But if you can't charge at home, there are ways to make massive savings with very little effort. So if you can't charge at home, this video is for you. And if the lack of homecharging was preventing you from going EV then this might just change your mind.

Do what I did, I got a part time job in a Tesco working one night a week. I charge my Car over night on a pay point charger. When I finish work it’s fully charged for under £15 plus I got paid for the evening. Sounds bonkers but I’ve paid less than £600 a year for an EV I use every day and earned £7000 in wages to boot which in turn pays my finance. I have a full time day job but I balance this without too much pain.

Very happy to see you champion this Dave. A lot of the media don't help the issue by only quoting the highest rates. I refuse to pay anything above 60p kWH. I have an Ionity Passport and when I can't charge there I would love to use Tesla. We need more Tesla superchargers open to all.

@@TomLawlor-iq6gm this post is about charging when not at home. Even in the UK we have cheap home charging. I pay 9 pence kWH for home charging. Its the public charging that is extortionate here in the UK.

@@MrDAVIDATKIN David, I understand that you're speaking to those who must (through necessity), utilize charging stations. We here can charge at home for about the same as you can in the UK. We finally received our 2024 Prime six weeks ago and, from "empty" the battery can be "enlivened" for less than $ 2.00 CAD. Given the 80Km that allows, it's less expensive for us to use hydro then the same distance covered by petrol. Current price for Regular fuel here is $ 1.86 CAD (a Litre) My point is/was, the excessive cost for UK motorists to charge "on the go" would just not work here. Where we live in Canada, we pay far more for both gas and hydro than the rest of the NA continent on average. My wife and me are lucky (to date), we haven't had to avail of "private" suppliers. So to be honest, I've no clue what an "electric pump" costs here. But, I assure you it's far less than what your fellow punters pay. There are twelve free of charge stations within 5 Km of our home, we have yet to visit any of them. We were in London recently and thoroughly enjoyed a five day stay. I can't say enough just how amazed I was with the number of EV's and hybrid vehicles we saw in the inner city ( not to mention, the other delights). Having watched several of your posts, re charging costs, I'm left wondering, how much extra the owners are paying. We're full onboard with electric but, cost matters, and, in a big way..........She's near 60, I'm 65. Pensions never factored-in an EV "revolution". Too bad we missed each other last month, I imagine we could have had a stellar conversation about this issue.

BE.EV now charging £0.89p. BP Pulse, with membership, £0.44p. Both 150kw chargers, and half price coffee at Wild Bean Cafe!

I’ve been driving electric cars since July 2020. I prefer using an electric vehicle because it only costs me £15 at most to recharge the car. I live in the south east of England and need a car that I can afford to keep fuelled.

Dont forget freinds & family for charging. My daughter has an EV, a drive and has a 7kw charger. She is 3 miles away... If (when) I get an EV I can drop it over there once a week or so & pay her for the Electricity. Its about being a bit creative somethimes.

This only works if you live fairly close to the open supercharger. Diminishing returns on cost and time if you're further away.

I live in Berkshire and plan a journey to Sidmouth next week. There’s a paucity of Tesla chargers open to non-Tesla’s in whole swathes of the westward journey whatever the route. Fortunately I can get down without charging on the way. This leaves me having to charge at absolutely exorbitant prices at the local chargers in this area.

Just done a few calculations on the St Andrews charger in Birmingham, not that I'd like to park there! The off-peak rate is 41p and the members rate is 33p. Add the journey to get there and back and there isn't a lot of difference. And you haven't taken into account the time driving and charging. You would basically lose an evening a week, minimum, just to charge if you're 20 miles away. No Tesla open to all near Leicester or Nottingham.

