It's a marmite thing: you either love it or hate, but if you need to hand-catch because of dogs, kids or unsuitable terrain, then you need to know how to catch your drone and it's way easier than you think....
Comments on anything welcome below, even if it's just on how Ted helps with my editing continuity :)

I usually always launch from the ground using a landing pad, with the phantom line, I usually hand catch to bring it back in and with the mavic I land back on the pad, I am obsessed with keeping the equipment clean inside and out also

I always hand catch. I find it easier than worrying about where to put it on the ground. Also keeps it clean and away from any dust or sand. Often there is vegetation on the ground which impedes a safe landing too.

Agree completely that hand catches are safer for the drone. My first auto landing with P4, it somehow hesitated and a sudden small gust happened at the instant of touchdown... resulting in a "tripped" - but undamaged - P4. Since then it's a rare event to land in standard fashion. With fine grit that can unseen get lifted up in down turbulence and find its way into the motors, maybe cause a sudden seizure next fight... doesn't bear thinking about. But for me the Phantoms remain the easiest ones to hand catch. With Mavics I bring them down to easy reach then firmly grasp the fore section of the fuselage - avoiding the down-sensors. The Air can be side twisted to kill it or just do like the MavPro and hold the L. stick down to kill the motors. Easy.
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 5 жыл бұрын
The Phantoms have nice easy grab- bars for you! And the Air is so small it lands on your palm..... The Pro is always a little prone for prop-rev if you grab it, unless you keep your hand very still.... Cheers, Ian

Great vids you’re posting, thanks for the tips. Here’s one back for you re landing within inches of your take off point (ie: your table) When launching for the RTH sensors / camera to work send the Mavic up 10m min for it to get a good image of the RTH & it’s surroundings. It’ll land virtually Bob in ever time so long as there some sort of pattern. Let me know if you’ve tried that or how you found it for you. 👍

Hi Mark. Yes, I usually have precision landing switched on, but even then it can be a good foot out sometimes, so I do like to hand catch usually 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@mtheadspace5704
@mtheadspace5704 4 жыл бұрын
Have you taken it above 10m first. Straight up? I had a few ‘close but no cigar moments’ & then re-read the manual. It does say in order to land accurately it needs that high elevation not just the 2m or so we all normally take off & zoom off to.
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 4 жыл бұрын
@@mtheadspace5704 Yes sir.... I've found this to be the case when coming in from a full flight... I guess it's because I'm taking off from a small table and I don't want it to drift slightly and land with a leg over the edge and fall down. So I generally err on the side of caution and hand catch it... Safely above Ted's reach....👍🏻

Wow also a great video for illustrating the difference in noise levels. Don't suppose you have a way of measuring that?
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 5 жыл бұрын
It's very subjective; I have a dB sound meter but the numerical difference is so slight; it's all about the pitch. But each of the three clips was shot with the drone ultimately landing exactly the same arm's distance from the mic I'm wearing on my collar, so you can tell the difference pretty clearly. Cheers, Ian

Hey Ian great info and vid, bit off topic but would you be able to give me a bit of help as to why my 4k footage is jerky when playing back!!, i am using a samsung pro plus class 3 card 100mbs read speed and 90 write speed and the setting i used on the M2P was 4k/30fps which most people seem to use! On my ipad and have tried it on VLC on the pc but both no good to watch, only 1080 works okay so a bit confussed cheers daz
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Daz. Your SD card sounds fine. Have you tried a video editing program to downsize the a bit of jerky 4k video to 1080? If you do that and it then plays back fine, then you know it's simply playback capabilities of the device. 4K vid is very chunky. I have to use a gaming laptop with a dedicated video card to playback any 4K stuff from a file. A normal PC can't handle it. Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian thanks for getting back to me would you know if you can playback footage through a media player like 5Kplayer or vlc cheers daz
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 5 жыл бұрын
@@darrentaylor4707 Unless the player is spec'd to playback 4k video, you'll struggle. And remember the bit-rate too. If you're recording at 100 mb/s, you will really struggle as that's upping the processing requirements even more. Your best bet is to chuck a small clip of it onto your phone if it's a higher end phone. Most phones like the Samsung S6 onwards and recent I-phones can handle 4k very well. Main thing is to test if the issue is on the video itself, or the playback device. Cheers, Ian

Is hand catching and turning to side to immediately stop the rotors considered dangerous? Maybe this technique puts some strain on the drone?
@IaninLondon

I wouldn't use that method personally as the left stick down command works fine without twisting the orientation of the drone; I reckon it would put some strain on the props.... Ian

@IaninLondon

Landing Protection is actually quite useful and helps with the props being shut down when it senses it's no longer flying. But yes, disabling landing protection would make it a land a bit quicker and easier on your hand. Ian

@Onbekommerd 5 жыл бұрын
You said you cannot land on the table. Why would that be a problem?
@IaninLondon
@IaninLondon 5 жыл бұрын
The Mavic 2 Pro doesn't have precision landing and the landing protection stops the landing as it's surrounded by fence and bushes saying it's unsuitable. But if it's a large wooden table (not metal) out in the open, it would land fine. 👍🏻
@Onbekommerd
@Onbekommerd 5 жыл бұрын
OK, thanks that makes it clear. I have a Mavic Air, which has precision landing but I usually land it manually anyway and on a table (which I have never done) would help avoiding debris.
