Just throwing some info out here for people. Gardeners have had great success with starting peas inside. I do both inside and out and have never had a difference in the growth. Also if you have hot summers and want a fall pea harvest starting seeds indoors is an excellent choice as peas don't like to germinate in hot soil, so starting them inside will increase your germination rate then plant them out and they will mature in the cooler fall temps.

Our family loves peas, and each of us prefers the different varieties, so we end up growing all 3 kinds. The best thing about Aussie weather, is we plant mid-autumn once the summer heat is gone and we grow all the way through till about the start of summer.

Thanks for this great video! I have been trying to grow peas, all kinds…snap peas, shelling peas, snow peas both disease resistant and not, but it always gets powdery mildew before it’s harvestable. I have tried for 2 straight years(year round), nonstop, in different parts of my garden even in a hanging 4’x2’ wood box that I had made so it’s not touching any of my soil. I used new bagged potting mix but it still got the mildew. As soon as I finish all my seed packets of peas, I’m giving up.

James - thanks for all the good advice and for the enthusiasm. First year growing so I could use your experience. Planted snap peas late because we didn't get the seeds earlier and going through a heat wave. Are they still likely to flower once the temperatures cool down a bit?

I don’t know if it’s a purchased soil/container gardener thing but I always have to use granular inoculant. Every season I try again without it... and two weeks later have to start over with inoculant when I see my peas stunt at about 4” of growth. Just wanted to share this for other new gardeners wondering why they failed. Inoculant can really help. Still, once you get them growing I think they’re the most satisfying crop. Peas are a gardeners (and Tucks) best friend. Garden snacks for everyone. 🥳

I planted my peas in march here in zone 6b as soon as the soil was workable theey survived snow and hard frost. Now they are 5 to 6 feet tall and fruiting like crazy. I also give them a one time watering with some triple 20 I had hanging around when they were about 5 inches. What this did was give them a little boost. The triple 20 as we all know washes right through so the nitrogen didn't stick around long enough to effect the fruiting stage. PS I also hit them with that fertilizer because the bed I planted in was a flower bed and it had some really spent soil in it.

I've not grown peas yet, but I certainly will. Thanks for this video dedicated to growing peas! Thanks for mentioning the birds and the netting. I've thought about that for a number of plants. However, I'm confused about which ones I can used netting on, and at what times during the season, because don't they need to be pollenated, so don't bees have to be able to get in there? How do you handle this? Thanks James!

Covering the seeds and then watering generously often results in rotting for me, for 30-80% depending on the peas type. To prevent rotting (and bad smell) I allow seeds to swell in water and lay them in a wet towel to gain a root of 2x peas diameter. Than plant those by pushing into soft soil but not covering. That helped a lot with survivebility.