I can't charge at home as I live in a flat but I bought a tesla after seeing the price difference they charge to some of the ones closer. If I can't charge at work (yes I'm lucky but it's a 3pin plug) I spend 1 night a week charging and pay super off peak rate. Saves me loads

In the USA Tesla charges the same rate regardless of the time. I think it’s because Tesla insurance penalizes drivers for being out after 10PM (11PM for newer policies). It would be counterproductive to save money on charging to pay more for insurance. Yes I realize you’re not talking about the USA but I was just giving a perspective from the other side of the pond. Also keep up the great work with the channel. I love it!

I've got a challange for you Dave. Forget london, manchster etc. Here's a location. Fareham, just off the M27 now, say you were to live there, and not be able to charge at home. How can you follow your own advice? The nearest Tesla that's open is Guilford, so that's a non starter.

I completely agree. And the figures that he quotes are for the middle of the night. He quotes charging in Manchester at the Trafford Centre to get the price. He is quoting you have to go there at 10 o’clock

@@junehanzawa5165 I drive an Ioniq 5. What I'm saying is that there are still many challenges to full adoption and you cannot take things at face value. There's more to it than you think. I'll be headed down to that area for a while, so it's a very real challenge for me. Luckily, I think I'll be able to charge from a house, so it's not as big an issue, but it still might be a thing to deal with.

People use slow Be.EV chargers at Parson Lane North in Bury because I don’t think they don’t need to pay to park. (The price of parking has gone up recently) I think the AC chargers on the Foundry Street car park are up to 22kW

If you've got a city EV with 150 miles or less range then you really don't want to drive 20+ miles to get home after charging. My e-Golf 80-10% range is probably around 100 miles. Probably around 130 miles or so at 100-5%. Lowest I've gone was like 7% and it claimed 10 miles left. Heater shuts off at roughly 16 miles left so not very comfortable in winter. Luckily I have chargers all over the place here in my town in Norway. Never bother with the slow AC chargers as they cost 4.49-4.89 NOK/kWh while fast DC charging is 4.50-5.50 NOK/kWh without a subscription. I do use one of them during the day (9am-5pm) if I have to park in town, as the price for AC charging is the same as the parking fee if I limit my EV to 13A. EVs plugged in get free parking.

It will be lovely when Tesla decide to install a V4 supercharger site near Lancaster, it's a 50 mile drive to Trafford, currently not many options in this part of the country to charge publicly for less than 65p/kWh.

There’s 12 Ionity chargers just east of Manchester charging 50p/unit and lots of other HPC charge points too.

@@G6EJD thanks, but that's 61 miles away for us, there is another Ionity closer in Darwen but that's still 41 miles. Lancaster (& surrounding area) is a bit of a desert for cheaper public charging spots and makes EV ownership rather more challenging for those who are unable to plug in at home.

I really hope either competition or gov stamp down on these really outrageous charging prices, because unfortunately if you do have to use public charger for all your charging needs then unfortunately at most of these charges these cost are going to cost you a lot more than it would to fill up a efficient petrol / Diesel car, and this is why there is a case for Hybrids cars if it really impractical to make the switch to a full ev.

I signed up to share my home charger with co-charge at 32p per KWh, It is the cheapest option in the town we live in and around 40% of the houses do not have a driveway locally. For me, charging through the day will break even but charging over night will return a profit. This helps me offset the £1400 install cost for my charger and helps bring down the local costs.

Have you had anyone take you up on it yet? I'm offering at 20p (as long as it's less than that during the Octopus tariff time). I was trying to find someone locally to come and get a free charge during the recent negative plunge pricing :)

@@djtaylorutube I only registered yesterday. My house would be the most local charge point to a local castle so may get people on days out etc. I’m not going to make much but if it’s just sitting there doing nothing for 20 hrs a day it might as well be an option.

Source London (most street chargers 7KW/11KW/22KW) also offer a membership and a residence discount so they are cheaper than you state if you’re signed up. I don’t use them because I live right next to a Tesla supercharger and charge up for 45mins once a week after 10pm.

