Thanks for this. My catnip last year was prolific. Seems a bit behind this year here in 6a, and not as spread out. Not only do I use it for my cats but myself as well... Really calms my nerves and anxiety. Just bought some big planters and I will be putting this video to good use today!!! I'll probably even do some to keep indoors for all year if it's possible.

Nice, thank you! I have a very old catmint in a container that is just finishing its first flowering. It has been cut back for many years. It appears to have become a bit woody and floppy so I will try to take some cuttings. I love the plant - it is one of the few that the rabbits leave mostly alone. Your tutorial makes me optimistic about having more of this beautiful plant.

A little tiny piece broke off from another Walker’s Low. I put it in the ground where nothing grew, very little water, only rain really, and forgot it. The following year I noticed it was still there. A little bigger. This year it is about 6 to 8 inches wide and very noticeable. Hard to believe but happily so.

This is fantastic! My husband wants to make a catmint island, and I don't have enough catmint to cover the space. I've been trying to figure out how to add more without buying them. Questions: Should I keep them outside to root, and if so, do I put a plastic bag over them? If I keep them inside with a plastic bag over the top, what kind of light do I provide? If they are covered with a plastic bag (inside or outside), do I still need to water from the bottom or at all? Thanks so much for all your help. :)
@Growingthehomegarden

Check the soil every now and then and look at the bag you use to see if there is humidity. If the soil is moist and the humidity is present you don't need to water from the bottom.

@Growingthehomegarden

I generally would keep them out of the sun until rooting. So light shade would be ideal. Putting them under a tree that gets dappled shade would work well since the evaporation caused by the sun would be much less.

Can you maybe do a video about the difference between cutting the stem/branch internodal versus nodal, and why that makes a difference for propagation, and what the nodes even are. I’m new to gardening and herbs and all of this stuff so I’m trying hard to learn. Thank you!!!
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
I'll see what I can do on that. Sounds like some info that would be useful. In general you have a higher amount of hormones in the nodes. So you can have a greater chance of success with some cuttings that are nodal. Sometimes plants will only root from a node. Other times plants will root internodally and you can make many more cuttings from them, like hydrangeas.
@KyndalTheMeister
@KyndalTheMeister 4 жыл бұрын
Growing The Home Garden Do you cut right above the node, or just below it? I have an adorable pot and I want to give some catnip cuttings as a gift :)
@KyndalTheMeister

And I didn’t know about nodes having the hormones, very interesting. Thanks for letting me know, it’s nice not to always have to resort to searching on the internet. I also heard somewhere that when you make a cutting, you snip it at an angle. Not sure if that’s a thing or what that does 🤔

It does help you identify which end of the cutting is down. It also may help you stick the cutting into the medium.

Once they've grown a bit, do you transplant the whole set together, or split them up so each plant has lots of room to grow?

I always split them up. Usually into separate pots to grow a little larger but they can be put directly in the garden if they have enough roots.

@@HomewardMozart It sounds like it may be a multiflora rose. Those are quite invasive here in TN and I wouldn't recommend propagating it. Get a nice climbing rose that isn't invasive and it can serve the same purpose in your garden. Those can also be propagated through cuttings.

How do you know that the root took hold? I just propagated some last night and watered them and today they are all laying on their side like they are dying. I had them in the shade but moved them to the sun think that might help. Or is it normal for them to wilt the first couple days?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 3 жыл бұрын
It's ok if they lay down some. Catmint tends to be floppy sometimes and if you have tender growth it may do that. Dappled sunlight is OK but nothing direct as they may not be able to retain water while they are trying to form roots. Roots will take a few days or more to form. I've seen them root in as few as 4 days and as much as a couple weeks. In about a week if you gently tug on a cutting and feel resistance you probably have roots. Then you can gently remove it from your medium and pot it into it's own pot if you have roots.

Question: we are about to have a frost within the next week up here in Central Montana. I was thinking about propagating my cat mint in the next day or two and put in my greenhouse in April. What is your advice for me? am I jumping the gun? I would like wonderful roots. I have a dome planter and I hope to make about 50 of them.
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 10 ай бұрын
I think I would wait until spring. It will grow fast once the weather warms up again. Or you could divide it into pots, place in your greenhouse a few weeks before the last frost date and get some early growth. Then take cuttings in the greenhouse from those potted divisions. I probably wouldn't try making a bunch of cuttings right now as you will have to maintain them and they may not put on enough growth before color weather comes. If you heat your greenhouse you could do it but I think waiting until spring is going to have better results.

You don't need to. Just trim off the flowers from the cutting when you root them. They should root well anytime. If you waited it would be hard to find the right time since it blooms constantly.

They are pretty tough plants so I would probably give it a good deep watering once a week if there isn't any rain. If it has excessive heat them maybe a little more. That being said we had only 3 inches of rain in July and I never watered. The catmint did fine but didn't bloom much.

Hmm, I have three cuttings in water right now, waiting for them to root back. Should I put them in soil right away instead? And does your catmint, being a mint plant, aggressively spread around? I have reserved a foot square for those three cuttings, I'd want them to toe their garden lines.
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
The 3 cuttings in water i would probably just use soil for. Most cutting do better if placed in a darker environment more similar to what their roots would naturally form in. The catmint doesn't spread much for me. Catnip however spreads aggressively if allowed to go to seed.

@@KyndalTheMeister botanically they are in the same genus but have some differences. Nepeta x faasini is the cultivar I have and used for the example 'Walker's Low'. Catmint does not have the same chemical in it that attracts cats. Nepeta cataria is the botanical name for catnip and can be a magnet for cats! It's more of an herb that can be used in teas.
