Can i use a pesticide like SEVEN? Afids are tearing up everything. i have a 7X3.5 ft raised bed. Built an A frame and use 40% shade cloth over the A frame otherwise the desert sun would have killed everything in a week. I put cedar much arounf the plants. That helped a little with the bugs. Please advise

Love your videos, especially how you go into detail. I've been trying to figure out how to get ants out of my raised bed garden? I've used diatomaceous earth, cinnamon and boric acid mix (not in the soil of course). Any one have any ideas on how to combat those critters? I've been spraying my plants with the safer brand to keep the aphids and white flies contained. But those pesky ants are a pain.

I love your videos, but we have such a short season, and are older so we like bush tomatoes for our garden. I would love to see your suggestions and methods for bush tomatoes.

Try using a high wood or metal tubing clothesline trellis "T" shape, like a raspberry or blackberry cane or grape vine trellising. Run metal cabling between the 2 (or more) trellis structures. Using the same tomato vertical line machines, you can alternate these on the cables. Using this design, you can plant EVEN MORE tomato plants per row. Using the tomato clips, you can diagonally lean out the tomato plants to the left and right, giving more air- and sun-space with each plant. The diagonal use allows the tomato vine to also bend outward, and easily lower down when needed. With the plants leaning L, R, L, R, L, R, L ... each plant gets more sunshine and doesn't grow into (and fight with) the other plants. You can have maximum production in a smaller space.

Using the new method of sucker grafting locations for additional tomato production, one can outward trellis these offshoots as an upper espaliered canopy, like an upside-down christmas tomato tree.

I'm still not entirely sure what I should do, using raised beds from community garden, previously used by other <successful > gardeners. I plan on covering with cardboard and straw. Should I remove all weeds, amend with compost then add the cardboard, plants, etc?

Great tips! What kind of hoop houses do you use (the white ones)? Mine are flimsy and yours look really sturdy. And what do you cover them with?

Hope my boi likes garden snacks as much as Tuck does. ❤😍❤ I always have issues with my cucumbers when transplanting. They sit there for a while before taking off... and I do harden off my plants and wait until nights are in the 50's. Also, we always have a weather event in late May, or even early June, like a hail storm, and that either wipes out plants or stunts their growth. So, instead, I direct seeded them in the ground yesterday. This way, by the time they come up, we should just have good warm weather. I'll cover everything if we have a late hail storm and protect them better this year.

Question.... do you rotate where you plant your tomatoes or do you just amend the soil? For a gardener with limited space that's too much for me to do so I'm just going to amend and plant them and see 🤷🏿‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️

Great video, and yes, I’m doing lower and lean with 8 indeterminates in a 2x8 raised bed. I’m looking forward to the pruning video because I’m struggling with what is the stem and what are suckers in the very top of the crown, and it’s also hard to determine how much foliage to leave on the single stem. ❤ to Tuck. As an aside, I attached unused clips to my upper string so I’m not pulling out the box every time I work in the tomato bed. This way I prune, weed, and add support in one visit.

I have a cattle panel...they grow even above it....if I trim the tops will it force new growth in the plant and make more tomatoes below?? This would be like in August when they are at their fullest....i trim within also for sucker's and airflow...

Hey James, I am in Jersey as well and my first year's apples were totally destroyed. I think I need to apply the surround kaolin clay, do you wait until the fruit is just starting to grow to apply it? Thanks!! :)

Hey James, I've been watching your channel for at least 8 years! Your garden is so inspirational! I'm building my tomato trellis today - very excited! I have my raised beds full and covered with insect netting as well! My question is - when do you take the netting off? My onions and potatoes are hitting the top of it. I just ordered some Surround Kaolin clay - should I wait to have the clay to remove the netting?

I had access to free fresh wood chips from a local tree trimmer, and free wood mulch from the local recycling center, so I put a 3-4 inch layer on my terraced beds after the plants got big enough. Kept the weeds down and protected the fruits and vegetables from the southern heat. By next spring, there was usually less than an inch of mulch left, which usually got worked into the soil with other amendments, or raked aside and reused.

Once I saw you showcase these rollers last year I went online and bought them. I have now changed my cucumber beds to utilize them as well. I love them, and I noticed this year they have gone up in price. They are getting popular and the companies are cashing in.

FYI the red tomato clips last longer than the clear. When I first started using them many years ago, they were all red. The clear ones came out and they were a lot cheaper so I bought them but they were failing before the old red ones were and they were several years older and had been out in the sun longer. The red ones are a lot harder to find these days but for some reason the sun doesn’t make them crack as fast as the clear ones. Love ya Tuck ❤❤❤❤❤!!!

But how often do you top dress fertilizer during the season? once a week? every two weeks? a month??? To not burn them but to get lush foliage and fruit.