It’s not just the local council charging high prices for public charging it’s also the private companies that own the chargers. They are only interested in the profit for their shareholders dividend. It’s becoming an electric car Wild West charging. Why should we go and try and find a cheaper charger when I can go to a petrol station and know roughly the price per litre. Keep your petrol or diesel car.

In North Yorkshire many council carparks have Connected Kerb chsrgers priced at 40p and at a rate of 11 - 22 kw. Some people are using them over night. I have some close to my house and could use them if I couldnt charge for less at home.

I live in King’s Lynn, there is a Tesla charging station here but it’s not open to other EV’s yet and the nearest one after that is 40 miles away, does anyone know if there is a way of finding out if/when it will be opened up?

CityEV here on the Wirral is 35p per kWh but sadly on a residential street and you can rarely park by them. Flint Tesla is about 15 mile from me but it’s a lovely run out and last me a week!

My old Zoè don't do CCS, so got no option to charge at a supercharger, plus the nearest one is Bristol @24miles away. I have to use a 22kw local charger @20-21ppkwh.(or 79ppkwh@43kw charge that i never do)

I thought EV charging was meant to be easy, 10 seconds per day I’m continually told. The thought of my student daughter having to drive to a charger in the middle of the night and wait for 30-40mins sounds downright dangerous.

The whole premise of the video is for those that don’t have a home charger’. We do and have averaged 1200km per month and needed 4 public fast chargers. For all of them we ate while the car charged, so literally no lost minutes. I agree with you about some of the charger locations though. We charge at home except on the occasional long trip and there are too many charger locations that are a bit too dodgy for me for her to go n her own.

I'm a big big big fan of EV ownership and driving. Genuinely cannot see myself going back to ICE or PHEV. But ... I firmly believe that with the economics of buying a more expensive EV (versus ICE), I would not have an EV if I could not charge at home.

Recently went and tried my "local" Tesla open-to-all chargers. 54p/KWh ("premium" when I got there, didn't have a great deal of choice in the timing though), plus a £1.30 parking charge because they are in a local authority car park. Still cheaper than going to any of my more local rapid chargers. With better planning re: the time I could be saving 30p/KWh and still paying a fixed £1.30 parking charge. Not that it matters to me particularly, yes, Tesla cables are a good deal lighter feeling than other charge networks cables; with a number of other networks cables, I have to hold in the plug at negotiation to get the car to start charging, not so with the Tesla (V3? The big, white slab chargers...) cable.

Even for a single full charge around 50kWh at 79 pence it would be £39.50 but with a £5.49 membership for Ionity it is £28.00, so you save even for the one charge. This is a good thought for those of us that can charge at home and travel on the odd long journey requiring a Rapid charge along the route.

Hi Dave i also can not charge at home so i take my car to my sons house once a week and charge over night and then bus it back the next day to collect it this has worked well over the last 4 years if i need a top up i go to Aldi at 24pence when i go shopping once per week its all about getting into a routine so it costs me about £25 per month to go anywhere i like local.

Some of My friends and family charge at my home nearby because I have a large driveway and they just pay me for electric. They leave it there overnight I even take them all home and picked them up. I’m retired so I don’t need to be anywhere else. if it helps them out, I don’t mind.

I live in Hereford been weighing up the pros and cons as I’m getting g my next car on motability soon , I want to go electric as I like the concept most of our chargers in our town Hereford is 42 p per kWh . The most expensive is a fast charger at the swimming pool car park which is 79 per kWh . We don’t have Tesla superchargers near think nearest is Worcester or Gloucester. But not too bad and I only get fuel once per. Month and I only go day trips two or three days a yr max .

I'm fortunate enough to charge at home on a cheap rate and on my Kia e-Niro I get 4.2 miles per kW - however when I changed the tyres to Goodyear Efficiency Grip Performance 2 tyres (A rated for fuel efficiency) it jumped to 4.8 miles per kW. I just wondered if others had experience something similar?

