How to Hook up a Gooseneck Trailer for Safe Towing

The components of a gooseneck trailer hookup include the ball which sits in the bed of the tow vehicle, the coupler attached to the trailer, safety chains, a breakaway brake system, an electrical connection, jack feet on the trailer and trailer legs into which the jack feet retract.

Glad to see, that you used your foot to slow the land gear. My dad taught me this also. BUT For a different reasons. If you allow the land gear to snap up, It will break the spring. When the spring breaks, you have to crawl on the ground to pick up the landing gear.

Great video. I noticed the use of shouldered eyebolts for the connection of the safety chain. The drawback with using this type of eyebolt where an angle pull might be exerted, is the loss of strength of the eyebolt At 30° the rated capacity is by 40%, at 45° the rated capacity is reduced by 67%, and at a 20° angle the rated capacity is reduced by 80%. The ideal eyebolt to be used where an angle pull is likely to be experienced is a swivel eyebolt. The rated capacity for swivel eyebolts does not diminish regardless of any angle pull. Just a little FYI to help others to be better protected when towing.

Everything looks good with the hookup, the only thing I will add is after retracting the spring-loaded jack legs, reset the locks before walking to the next leg. Relying on just the spring to carry the inner leg is inviting disaster. The spring may break or relax and let the leg drop and grind away, fall out onto the road, and cut your own tire or go through someone's windshield. I'm used to either a bumper ball or pintle hitch, where there is normally a secondary lock pin for the coupler, is a gooseneck ball hitch not equipped with a secondary lock for the latch?

If you have a flat on your gooseneck is it possible to safely tow it? Or do you need to do a tire change?

You can safely drive slowly with a flat tire on tandem duals i wouldnt try it on anything with single tires because you will most likely ruin the rim. And especially with a white cargo trailer

If your connecting to a towbar tongue to catch the drawbar coupling if it disconnects to stop it dropping to the road, crossing the safety chains on a gooseneck hitch is pointless.

flight2k5 A gooseneck is more compact in the bed of the truck is one of the big reasons why people choose them. Most equipment trailers, large car haulers, and horse trailer are gooseneck and large travel trailer tend to be fifth wheel so it often depends on the type of trailer you wish to pull.

Crossing chains allows a basket for the trailer tongue in case your trailer were to "unhitch" instead of running them straight and having it dig into the ground and potentially damaging several components on the trailer
