ABOUT
I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! Be sure to subscribe. In 2023 my goal is to upload once a month.
Video's you can find here that I enjoy creating include;
+ homestead & homeschool vlogs

Love this. I'm a teacher in a multi-age classroom, and we use many of these tips with great success. We also pull children from the younger multi-age classroom for the same benefits that it provides for everyone. I'm on here because I like to homeschool my kids in the summer, and I have a wild toddler. Even with all my multi-age experience, trying to teach with the toddler has never been part of it.

For reference-I've been homeschooling about 10 years now, and I was a public school teacher 8 years before that. When my children and I began homeschooling, I had a newborn, and we've been through seasons that almost always have toddlers and newborns in the mix, along with being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Sleep, what's that? 🤪 I'm expecting a baby in March, so this is timely. Much of your suggestions, I've implemented, many having learned the hard way and with much distress because my success wasn't comparable to that I had as a public school teacher. My favorite suggestion you've given that I'm going to try my best to implement this school year is guarding the homeschool day. I've not done this consistently, and I'm hoping it will be fruitful for us this year. On those homeschool days, when we need to get to appointments, I often shift the school week to include Saturday. We also take a big chunk of time off when the baby is due and the first couple weeks after birth. This season of life is hard, I agree, but I think the stress is highest for everyone when illness hits the family. It's the vicious cycle in a large family to have each kid get a virus and be at different stages of illness, being sick yourself and the whole routine of life dashed. Sleep, chores, the Homestead, and the homeschool suffer tremendously. That is hands down the least desired, most dreaded time. Thanks for sharing!

you are wonderful. I do not feel judged watching your channel - I feel understood. You are very realistic about what a regular person can actually do in a day. I have found it frustrating when everyone says to moms "wake up early and start your day before your children" that would make it so that I would have zero sleep if I did that. It's just not realistic for moms in the baby stage. anyways rant over, appreciate your channel and your way of relating what you do, in a kind, accepting, realistic "been-there' manner.

“Guard your hours” is so true and essential. I teach online from home and TOTALLY agree with others thinking “oh she is home so she has so much time to do such and such”. Even though I am teaching or grading for 8 hours a day. I constantly have to tell people that I’m busy and will get back to them… and they are a bit shocked. But so important that your time and space are respected.

Thanks for sharing, we often do 'couch school' and everyone snuggles up on the couches and blankeys to get school work done while I'm pregnant or feeding a baby.

Also remember there are a lot of tutoring resources if you need them, so don’t feel you need to be able to do all of it yourself.

Thank you! Best "homeschooling with a baby" video I've watched so far. I have a baby, a 6 year old and two autistic teens. Boy do we have a time together! I like your video but you went so fast and I didn't understand all of your tips.

When I started homeschooling my first, my second was a baby and it went well! Not too easy, but we did it! My baby was learning while I was teaching his older brother. I am hoping that my older sons will help me teach my baby as he grows, since they'll be in their 20s and 30s when he is still in school (which is crazy to think about)! That is a good idea about recording yourself and using flashcards and such.

I’ve been homeschooling for 4 years now and we’ve been trying different methods and seeing what works and what doesn’t. So far we’ve found our niche I think. But I’m curious do you still follow the public schools requirements as far as credits needed or classes they prefer to see for a diploma or do you do the basics only and then throw in each child’s personal skills and desires for their interests?? I’m having a 9th grader this year and kind of having a confusing time figuring out how to do credits and produce a transcript??? I’d like the opinion and outlook from someone who’s on the same way of life I’d like to get to at some point…. 🙂