Ubitricity charges 24p/kWh (incl VAT) for on-street lamppost charging in Wandsworth in SW London. No additional fees to be paid Slow as treacle though

Is it 3.5kw speed? That's probably doable. I charge once a week on home at 6.2kw so double the time would be fine.

I get the same results changing 3 times a week on a 22kW unit. 5,375 miles cost me £417 or 27p kWh or 8p mile. So why do I charge 3 times a week? Simply because the car park (Aldi) has a 1.5 hour restriction and I don’t want to be more than 1 hour anyway.

I live in Stockport and almost all my local chargers are Be.ev at 72p/kwh. The prices increased in September 2023 from 49p to 72p kWh I stopped using them from that time. I have complained to my local MP and Council to no avail. I suspect many council’s see these chargers as a money maker. I used to use them at 49p/kwh. I don’t now! So they don’t get any money from me. I have a Tesla Membership. It’s far cheaper. I do wish tesla could open up a charging hub in south Manchester near Stockport though! I have a Renault EV so applied for the renault Specific Mobilize intense Charge Pass for £9.99 month. This lets me pay 43p/kwh on all ionity chargers. Other brands of cars may have similar memberships. I don’t use both of them simultaneously. Both memberships can be for just 1 month.

If you live in a coordination, South coyden. Train station needs a 7 kW. M, and will charge you twenty one pound a week to charge as often as you like But if you only wanna do it once in a while, go on a Sunday, they charge you 2 pound 60 to part there from 4 AM Sunday morning. Good morning dave hopefully l should be getting my Skoda Enyaq 85x sportline plus in June l think it can charge upto 175 kw l have already got my ohme EV charger fitted at home the range of the car when fully charged is 328 miles what outside charging points are the best to use for my car can a non tesla owner have tesla membership l know there are tesla chargers about 6 miles from my house near Meadowhall shopping centre although I don’t have my EV yet I like to do my research on how to get the best out of my EV for when I take delivery l subscribe to your channel to get video updates so I can get the best out come for me and my car l think your videos are very helpful and informative to help people like me to change from their ICE car to an EV cheers Dave Best wishes Kev

Dave. Source London offer a residents subscription which is £4 a month and 46p a kWh it’s also only 56p for octopus energy customers.

The key word is 'London'. It gets the lions share of all investments and infrastructure. Use zapmap and filter by charger networks, many are massively London centric.

Bromley central London? That's like saying Plymouth is central Cornwall! I couldn't see a rose tint on those spectacles!? No one does the average miles per mont/week/day, the average is worked out as including all those people like my OAP Mum whom drive 3k miles a year and then of course, there's those that hardly use their cars at all so probably only drive 1200 miles a year or so! This leads us into realising that the median driver who works, will drive more than 8k miles a year! Then there's the fact that no one will just drive 20 miles per day every single day of the year. Thankfully I have a big battery in my car but there's plenty of cars out there that will only get a max range of 70 to 130 miles, so if they go to somewhere with the family at the weekend where there are no chargers, or they work 30 miles away, they'll be needing to charge more than once a week! The average UK daily commute is 20 miles each way, add in trips out etc and Dave's average figure of 20 miles per day gets blown out of the water!

There’s a pair of 22kW type 2 chargeplace Scotland chargers in at the Morvern Business Hub in Lochaline (western Scotland) that are £1 per kWh. It’s unusual because to be fair, most of the Chargeplace Scotland chargers are pretty reasonable (between 27p and 60p per kWh)

For someone used to price per litre can you explain what price per kW works and how you can compare. Once you have moved over this not necessary but those used to status quo it can be confusing until you learn.

