In this video, I take my motorbike, scooter and Car into the Melbourne CBD to do 19 hook turns.
This video is aimed to help people understand how hookturns work, why they are needed and how they are actually FUN to do, i made this as a video responce to a news article by Rebekah Scanlan

It's actually funny that some people make it out to be harder than what it is. Problem is they only exist in the CBD area in Melbourne and driving schools from the outer suburbs never make it that far in during lessons or testing.

As a Vic resident, that hasn't lived in the city, never found an issue with the hook turn, as you just don't have room for a right lane, so you just do it on the left.

i seen a camera crew there making some tv show or something with old school cars etc. this was a few months back. i like doing hook turns, purely because people dont like them. lol

This video could not have come at a better time. I have to drive in Melbourne tomorrow and I was so stressed about driving though here, I drove in Melbourne today and completely missed the hook turn and turned normally from the right lane (im so scared im gonna get a fine because im a red p plater) but thank you so much for this vid!!

Question though, what happens if you need to turn but there are other cars and you're stuck on the tram tracks?

@@paulapapageorgiou3755 that's OK if you are over the tram tracks As the tram won't go until the lights green.

So this does theoretically exist in Ontario…but would be counterproductive in Toronto. Right turns are more narrow than left turns but a modified version of this (turning left from right lane) would help a lot with our tramways. 😅

Oh yeah you'd have to flip the sides since Aussies drive on the right side of the road not the left like in Canada. (So you'd use this for a left turn.) The idea would be the exact same though

While this rule certainly helps keep trams moving, it seems like in rush hour situations, too many cars wanting to turn right would block cars behind them wanting to turn left, since it appears only maybe max two cars can fit in the hook waiting zone. Is the rule only one or two cars in the lined hook zone or just as many as will fit behind all the way to the intersection you’re turning from?

Yes, it does block cars turning left. As many cars as the intersection can fit, without blocking the pedestrian crossing (Rule 128). So typically two to three cars. Although illegal, sometimes a fourth driver will push through the lights as well.

hi i assume there is a limit of 2 cars in the spots for a hook turn,you said the last car should not have dont that turn,is it illegal or just an unspoken rule,i found your video very well explained,the last time i was in melbourn i avoided hook turns like the plague,but after watching you i reckon they should be an easy thing to do,cheers

Personally, I am a little uneasy about unnecessarily sitting in the middle of an intersection when on a bike. If there is visibly no traffic with a green light and pedestrians crossing with a green or flashing red then surely it's safer to proceed with a right turn then instead of waiting for a possible red light jumper later on.

Nah cause trans just drive through and so do police and other vehicles. If you’re uncomfortable sitting like this on a motorbike just swing the bike out more towards the middle when stopped so you have a better field of view. Hook turns are the most efficient way when I have trams

So we will have to wait for the light to turn red & green first/check then turn right? Wat if the roads are clear ? Do we still have to wait for the lights to turn? Because sometimes the car behind me sound the horn to urge me to turn even the lights are not changing

You have to turn when the lights green. Don't worry about the car who toots they don't know the laws.

By the law, you turn when the lights of the road, that you are turning into, turn green. That driver is very impatient.

3:43 Is that really good practice, cutting in like that? Shouldn't you have signaled and waited for your turn to change lanes? Or if there were cars behind you, just drove straight and made the turn at the next junction?

This seems like a massive flow flaw. Why wouldn't the right lane turn right instead of the left lane turning right in front across the straight straight bound traffic? I'm adding this on the end. Let me make sure I'm clear. Not in regards to the tram but in regards to having two lanes side by side going the same direction. You're crossing over the straight round traffic which seems like it's accident-prone. I don't understand why they don't just have the people doing the hook turn on them right lane going right instead of on the left lane going right.

i believe you are assuming the tram stops on the same set of red lights, it doesn't. they have their own schedule that the traffic goes around, as the trams have priority on these designated CBD roads.They did a trial the right hand turn from right lane but too many people didn't account for the trams and kept either driving into the tram or blocking the path of the tram and as the tram came past it would collect the cars, this happened to Shane Warne.

Most of Melbourne's tram network runs in the middle of the road with traffic either side. So when a tram is going forward and you need to turn right, rather than have a seperate green arrow for right Turning, causing the trams to have wait longer on a red. You are required to to a hook turn. Its all basically so trams are more speedy and efficient.

Riders in Taiwan : First time? Sadly, the transportation ministry of Taiwanese government believe that it is dangerous to ride motorcycles under 250 c.c. on the inner lanes, so they only allow these motorcycles/scooters to go on the outer 2 lanes. As long as you can't ride into the left turn lane on the inner side of the road, you can only do a hook turn if you want to turn left. Ridiculously, the speed limit in the city is usually 50 km/h, and 70 km/h in the suburbs, and most of the motorcycles/scooters over 50 c.c. can reach the speed limit easily.

Just to let you know, you legally have to wait until the light on the road you wish to ENTER has turned green, not until the road you entered to hook turn has turned red. You keep going early and getting upset at people doing it properly, incredibly infuriating to see people drive wrong and get annoyed at people driving right.
