MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I'm 21 and I know how to cook more then most of my friends that are around my age. But as soon as I turned ten I was expected to help on the kitchen and by thirteen I was expected to be able make dinner on my own. I can even make bread from scratch.

@@thebossoftheswamp now the rest of the story... he would have all the grandkids chop wood for the stove which was good for us we got to use an axe and do things our parents often would say no too... a few years backs one of my uncles told me that in the shed behind where the stove was kept, he had a still and was using the wood to make shine....lol.. he did teach us to repair things and not just throw it away, I'm teaching my grandkids to do the same thing.

Cooks fantastic, makes my coffee in the morning, never wake up in the morning to a dead fire and super efficient, saves firewood,

I will never understand why so many of us became so reliant on "the grid." It's tough to hear stories about some control against things like the wood fire. It just makes more sense to provide for oneself - especially when it comes down to the basics of survival. We put way to much responsibility of others. I can tell you that I've relaxed a bit too much. I don't believe this is a novelty at all, but rather a necessity to community and mostly self. The tough part is to get something back that you've let go. The great thing is,, it's never really gone, you just have to relearn it while its easier, instead of crash-learning it when its really needed. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing your lifestyle. It's not only inspirational, it's the way to a person's freedom.

I asked him if we could just live at the camp and he always had an excuse why we couldn't. I wish he would have just let us grow up there. Life was always so much simpler at the camp and that's why I went to the woods as soon as I could. ... and stayed there. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I'm based in the UK and just purchased a second hand Rayburn supreme solid fuel woodcook stove for £200. This also has a back boiler which will be doing our hot water and heating 5 radiators elsewehere in our houseboat. We get our wood for free from my families forestry company and also trees on our own land. We were reliant on two log burners for our main heating source but this Rayburn will take our off grid and self sufficiency venture to the next level. Can't wait.

Hey Boss, love your videos, I watch everyone, sometimes several times. But I gotta say this, with all respect. But, a lot of off griders/home steaders would love to have a wood stove like yours, including myself, but they just can't afford one. As for myself, I am a disabled Vet trying to survive on a very small income. There are months that after I pay my few bills I have to live off $200 or less. Buying a used wood cooking stove is way out of price for me. And installing it is out ragious, ie stove pipe etc. I am 65 and and live alone. But hey, I'm not complaining. The VA is helping more than I could ever dream.

There's pros and cons to both old and new. There are some things I do like about the antiques but overall I prefer the KQ. It eats a lot of wood though. Thanks for watching.

The KQ is a dandy for sure but I wish it was ornate like my antique Crawford. You'll be seeing that appear again when I get to work on my NH cabin. The Utubers haven't seen that place yet.

My grandma had a stove with the different circle in it. I was surprised I remember that from 60 years ago.