Yes Simon, quite easy really. Petrol consumption is expressed either as mpg or litres /100km. Variable miles covered on a set volume of fuel eg 30 miles per gallon. Variable amount of fuel consumed to cover a set distance eg 7.4 litres used to cover 100km. EV consumption is the same but simpler. We only use miles for distance and for fuel we use watt hours (Wh) and kilowatt hours (kWh). This gives: Variable miles covered for a kWh of battery eg 4m/kWh or variable amount of battery used to cover 1 mile eg 250wh/mile. Since we buy kWh at the chargers I find it easier to just look at miles covered per kWh bought. Your display can usually be selected to show your preferred method

@simonspeechley2859 There are approximately 10kwh in a litre of fuel , so a car doing 45mpg is using approx 1kwh of energy per mile , whereas most EV's average around 3.6 - 4 miles per kwh , so you can see the charging companies are piss taking with an equivalent price per litre of £ 7.90 when an EV is 4 times more efficient than combustion engined car , we need regulation of a maximum retail price of a kwh of electricity it used to be illegal to gear the price excessively when we had a Nationalised Electricity industry , we are witnessing extreme profiteering verging on criminality. £1.50 litre x 4.54 = £6.81 gallon , car averaging 45mpg (6.81÷45) 15.13 pence per mile . £0.79p kwh x 10= litre equivalent or £7.90 litre x 4.54 £35.86 per gallon of fuel. Bearing in mind my i3 has averaged 3.6 miles kwh for 85,000 miles divide £0.79 p kwh by 3.6 , 21.94 pence per mile , the crooks have priced a vehicle that achieves 3.6 m kwh x 10 ( litre) 36 miles per litre x 4.54 ( gallon) or 163.44mpg equivalent, at ££21.94 pence per mile it is corrupt and thoroughly indefensible , but hey welcome to rip off britain ( little b) it's not great it's backwards this land seems morally corrupt .

Even a so-called Granny charger at the cap-rate of 27p/unit is a bargain and one could charge a charge 43kWh between 18:00 and 06:00 that should be enough for a week of driving. I’ve noticed that people get obsessed with charging all the time!

Day 1 car is full. At 9pm get a call and have to rush into work, spend an hour there and drive home. 15KWh used. Half midnight another call, back in for 1 hour. Cannot go home as insufficient charge for a third call out. Solution is to sleep under a desk and try and ignore the cleaners hoovering the floors at 02:00 in the morning. Next day you have to be at work as being called out does not count re your daily hours (this is common). Then pop out at lunchtime to try and grab a quick charge ready for the next nights on call.

A granny charger charges at 2.3kw max in UK and that's on 230v plugs, so 12 hours would be 27.6kwh.

@@computerbob06 I don’t know where you get that figure from, a Mini variant charges at 2.9kW, a BMW also about 2.9kW and an Audi 2.7kW. A 13A socket suppling a full 13A at the nominal supply voltage of 230v would easily deliver 3kW. I think your charger must be faulty, or have been de-rated.

The only few campers there are that run on electricity are: Wheelhome Vikenze III on Vauxhall Combo Life Electric The Nissan NV200:300 with various conversions. Where do these facts come from? My daily commute is 60 miles round trip, 85% of the people in the town where I live commute at least 25 miles each way to and from work, in the town where I live, there's ONE active charge point, there's quite a few installed but not connected to the grid but only ONE working charge point How do you know how much you're paying for electricity? I drive a Smart diesel, 80+ miles per gallon, I know what I'm paying for diesel, I can pay with cash, I fill up once a week, it costs around £20 a week to commute back and forth to work, if I bought a car that does the equivalent of a week's driving, I would have to buy a much bigger car, average cost for say a used Kia, Hyundai, Tesla, etc, I'm looking at having to find at least £25-30000, then I have to buy a credit card or bank card, a technical phone, I'm not qualified in technical phone or computer technology, electric vehicle ownership is too complicated and the infrastructure is not there yet

You really are starting g to p!ss me off with this average bs, just because the average mileage is 20 miles a day doesn't mean everyone does 20 miles a day. Both ne and my wife have evs MG4 short range 50kwh (140-200 miles) and mini (100-140 miles) 30kwh I regularly do 40 miles just doing the school run plus I drive a lot in rhe evening for my job so often near 100 miles a day and my wife's commute is 60 miles a day so we both charge every day luckily at home. I usually make use of the over night rate and charge anything upto 30kwh and she charges while I'm out at work usually about 15kwh. This CAN NOT be done once a week or even every other day so stop assuming everyone does the average and stop talking so much sh!t

