Great video! I’m lucky to have a beautiful goat willow in my front garden, it’s about 12 foot tall. It’s pruned each August to keep it manageable. I absolutely love it because of all the insects it attracts. The branches are closely knitted together now with years of pruning, perfect for the birds to nest in.

Salix caprea, an excellent early nectar source as you say, but also the larval foodplant of the Purple Emperor, if you are lucky enough to have those flying around your garden, these Goat Willows are really easy to get going from cuttings, so it is easy to plant whole rows of them once you have the first tree growing, I also stick them in the local hedgerows rather than throwing away the trimmings, but they do not do well in my garden as it is far too dry. Stay safe! Chris B.

Yes - agreed, I "caught" my other half sticking some random willow cuttings into the ground I'd just cleared after I'd trimmed the willow over the river in France! ;) One of the easiest cuttings to grow, and absolutely re the Purple Emperor, although they do have rather unsavoury tastes once they reach butterfly-hood! Here up North (where it’s grim),the goal willow isn’t nearly flowing. However I have a few crack willows which flower much earlier. And the bees love them. I grew them from pencil thin metre long cuttings.I’m sure goat willow can be propagated in a similar fashion,at no cost (if you can find a tree locally). Wouldn’t recommend crack willow for a small garden though, tend to grow fast and fall over.

I bought a Salix Caprea Kilmarnock last year and planted it in a tub on my patio but in the Summer it was infested with aphids. It’s covered in catkins at the moment but want to get ahead of the game. I know Ladybirds are great predators but I haven’t seen a ladybird in ages. I decided I want to grow mostly wild flowers in my pots this year to attract the pollinators.
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there - there certainly seem to be less ladybirds in recent years, I don't know if that's scientifically correct but I have noticed it too. The Salix will be such an important source of nectar for bees etc - I am not sure of the space you have but you could try to move the pot further away from the house, hopefully then birds will take advantage of it - they need as much "soft" and "moist" food for chicks in Spring as possible, so these aphids will help :) I'm here if you need any other advice etc, best wishes - Joel

Good one, think goat willow has separate male and female plants, think yellow flowered ones are the male trees. Have had one in my garden for about 12 years. Pollard it after flowering every one or two year so it doesn’t outgrow the space.
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Spencer - you're absolutely right :) They're known as dioecious, male trees have the grey, oval flowers which turn more yellow when in pollen, and the females are longer flowered and more green. So glad you have one of these and and know how to keep them in check, over they years I've seen so many ripped out because people have the view that they are just rampant - which of course they are, as they're quick growing but can be easily managed, as you've proven :) Best wishes, Joel

Wow, I know they're capable of growing around 9ft per year and do easily re-produce - I understand they're even more of a problem in Tasmania and have done a lot of "damage" - no doubt introduced, humans are usually behind any imbalance in nature. Absolutely :) This is liked by many pollinators, including bees, plus it rarely grows above 3m I believe. Yes, the one behind me in the video is certainly a rather large handsome specimen, wish we saw more like these in the "wild" - but do go for Mount Aso (Salix chaenomeloides) as it will benefit a lot of creatures - hope that helps - best wishes to you and yours, Joel

Brilliant:) thankyou I will definitely infest in one! I’m a postie & glad to say whilst delivering today I noticed a lot of these trees (about half the size) in peoples gardens, I never realised how important these beautiful trees are

@@rimirimi32 That's so wonderful to read :) I am so glad that the channel is making a difference and people are doing their bit and absolutely thrilled that you get to see these already in people's gardens - it's amazing once you get close enough to trees to see how beautiful their individual flowers are, almost invisible until you look :) Take good care and good like with the Mount Aso - you certainly will be rewarded - best wishes, Joel

Salix purpurea, it's a native european willow that naturally grows as a bush.

Or Eared Willow could be a good choice, as it's native (grows in the north of Britain) and a bush rather than a tree. Even Grey Willow could be an option for some gardens - smaller and more shrubby than Goat Willow but bigger than Eared Willow. I'd always stick to native species, rather than introducing more non-natives that could then invade our woodlands. Our native ecosystems are beleaguered enough as it is with all the invasive non-native trees and shrubs that gardeners keep planting ...

Hi there, wasps will try to raid honeybee nests for the honey etc and sometimes kill the bees, it is all part of nature though and these creatures have lived side by side for millennia - although I appreciate of course that it isn't nice to think about in depth. But don't let this discourage you from making a space for nature in your own garden or green space. Very best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton thanks for speaking out your opinion! I have bunch of bumble bees in the garden. Then the wasps came and set their nests in a bird house. I took it out last year. And this year they put 3 nests in that same birdhouse. I believe their larvae are in it too. On the other side of the garden about 15 feet away, I saw the bee hotel has more than 10 holes sealed. I started to worry about if the wasps will attack bees. But I don't think these are honey bees.

I own a Salix cinerea, and its starting to flower around this time. In the summer its attracting a lot of Aphids (counted at least 5 species) - and that's when also the Ladybug's come to breed on the tree. Last summer we had so many different types and colours!! At the end of the season, every little aphid was eaten. The sugar from the aphids also attracts a lot of other bugs, flies and even wasps. Sadly my neighbor wants to see the small tree gone; she thinks its ugly and keeps on ripping branches out of it if she gets the chance (seen her do this a couple of times already when they hang over the fence). This year I have to cut some of it back, and im already sad about it because im destroying this unique mini ecosystem... Even the birds love to hang around there and find a lot of food for their young in it. I tried to talk to this woman so often about this issue but she never wanted to change her mind. She only likes the stuff that blooms and smells nice. Of course the tree will grow back, but before it gets as pretty as it is now, years will pass again.. sigh..

So sorry to hear this - really I am. I have had similar experiences with neighbours, it only makes me more determined to ensure my garden makes up for the adjacent losses. There are many gardeners that want their "patch" just for their own benefit of course and that's their choice, but they're missing out on a lot of free visitors that are just as beautiful :) Best wishes, Joel
