Harvesting potatoes is so much fun! This video is two years old….it’s June 2023 now. Last year was my first time and I grew in four 5 gallon buckets. Oh man…I couldn’t believe how many potatoes I got! They were delicious. I giggled and laughed out loud when I saw potatoes in the dirt!! Like I said, it was my first time ever growing potatoes….how fun it is!!

I dig them up when I'm ready to eat them. After Thanksgiving Day, I dig up the rest. This way my potatoes last twice as long. My Grandaughter had the genius idea of leaving the tiny ones in the ground. They come up and start growing in May and that's a sign for me to start chitting what few potatoes I have left from the previous year.

This was my first year of planting potatoes. I’m at Wisconsin zone 5B. I planted a small bed of russet potatoes and another small bed, of purple majesty potatoes. Both pretty small cause I didn’t really know what I was doing. I wanted to try it out. The russet potatoes got planted earlier, foliage died back and I harvested them today. I am really impressed with harvest. I haven’t had a chance to weigh them yet but it looks great. God has really blessed me with bountiful harvest. Praise God.

A very nice Video, nothing weird and to the point. I've been growing my own for 2 decades and haven't purchased a potato in over 15. One thing to consider when you sized the potatoes is to flame the tops so all vines die and it will also destroy any pathogens. Then after 2 to 3 weeks later dig them. Killing the vines start dormancy and waiting a few weeks before digging will let the potatoes set thick skin in the ground. I harvested last week and still have good potatoes in storage I can still use, and setting skin makes a big difference in storage. Commercial growers spray or flame to kill vines prior to harvesting and where I learned this.

Me too! Well I didn’t experiment and put one potato into a cardboard box and just put compost and a little bit of warm castings. Just to see what would happen. My box is full and beautiful, but other channel said to cut off the flowering buds to let more energy go into the potatoes. So I did that. I plan on harvesting this in middle of July or beginning of August. It was just an experiment if all goes well I will be doing many more next year!!!!

@lilolmecj 3 жыл бұрын
@@coltykuu potatoes are very easy to grow in the Pacific Northwest. You can plant quite early, every year I find a handful of volunteer potatoes no matter how carefully I try to harvest. Normally I will plant either seed potatoes from the farm supply, or sprouty ones from the store, as soon as I see a volunteer one up. They are not picky about soil types except damp soil that doesn’t drain well. Don’t fertilize, they will just make bigger plants. Their plants are fairly large, so allow for a 2 foot diameter.

Hi from Nottingham UK 🙋😊. Realy enjoyed your video ! I've been growing potatoes over 50yrs now and still get excited lifting my first new potatoes each year . Nothing beats the beautiful earthy taste of fresh dug spuds . I'd urge everyone to try different varieties too and taste the difference ! I grew 24 different varieties a few years back , although only 4 tubers of each , as a 'taste/usage ( boil, roast , mash , jacket )' experiment . Great fun ! . A question I'd like to ask please , Do you save your own seed every year ? I save mine for one year , but buy new Scottish seed potatoes for the following year , then save again . Be interested to know your thoughts/practice . Happy growing and all hail the awesome potato !!! 🍻

I need to branch out more though apparently, we only have 4 varieties this year! 😆

Just found this video, fantastic looking tatties there, I grow mine in huge tubs, just as you say, leave till plant is dying off then lift, or in my case, tip the tubs over and reap the rewards. Kind regards from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Johnny

Cooking my first batch of garden raised Yukon Golds with lunch today. I’m so excited! People told me it was too hot here in Texas to grow them. Five more bags to harvest.
