in the right place, so just keep it well watered until it is established. Once it is they are established, they tough and trouble free plants. Cut hard back after it flowers and it will repeat flower all summer. They do take a while to establish, the cuttings that I did in the video are doing really well this year but they took a couple of years to really get going. Hope that helps Good luck Jenny

Does it apply to nepeta cataria as well? I have a big plant (actually a bunch of them in the same spot) that I grew from seeds, from time to time I cut a lot of the leaves because for some reason they start growing white spots and then turn brown and eventually those leaves die. Those plants always grow stronger in a few weeks after cutting them. Now that I have seen this video, I wanted to grow a few more but it takes ages from seeds (took me 2 months to partially established), is it possible to just cut some big branches and replant them?
@MurphysGarden
@MurphysGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, nepeta cataria should establish well from cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. The other very quick way if you’ve got a biggish clump is to split it in the spring. You can also stick some cuttings in a glass of water (follow the same steps as for compost ie strip off excessive leaves) and place on a windowsill, change the water regularly until roots form. When they are about 2inches long (in a couple of weeks) pot up in compost. Lots of options and all are much less effort than from seed - good luck and hope you get lots of new plants.

@@MurphysGarden thank you so much! I will try it this weekend. Also is it normal some of the branches to dry out (brown) while most of them are fully green? Although when it happens it always comes back strong

@@leandrosoares9561 Hi Leandro, Although I don’t grow this type of nepeta, the nepeta racemosa that I do grow often goes a bit leggy or brown through the season and cutting it hard back produces new fresher growth. It’s pretty indestructible and will come back again and again until the first frosts when it dies back. The brown marks may be powdery mildew, in which case the treatment is the same, cut back. Hope this helps Jenny
@leandrosoares9561
@leandrosoares9561 2 жыл бұрын
@@MurphysGarden it seems exactly as powdery mildew! Thank you so much!
@MurphysGarden
@MurphysGarden 2 жыл бұрын
@@leandrosoares9561 Powdery mildew is a fungal disease so perhaps consider where the plant is and if it’s in a wet spot or lacks good ventilation. If you do move it, cut it right back first, that way you don’t transfer the disease and this also allows the plant to establish new roots without having to support a lot of foliage. Add a bit of grit if you have heavy clay soil to improve the drainage. Often problems go if the plant is happier.

So it does not grow by the seeds. Every once in awhile I have a plant pop up in my garden. So I thought it was from the flower that turns to seed.
@MurphysGarden
@MurphysGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Catmint is sterile so won’t self seed meaning that it is well behaved and won’t pop up where it isn’t wanted. It is however very easy to take cuttings and produce lots more plants if you do want more.
