I agree with you about form of style it's just a form a style of art how you roll the ball, and i don't know why it becomes a debate in the past about two handed style, is't because of rev rate that applice on the 2 hand style. In my observation in the sport itself it doesn't matter how good or angry you throw the bowling ball as long you get a good ball transition and that's fine and that's it.

when i picked up bowling a little more competitively, i immediately went to two handed, because my wrist wasn't strong enough anymore to support a ball due to a tennis injury. While i still have some slight pains, it's much better than me trying a one-handed approach. I'm glad it's becoming a more popular thing, and the insight you guys gave was wonderful.

I've bowled one handed my whole life. I started taking bowling seriously May 2021. I struggled to have a high speed and rev rate. I also struggled hitting 200 for 7 months bowling 1 handed. I tried the 2 handed style for a joke one night and found it strange but wanted to get better. So, I stuck with it ever since. My ball speed went up almost instantly and it took me 3 days to break 200. I'm now a committed 2 handed bowler with a 504 rev rate, 15.5-16.5 ball speed, and I enjoy playing straighter angles. It's so cool to see my game progress since I started.

I have carpal tunnel and have issues with my wrist. Bowling 1 handed kept triggering something in my wrist that made my whole arm numb. Decided to try 2 handed to relieve some of those issues and it has done WONDERS. Already back to my one handed average and probably slightly better after only 2 months. Now just dealing with back and leg pains, I am getting old, stretching is a must.

Funny thing is that I didn't go 2 handed cuz of belmo or simo. Started throwing it like TD and then was struggling with balance and stability and saw all the 2 handers and was like oh! Now I got 2 hands to keep it stable :D. I don't have a ton of revs and I do enjoy having a medium rev rate instead to control it a bit more and focus on trying to be consistent. Especially trying to be more elbow in style release.

I never thought it would grow this much I gained motivation back then by all the older bowlers saying you aren't gonna get anywhere bowling that way and all the haters criticizing the 2 handed style and it being unique at the time we don't have that extra motivation now with as fast as it's grown like it has

I have been bowling since 1979. Back then the balls barely hooked and we had to make sure not to throw the ball too hard or it wouldn't get to the pocket. The benefit of two-handed bowling is you can generate a lot more power than one-handed bowlers. In the old days two-handed bowling would have only produced straight balls. By the mid 1990s strong balls became available and wood lanes were replaced with superior synthetic lanes. That introduced modern power bowling where you had to throw it hard so it wouldn't hook too much. At that point two-handed bowling became possible and advantageous. Today's bowling, like football, respects power - so using two hands is definitely an advantage. But bowling is also a game that demands accuracy and repeatability, which is harder to achieve if you have loads of revs. So it still mostly comes down to experience and the bowler's ability to calculate and execute so their shot hits correctly. That means if you are a young person starting bowling, then you should learn two-handed bowling, just like you would learn snowboarding instead of skiing (because it isn't cool). But if you are a one-handed bowler with years of experience, then that is fine. You won't become more competitive giving up that experience. In my younger days I would like beating lefties and in PBA matches I would root for the righty (except Mr. Anthony). But now that there are three forms, righty, lefty, and two-handed, I don't care which hand anymore.

i started to bowl 2 handed when i was 13, even though i have back injury, i just ignore it because back then, i just played bowling as a hobby. Now that i am 22, i want to start getting serious about bowling, got my buddy to go to the bowling centre once a week to bowl. The thing is my back couldn’t stand the pressure of bowling 2 handed and it is hard to maintain focus, accuracy and basically everything when i play like 6 games in one time, my back hurts so much every time. I’m thinking of switching back to one hand as i figure one hand uses less spine tilt than 2 hands BUT it is super hard when you are are already comfortable and start to get the rhythm with 2 hands. I find it hard to get my hand behind the ball my hand is always on top of the ball causing it to hook a little or no hook at all. nonetheless, there is still a lot of work to be done and i’m excited because one hand bowling is pretty new to me and i love learning new things. wish me luck 💪
@angrybadger4236
@angrybadger4236 2 жыл бұрын
If you watch the older a bowler gets the less tilt they have regardless of style. Even belmo is more upright than he was eight years ago. If it's not sustainable it's not good because bowling is all about repeatability. Simo basically lays on his stomach when he throws so it will be interesting to see if he has to back off a bit. Can't be dragging your beard over the foul line every shot.

