Just an FYI, I am not a mechanic so forgive my terminology. I'm just a do it yourselfer finding a cheap and effective way to do things while sharing it with the world. This video is for demonstration purposes and anything you do is at your own risk.

So many comments from people that never did enough engines. Cast rings are very forgiving. My grandma could hone a cylinder and it would turn out just fine with cast rings. When you build a bomber race cheap claimer engine, you want everything loose. Now if you are building a high mileage engine you want 250,000 miles out of it, it's put together completely different.

This is where all the power is in the engine. We are talking hundreds of horsepower! Very few people understand how to get this easy horsepower. Needless to say, keep your cylinder walls straight. The easiest way is to take a piston turn it upside down in a bore with the rod and measure the piston to wall clearance at the top middle and bottom with a long truck Diesel feeler gauge. Another big factor is how course or smooth the stones are and the amount of clearance that’s best for your application. This is one of the best kept secrets in engine building.

Dont listen to the nay sayers. Some of these people forget that the entire point is to do this on a budget, not perfection. It wont be perfect but the whole point of honing is to create a rough surface so the rings and the walls grind themselves perfect in due time and use. Good work for 20 bucks.

Bro.... rule number one when honing... ALWAYS USE A LUBRICANT!! That’s with any form of machining
@ronmckean2909
@ronmckean2909 4 жыл бұрын
In the shop, when turning or milling cast iron, it is self lubricating. That is what I have been taught. Thats machining. This is using stones. Stones are not machining. (Not counting grinders)

@kevindiy8169

@ Rholdan Yabut- It depends on the pistons in the motor. Mine were previously oversized .030. So I had to go with rings that would fit that piston. I do not believe that honing the cylinders would require a larger ring.

Set diesels up dry in the cylinders, put it together fast and crank it up. The rings will set in less than a minute.

You need to run the drill clockwise and then counter clockwise to get a good crosshatch, also a few seconds each way usually does the trick, just trying to take the mirror shine out of cylinder.

Going way too fast to get a good crosshatch and stopping it in the bore leaves vertical lines on the walls when you pull it out. How'd the engine turn out?

DIY guys can call this whatever they want. No engine machinist is going to call this a hone job. This is nothing more than deglazing. A hone job removes material and straightens bores. This does not.

@kevindiy8169
@kevindiy8169 6 жыл бұрын
@ Marcus- Honing your cylinders does not remove nearly enough material to go up in ring size. You would have to get your cylinders reamed by a machine shop to require an upsize in rings. I would stick with the same sized ring that was in it previously. I hope this helps.

Ball hone is the best.
@bryangillis5183
@bryangillis5183 Жыл бұрын
Ball hone isn’t best at all. Ball hone will hide defects in the cylinder wall that a flat stone will reveal. The only time to use a ball hone is when you know 100% sure after measuring your cylinder walls are straight and don’t have waves in them or big gouges. A flat stone hone is the best tool for home use although his technique is wrong. The up and down motion should be faster as well as the rpm. Watch any hone machine in a machine shop and you’ll see the difference.