You keep mentioning average drivers, cars etc. There is no such thing as average. A person who is average height, shoe size, weight, hat size, and waist size, almost certainly does not exist. Claims of average daily mileage driven make no allowance for huge variations and cannot be used for calculations. Lets say I work at home but am on call. I keep my car in the 20->80% range but have to go into the office at random times. I have to keep it at 80% when at start of on call as more than one callout per shift is possible. Hence daily charging is needed. Missing a callout is career limiting. So yes people sometimes will need to do daily charging. I have in the past and it was unavoidable.

If you take out all the chargers that cost over 50p per kw, how many chargers would there be, and how much more cueing will there be to use the reduced amount of chargers. If you're in this situation do not buy an EV. What a hassle. Go to a garage and put petrol in. How the hell can you be bothered with all this. This madness will only get worse. If your a woman then definitely don't charge up at the witching hour. I may be safe but I bet it does not feel like it. A lonely out of the way place after midnight. You have to be mad.

Depends how important the EV vs ICE differences are. I dont like the emissions (not carbon) that come from tailpipes. They kill people and so a bit of hassle is OK for me to reduce that. I dont judge people who dont want to do that though.

This is so misleading for the majority of people. It’s just not reasonable to expect someone to drive 20+ miles one way to a fast charger that’s sub 50p kWh if they don’t have a home / work charger. I am happy with our two EV’s but if you couldn’t charge at home, I would recommend you stick with a petrol or petrol hybrid and wait for the technology to mature.

Except when you do. I borrowed a diesel vehicle last Monday. When full it had a 600mile range. 20->80% charging is only 60% battery capacity. Winter range is a huge reduction and shocked me in my then new EV. Put those two together and my EV has a horrible range. Fine for local journeys and I love it but for security frequent toping up is sensible (only to 80%). I drove 550miles on Monday so even had to put just under £65 of diesel in my borrowed car. Even ICE can need daily top ups.

Isn't rapid charging every time bad for the battery too? Trip the EV switch on your home charging consumer unit for 2 months and then come back and preach AFTER living without home charging for 2 months.

Lots of BS in this video. Who in their right mind will spend 3 hours a week charging their car. With Fastned you would have to use more than 54Kw (with my car that amounts to roughly 400 Kilometres) to break even, ??? Much the same with any of the special membership prices and doesn't include the extra kilometres on the car and the wasted kilowatts of electricity. I think you need to look at your sums again.

Drive 15 to 20 miles there, 15 to 2 miles back. That's three hours out of you life, in a built up area. Then there is the charging. So say four hours. how much is your time worth. 50 pounds and hour. Petrol is easier.

You have to charge from 10pm So what you’re saying is once a week I have to drive 10 miles to the Trafford Centre at 10 o’clock at night when it’s closed and sit there and charge my car. You’re seriously saying single. Women should drive to a closed shopping centre at 10 o’clock at night. If you’re going to give figures, please give realistic figures. There is no way I’m going to drive to charge my car at 10 o’clock at night and sit in an empty car park. Please give a more accurate and realistic price of what it really would cost if somebody would drive sit at a Tesla supercharger when anything is open to buy a coffee.

Even at the average Tesla membership price you still save around £15 per 40kWh charge compared to the rip off 79p per kWh rate and have the added bonus of going when the shopping centre is open, just check when the peak rate is and avoid this window. You could use the money saved each month for a thrifty treat as your reward for putting in that little bit of effort in.

If you go in the middle of the night. That is not realistic for the vast majority of people. I stopped watching a number of channels because they were turning into Clickbait this channel I’m afraid maybe going down the same route
