You're not using a spore syringe for morticulture... (dead wood agriculture) Unless you are running the mycelium & making your own plug spawn or doing your own genetics. Unless you are growing these as part of a buisness, plug spawn for wood ears is cheap enough that you don't need to make the spawn yourself. Which is arguably the most expensive and difficult part of the process. Instead of buying a spore syringe just buy plug spawn. Likewise when you are drilling, you want to sanitize between boring each hole. As the drill introduces potential contamination from the surface as it drills down and from previous holes. This step is often skipped in videos but it is Best Practices and can help reduce time to colonization & increases successful fruiting. Unlike growing from bags indoors, the visual identification of contamination in morticulture is much more difficult & you often won't find out a log has failed until other logs are fruiting and some are not. It is better to side with caution the same way you would in the lab & just sanitize between drilling. Finally, gentle care in harvesting isn't about not harming the mycelial network. Which studies have repeatedly shown isn't effected by harvesting. What IS affected is the integrity of the product as wood ears & other mushrooms can be easily damaged which reduces their value & fresh sold shelf life.

I stumbled on this jelly ear yesterday, and I want to collect spores from it to start my own home culture. I have no idea how though, I've never grown shrooms before. I used the knife to carefully remove it from the log, and I also collected a piece of wood which was covered in white film, which I assumed might be spores. If not, can you advise me on how to collect the spores properly, and store them until I can start growing? Thank you!