So I'm a 1 hander and I have absolutely no problem with 2 handers. But every video I watch always talks about nothing but the pros of two handed bowling. People glorify it. But they fail to talk about the cons. I'm actually interested in becoming a coach and I'm in the process so I have a ball that I specifically use to practice 2 handed because I know I will have to coach 2 handers. But as a 1 hander I am terrible at it. I want to know what I'm talking about and in theory I know how to do it but practically I don't. So I think people need to know about the hardships that come with bowling two handed too. Your swing plane changes..your footwork changes your mental game even changes.. people need to hear about that aspect as well.. Just a personal take though.

As someone who is going from the traditional style to 2 handed bowling I can agree with you 100 percent. It's taken me months to break habits I've formed with 30 years of bowling traditionally. The hardest thing for me was my approach. I think I'm on my 10th revision now. One thing I haven't changed yet... my thumb is still in the ball. I understand that it's uncommon but I know what I need to do at the bottom with my hand. I was a 450+ rpm guy throwing 18-20 mph but I tore my shoulder up pretty good at work a few years ago and starting having issues at the end of last season. It did require me to change pitches and go back to grips as I hate throwing with plug material on my fingers. Will have to play around with different layouts as well as my standard pin up rolls dangerously close to my thumb now too.

I think a big part of it is kids keep with bowling while they are at a young age because they can do it 2 handed even if they are smaller. This means a deeper pool of upcoming talent through the youth ranks and what really makes an athlete great isn't the physical skill, it's the mind and the competitive drive. The more kids you have participating in a sport the greater the talent at the professional level will be. As an adult bowler for me I learned how to hook the ball with no thumb one handed and the transitioned to using my thumb as I got used to hooking it and rolling the ball. I can carry a 190+ league average without having to practice. I'm out to have fun and compete with myself so I am happy with my one handed and wouldn't switch now but if I knew about two handed when I started 20 years ago then I probably would be doing it now.

Just got into bowling 2 months ago, tried going one handed for a good while but I could never get it right and my thumb kept having the skin ripped off of it. Switched to two handed after seeing another guy down the alley throwing that style and I still had a game or two left to bowl. I found it more comfortable, however as you said it's all up to the person. Some days I'll see tons of two handers in the alley, and other days it'll only be me.

Thanks for sharing. I love your insight. The only thing you didn't mention is the wear and tear your thumb suffers during each tournament. A 2 handed bowler's thumb remains out of harms way. In my case. I damaged my thumb and now the first joint is fused. As a result, it is nearly impossible to release my traditional finger tip drilled ball and no pro has been able to drill a new ball that I can release with my thumb used. So I was forced to switch to 2 handed and slowly but surely my average is almost back to my pre-injury level. Thanks again!

@@freighttrain1695 Thanks, that's good to know. Before damaging my thumb which resulted in the fusing of the first joint, I never had trouble releasing my thumb from the ball. However ever since my thumb's joint was fused, I've not been able to use any of my 3 custom drilled finger tip balls. Not even during a very low speed simulated release on the pro-shop's floor. I've tried 2 different pro-shops drilling new balls but neither can figure out how to make so I can still use my thumb. The only thing we didn't try was to bore the thumb hole 2x larger but that defeats the point of using my thumb. So lucky for me, the 2-handed technique became a thing 20 years ago. Otherwise I was done bowling after 30+ years of loving it.

I started bowling with my thumb out in the mid 90s. I couldn't hook the ball enough and some other guy in the league threw thumb out and could hook it like crazy and striking a bunch on the condition we were bowling on. He couldn't pick up any spares though. Took me about a year to get comfortable enough to throw it in league. I would bowl thumb in or out depending on the lane conditions. Never even thought about using my other hand for support. Your quad muscles on your slide leg really have to be strong to get low enough at the line and that takes time to build them up.

