Oh wow! I have to downsize my garden this year and told myself I wasn't growing onions.😒 Those onions look so good, and I have those seeds. What to do? 🤔 You bet I'm dropping onion seeds manana! I'll just add a grow bag or 2 to the space.😄 Great video...as usual!👍 Happy 2024!🎉

For hot areas (same as mine) you just need to start very early. Late fall is the best time. Hope you have a better result next time and thank you so much for your comment!😊

I have tried growing vegetables and grow bags and it doesn't work for me so perhaps that's the problem just continue to grow in regular containers or raised beds
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 ай бұрын
@@miztri The main difference with grow bags is that they loose moisture more often and need more watering. Hope you will have abetter results with pots.

🇨🇦I’m on a farm and have a very fertile garden soil. I have topsoil mixed with cattle manure. In fact last test all the nutrients were on the high side. I’m guessing I can get away with no additional fertilizer. I’m enjoying your videos very much especially the sound of those roots letting go near the end 😊

What type of fertilizer are using when they are transplanted liquid or granular?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Ай бұрын
I usually use granular 3-4-4 (Garden-tone) . It is slow release and can be applied less frequently. The liquid ones have quicker effect but needs to be applied more frequently (weekly). But both will work. Hope this helps.

What soil and compost do you like using for your veggies and fruits?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 5 ай бұрын
If you want to use bagged compost (and if you live in US) you can use Kellogg garden "Amend" kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/amend-garden-soil-for-flowers-and-vegetables/ or organic "Garden Soil" kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/kellogg-garden-organics-all-natural-garden-soil/ . Many garden centers carry them. Hope this helps and thanks for visiting.

Is it normal for the onions to be flopping over before they've bulbed? I'm wondering if its the wind or something
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 ай бұрын
For seedlings and newly transplanted plants that is normal since they don't have the strength yet. But for mature ones, there can be many reasons for top leaves to drop early. One of them is wind. Strong winds can cause tops to become weak and fall over. The other reasons are mainly due to fungal or pest disease. Also overwatering can be another cause for them to flop over. If you don't notice any major problem with leaves and the plants, then it is definitely the wind. Protecting them from strong winds and providing some support will help them grow normal. hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Can the tops be cut off before drying them
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 ай бұрын
It is better to keep them while drying. If you cut them before bulbs are cured, bacteria and fungi will reach to bulbs and lead to bulb rots. It basically helps to store them longer. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Can I cook or eat the onions right after harvesting, or do I need to wait for the onions to cure?
@TowardGarden

Yes, you may harvest and eat onion at any time. The main purpose of curing is to extend the storage of them. Thank you for visiting and happy growing!

Why not let the necks bend first? Should get a larger bulb, right?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 5 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct. Bending necks is the best sign and I mentioned it in the video. But since I am in a hot summer zone, this is the best they can grow for me. If I wait longer, they go flowering instead of growing bulbs. Thank you very much for visiting and sharing your knowledge!

Once cured where do you keep stored in Florida?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 ай бұрын
I am not sure how the weather is in your area in Florida, but general rule is to store them in a cool and dry area. Use onion bags or shallow boxes and place them in a well ventilated place such as cellar, pantry, or even a garage (away from direct sunlight and with 65-70% humidity). If it is too humid, place Silica Gel moisture absorber packs around them. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!
