☆DISCLAIMER FOR ALL THE BITTER HEAT PAD/TAPE LOYALISTS!☆ ⬇️⬇️⬇️ I could have put the heat pad/ tape underneath the reptile enclosure, BUT wood is an excellent insulator. In the past I have placed a heat pad underneath a wood reptile enclosure and it does NOT penetrate the heat through. This video was to show how heat pads and tape are NOT appropriate for a reptile enclosure made out of WOOD. The truth is critics will ALWAYS have something to say. If I put the heat pad/ tape UNDERNEATH, people would rudly point it out. If I put the heat pad/ tape INSIDE people would rudely point it out as well. I could do 1000 things right and 1 thing wrong and the critics would attack me on that single thing instead of actually being GRATEFULL that I took hours, time and thought to put a video like this together. I've been waiting forever for this video! I just recently purchased a radiant heat panel for my ball python and from your review I see no cons. Yes, it's more expensive but it lasts 20x's more than a heat bulb so in the end you arent really spending any more money. Also, buying an extra bulb for lighting is a must in my opinion to help mimic the sun. So a strong LED is great and they typically last a very long time as well. The heat pad from what I have read should be able to have air flow thats why they are supposed to be used under a glass tank and the tank is supposed to be raised slightly with the plastic pieces they supply. Caulking it or putting it under glass would potentially cause a fire. Another idea for your customers could be to purchase two tiles and sandwich the heat pad in between them with thicker rubber bumpers (the things you use so cabinets dont slam) 😂. Allowing airflow even with substrate and making a nice warm area. Thank you for your time putting together this very informational video. 🤗

i have used heat pads in the past but never on anything other than a glass enclosure. they do a good job as a secondary heat source for reptiles living in glass tanks but i dont think id ever use them on any other type of enclosure.

I use a radiant heat panel for keeping the ambient temp of my 4x2x2 enclosure around 85F and an under tank heater for 88F belly heat for a ball python. I think a proper combination of any of these, depending on the reptile, and with use of a proper thermostat, is the best idea. That being said, I think a radiant heat panel is a must for any large enclosure that needs a basking spot.

I would say use more than one method in each enclosure if possible. In smaller enclosures it would be difficult, but as a snake keeper for the last 16 years I'm still working towards better ways of husbandry methods. Keep up the good work.

Problem with the bulbs is when the light goes out (for night time) it gets to cold in my tank. Have to now have another source of heat for night and the pads just don't cut it. The heating panel I think is the best for a larger set up

It was a great rest that no one else covered. I'm just disappointed that you never properly installed the heat pad/tap as that is not how it would go if there was a reptile in the tank. By doing that it took away that validity of the end result of how effective heat tape/pads are in wooden enclosures. Other then that great video and I'm glad you actually conducted the test instead of just talking about it.

Radiant heat panels are more expensive but in my opinion the way to go. I’ve noticed that my ball pythons are way more active. Also they last forever so you only have to buy it once so long as you follow the instructions. If you’re worried about lightning I go with LED strip lights.

where did you get the heat panel from

The wooden enclosure I build with the 1/2 inch ply wood I happened to have on hand at the house finished with the dimensions of L 40" x W 28" x H 36" I had planned on using a heat mat under neath with a ceramic heat amateur sitting on top on the screen cover I build into the top and also a light source of some kind that's on the dimmer side . Can you give me your honest input on what would be my best route of options and way to to one the methods I listed above and of course I have 2 thermastats already purchased and on hand...and the enclosure was build to house a ball python... Side note I absolutely love your channel and videos you put out great job..I look forward to hopefully hearing back from you and your input on my best methods to use in the enclosure..

I am curious why even high-end thermostats are simple on/off controllers, instead of PID. Do you have any good reason why to use a cyclic controller as opposed to a PID controller, which will essentially keep the most even amount of heat?

If your Heat bulb is on a day/night timer, how is the tank getting heat if the bulb is off for half the day?

If you use the polyurethane do you need to also use silicone to seal up the corners? I don’t see much on that

Mate sorry but no- absolutely no - for a start vents are meant to be placed on either the back wall high and low either side or on the sides of the viv with the high vents on the hot side with the lower on the cool- this is essential! It creates the correct air flow and thermal gradient you need, you really need to borrow or use a thermal camera to see how the air circulates inside a viv as you clearly aren’t really aware - I’ve also tested many enclosures of different sizes with a misting machine to have a clear visual clue as to how the air flow is moving - one midway on the back is practically useless and it would be a terrible idea in a bioactive viv setup and you’d get mould and all sorts as a result of poor flow- there’s a couple of vids on the research behind what I’ve said available- I’ve been a reptile/snake especially keeper 35 years and have built many vivs in the uk of varying sizes from the smallest 2fts to 8-15ft ones and correct ventilation placement and size is really important- people have misconceptions on vent placement and size from watching vids like this and with elements in them that go unchallenged and that’s not right - I like your vids but please present correct info and educate people - I say this from years of trial and error and as I said before get a loan of or buy whatever a thermal camera and see how bad your airflow is and your thermal gradient

I had my heat tape in my terrarium, it almost got on fire because the animal pooped and pied on the place where the electric is fixed on the heat tape. Will never do it again in the terrarium and I will never advise it. So be careful!!!!!!

Heat tape works perfect under enclosure with probe placed on top of the hot spot and works perfectly from top to bottom heat with ambient being perfect as well and humidity is above 50 as well I have 80-82 for ambient and hot end at 90- 92 never put heat tape or pads in the enclosure that’s not a good idea you will burn your reptile

Stomach heat helps with digestion. Give the animal the option.

Yeah, those little humidity gauges, you’d get a better reading by simply licking the air in the enclosure. Those gauges are usually found at big pet stores and are absolute rubbish, never buy them… EVER!

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say the heat tape and pad are made for glass enclosures.......

Sorry but this is a poorly executed experiment. Top enclosure will have been affected by the bottom enclosure. And heat tape and pads are not meant to be inside the enclosure.
