Thank you. I can hit pretty good flat and kick serves but not slice. When I saw your comparison with the forehand volée i understood i little bit more. I'm really bad at net so it's a long way. Start practicing this already today to give my game more diversity and take my opponents by surprise. This year I reached my best (National) rank and I want to improve again to make it to the top 10% of my Country.

In the old days they made the ball turn back, from the bounce of a slice serve. So for a rh player, the slice curves to the left, and when bouncing, it kicks back to the right. This particular serve was used to hit to the T-area, making the ball enter the left side of the T, yet ending on the right side of the T. I think it was especially McEnroe, G Villas and Gerulaitis who used this as well as Borg. The spin on the ball is reverse to the flight / curve - the curve is produced due to the law of more distance / resistence air is required to travel, that direction an object will move, like the wing design on an airplane. As the distance over the wing is longer and air thus has to travel longer than the opposite air under the wing, the plane gathers lift. Likewise turning the far half of the ball to rotate, the resistence and thus time for air to travel across on that side is increased, making the ball go to the side of the shorter air path, as the air on longer path pushes the object towards where less air is being displaced, due to the spin applied. Yet on impact with the court surface, if not all spin has been brushed of during flight through the air, the remaing spin is still in the direction on the further half, thus to the right. That type of slice serve produces also more kick bounce from the topspin, whereas the cut slice, due to more backspin drag, will reduce its bounce height

For slice serves, there are two types: (1) side spin plus under spin (without pronation, amateur) and (2) side spin plus top spin (with pronation, pro).

3:49 i was at first like "holy crap! They played Federer on Grandstand at the US Open???" But then I looked closer at the crowd - ... yep, this was just a practice match he played at the USO. :D (He probably played a practice MATCH for the grounds pass ticket holders; that is how cool he is - and how much he loves to play for a crowd). ... anyways, I love that you showed this, rather than a "prime time" match of his. That is a very cool court, by the way; it always reminds me of being on the freeway!! just outside of the court, trying to crawl off to the exit for Flushing Meadows. (The outside wall of the court is practically a wall of the freeway! Lol).

Good lesson. The clock face method is the best. 8-2 o'clock is my bread&butter serve. Versatile, has curve as well as power opposed to hitting 3 o'clock. Placed well curves across the receiver's body producing a weak return. A 1 o'clock also curves then kicks off the court from the middle of the service box sideline. Are you in SoCal?

What is the correction for excessive ulnar deviation of the wrist, dominating the follow through and not allowing pronation, as a result of focusing on the motion of swinging the racket on edge or chopping the ball with the racket edge?

Love your content and good video ... but ... I've played just maybe three people in my 50 years of tennis that could slice using pronation. The best slice servers I've played all used the "doff the hat to the queen" motion accelerating the racquet around and under the ball and ending with the body in a bowing position and the racquet face pointing up.

I have a question. If a slice serve is easier when you toss a bit to the right but you’re worried about disguising it, can you develop a flat serve with the same toss instead of the other way around?

Hey Bro ! Amazing video. Just one technical question. For right handlers, that makes it 4 o clock to 11 o clock swing motion and not 8 o clock to 2 o clock as mentioned ya ? Insanely amazing content, just want to clarify this as my understanding is contact at around 3,4 o clock and swing towards 11 o clock in right handed slice servers :)

Great video. When I slice, my racket is more vertical than my flat serve. But the rest is exactly the same. Also, the squash shot is more like Fed's slice serve because there is pronation on the finish. This is why the squash shot has a lot of pace on it, more so than your demonstration forehand slice. Please release your Fed serve video earlier. Thanks.