I just wanted to put this down here for anyone who is wondering, I bowl 2 handed with my thumb, and I have no issues clearing or anything, I had issues with it in the past, but I added more pitch to my slug and it fixed the issue, 530 rpm’s, 20.9 mph “averages” 234 average. So, the statement around 2 minutes about how your thumb limits all that is incorrect. I could change just as much with my hand has someone without the thumb. This isn’t a hate comment, it’s just a very informative comment about how I bowl and what I have experienced. And I have been bowling 2 handed for about 5 and a half years now. Been bowling for 16 years. 18 years old… and also when I switched from one handed to 2, I ended up developing a much much much cleaner, and disciplined release.

Four or five steps. Your second step (in five step) MUST cross over and you MUST have open hips. You need to create a swing plane. Additionally the two handed style is very athletic and requires good leg muscles for speed and finish position. Unlike one handed, ballspeed in two handed comes entirely from footwork

I will say the reason I started bowling two-handed was because I didn’t have a custom ball fit And I didn’t want to spend $150 on a decent bowling ball that was specialy fit and not know if I even wanted to throw one hand or not. But no matter the fit on the ball you can pretty much throw two handed because you don’t need to rely on grip went to handed.

For about four years, I went two-handed as a way to deal with a wrist injury. While that worked, I saw my average drop 40 pins and had to transition back to one-handed. My issue was that I could not generate the speed necessary as a two-hander. My revs jumped from around 270 one-handed to 400 as a two-hander, but my speed dropped from 17-18 mph off my hand one-handed to 13-14 as a two-hander. I wish I could bowl two-handed, because the physical stress was less. But I couldn't do it. People would tell me the obvious -- "Walk faster!" ... "Get your feet moving!" ... "Bend over further at the waist!" -- but I could not figure out how to do it. I *thought* I was doing those things until I saw video of myself and realized I was not. What really confounds me is I watch a guy like Matt Ogle or Chris Via throw two-handed and they don't seem to be rushing the foul line (Via doesn't even slide much, if at all) and it just gets depressing.

I throw 1 handed but I throw no thumb. Similar to TD and trust me it is harder but once you figure it out and learn how to read the lanes house shots can be made unplayable for some. It can be an advantage there. I used to throw with a thumb (for about 30 years age of 5 to 35) and I cranked the heck out of the ball. Used to have a swing like Rudy Revs. However I had an improper thumbhole and it was too loose. Ball fell off my hand and instead of dropping it behind me I grabbed and forced myself to come around it to hang on. I tore thumb ligaments because of that (at the age of 30) so I struggled for years trying to bowl that I finally taught myself how to bowl no thumb back in 2015. I have been off and on and only back to no thumb permanently for 2 years now (the reason is someone said well you are getting close to 40 might as well throw with a thumb).

I'm not an expert on the rules, but I believe that if you have finger holes in your ball, they have to be used. So if your ball has three finger holes, each one needs a finger/thumb in it. However if your ball only had the two finger holes in it, and you don't use your thumb then it's ok.

Hey what would you guys say about bowling 2handed vs 1handed in terms of Stress on the knee of the sliding leg? I imagine 2handers put more Stress on their knee then 1handers? Anyone?
@Triiiiangle
@Triiiiangle 2 жыл бұрын
I'm a 2h bowler and I have terrible knees (multiple knee injuries over time because of basketball). Got back into bowling and bowled 2h -- I can tell you that I have to wear a knee brace on my sliding knee or I will feel it the next day or whenever my leg cools down. You'd be better off going 1h if you're looking to keep the stress off your knee because you can control your footwork easier. With 2h you have to have great footwork and explosive legs to get the power you want in your swing.

I've found that bending the elbow on the backswing really increased speed. You will get a higher backswing and thus a longer swing. The possible problem for some is that bowling 2-handed requires more athleticism. Notice how a 2-handed bowler's head is much closer to the floor of the lane than the heads of one-handers. You're really down there bowling 2-handed and the ball on the bent-arm backswing will be close to level with your head. Word of caution: Twisting the back while bent over requires fitness and flexibility found more often in the young than the not-so-young. Then again, it's been said: You're as old as your back.
