Welcome to NoobAquatics, today we are hatching Medaka Rice Fish eggs that we received in the mail directly from Japan. These eggs are from a rare color variant called Himitu heiki (aka Secret Weapon) Japanese Medaka Rice Fish (Oryzias Latipes). We ordered a total of 30 eggs and received 34 eggs and an already hatched fry. Out of the 34 eggs, 2 were very white and never hatched from the beginning. For the remaining 32 eggs, we were able to hatch a total of 28 Rice Fish. One of these babies were a little deformed, and I am pretty sure that it will not survive. So, our success rate at hatching these eggs is 27 out of 32. This is an 84% hatch rate, which is awesome.
The supplies you will need to be successful in hatching these beautiful eggs:
• Medaka Eggs
• ½ gallon container that is completely disinfected (we use a clear Tupperware container that has marks at 16 oz. and 32 oz.)
• Clean water, preferably water that is already mineralized (our water is remineralized out of the tap using a special water filter that includes Calcium, Magnesium, etc., with a clean TDS of 120) and stored at room temperature (between 70 - 75 F)
• Clean and disinfected Pipettes
• 2-3 feet of standard airline tubing for siphoning water out of the containers
• Sink or container to catch the dirty water
• Small container or lid for acclimating the eggs/fry
• No air needed in the hatching process
• Methylene Blue (we use Kordon Methylene Blue)
• Drip acclimator of some kind (we have a video on how to make a DIY drip acclimator)
• Thermometer (we use a regular, non-digital thermometer)
• Toothpicks (these are used to add in the Methylene Blue, easiest method)
The container will need to be stored in a location that is warm, around 75 degrees F or 23.8 Celsius, and has light that can hit the container for at least 10 hours a day. We have found that the eggs for some reason were only hatching when the lights were on, which is very interesting. Follow along on the video as we walk you through the entire process of hatching these eggs to the free-swimming stage.
Medaka Rice Fish hatch at a 250-degree Celsius total, so if your water temperature is at 23 degrees C, then you take 250 divided by 23 and that number is the total number of days your eggs will take to hatch. Yes, if the water is warmer, they will hatch quicker, but this can also shorten the lifespan of your fish. So, keep you water between 70 - 75 degrees F, or 21 - 24 C, for the best hatching time that is healthier for your new Medaka eggs.

When watching a Medaka baby hatched out in a small bottle, I remember the Space Medaka, 4 Medakas had a 15days space flight for gravity experiment by Space shuttle Columbia in 1994, they were the first vertebrate spawned eggs and the eggs hatched out in the space flight. The descendants are living in japan. Thanks for the detailed step by step video.

Nice, yeah so far after close to a month we have only had a few that didn't make it. There were a few fish that were solid black, and just didn't seem to get any bigger, those little ones have not made it. But, at the moment I can still count about 20+ that are strong and kickin.

@@NoobAquatics I've had 'failure to thrive' individual fry both in eggs I've bought and from my own fish, I guess some just aren't meant to survive. So far it looks like over 90% hatching rate of the Japanese eggs

I had three platinum rice fish in a tote with some water hyacinth. I moved the rice fish to a larger pond I have and left the tote with hyacinth on the deck. Being lazy I didn't empty the tote when I removed the fish. Three weeks later I looked and have a good 100 rice fish fry and I wasn't trying to raise any. So hatching rice fish is apparently not that complicated.

You are correct, in good water parameters, and as long as you are not receiving them in the mail. Rice fish are pretty hardy and easy to breed. Some of the more rare color variants can be a little more difficult though.

It's really not complicated at all. They sell these for penny's n Japan as feeder fish cause they are so easy to reproduce.....

Can I ask what's in your grow out tank? Substrate, plants ect ..
@NoobAquatics
@NoobAquatics Жыл бұрын
Yes, for the 2.5 gallon grow out the bottom layer of the substrate is 1 inch of Organic potting mix/dirt, we have a 1.5 inch cap of sand on top of that, the plants are a fast growing Pearl Weed, a slower growing small Amazon Sword plant, a small clump of Java Moss, a small amount of California Black worms to help with left over food that the fry don't eat. I also have 2 small pieces of almond leaves about a 1 inch by 1 inch square. These leaves help to encourage infusoria growth and provide a small food source for the blackworms, and every now and then I drop in a really small wafer to feed the blackworms, just in case they are not getting enough food leftovers. We use a cheap LED plant light we got off of Amazon for the plants. And finally we have a Nano sponge filter that is turned way down low on the air power so that the fry are now beat all over the place with bubbles.

Was there any trouble or special fees getting them? Am also thinking about getting some and wondering what to expect.
@NoobAquatics
@NoobAquatics Жыл бұрын
There were definitely fees, we used a transhipper, and the cost was paid directly to them. Then the transhipper sent all the products (fish&eggs) to our home using DHL. I do know that there are some places/people on eBay that sell eggs, not sure if there are any customs fees or not. But from what I see on their postings it looks like there might be.

What's up brother. I was looking for a place to message you but instead i guess ill just leave this here because the info is important. After watching this video showing you receiving eggs from killifish breeder Japan and I just wanted to warn you that he's under investigation by The Fish and wildlife commission here in the states. They've been cracking down on people that have been ordering from him on eBay because technically what he's doing is illegally importing. He marks the import paperwork as "liquid fish food" then sends them along with actual fish food so no one ever 2nd guesses. This forces his customers to illegally import without their knowledge. People have been getting in trouble for this more and more and it's really hurting our community. EVERYTHING he sells is under fake importation paperwork and I personally know of 6 people who have been fined by fsw. Each time seemed to be after posting about him on social media or just online in general. I can't tell anyone what to do at all but I thought I'd give you a little friendly warning just so something doesn't happen. No one wants to deal with the feds haha again sorry man just thought I'd give you the heads up 🤙

I do not focus my video on where I bought them from, it is only about hatching the eggs if you happen to receive them in the mail. I never mention from what site or other location that I may have bought them from. But it is always good to know information, and thank you for the heads up, I'll stay away from this Killifish site or seller you are talking about.

So if you bought said eggs and decided to sell the fish online it would be illegal then?
@the.medaka.lair.
@the.medaka.lair. 10 ай бұрын
@@Legio_XII I guess technically no since they were bred here but if we wanted to be fully honest with customers about our sources then it becomes kind of shady. My question is if you buy those eggs how do you know what you've raised is true to the strain?How can you offer something for sale if you don't even know what that strain properly looks like to do all the corrections and culling? And if you raise the eggs and immediately start selling them how do you know if the strain is strong and will bred true enough to even offer for sale? Myself as well as several other US breeders I know keep track of the varieties he offers to be able to note them once they try and get offered on the US market. Folks deserve to know sources and if that source is some kind of gray market hopefully they make the right choice.
