Great instructional video, sir! One of the best I have seen. One thing I wanna add for other people is that not all trailers have brakes so some, particularly the smaller ones won’t have a brake away cable

completely new to hitch and balls and trailers, but competent, any height to ball education that i should know about? safety height? so many different heights. planning on using ford e250 van with straight 3 ball harbor frieght hitch.

You want to keep the trailer as level as possible. Get the right hitch for the job. Most hitches can be used as either a drop hitch, or flipped over for a rise.

Good video. I’m not a fan of twisting the chains though. It can decrease their strength and could possibly cause them to break prematurely if too much of a load gets put on them. It is best to shorten the chains. The ones on that trailer had pins in the hooks that could be pulled out and adjusted. That’s not always possible and I have had to twist them in the past.

You're right. I'm not twisting them enough to bind them, just to make them shorten. (This trailer also isn't mine, so I didn't want to modify it, as I assume many people also are borrowing trailers. But that's a good point if you own the trailer.)

Hooking your brake cable like that won't pass dot inspection the dot officer told me it has to a tach to your receiver

Every state has different laws. My state doesn't even require brakes unless it's a 5th wheel or gooseneck. Can you post what state you're in and what your state requires, according to the DOT officer? I'd love to know!

Excellent demonstration! Quick question though: If i need to shorten up the chain a little, so it isn’t rubbing on the ground, can I feed them through the attachment point and then hook back onto the chain?

I don't see why not. Just give it a test to make sure it doesn't move too much or restrict your turning.

@@AndyfBaby319 Cross the chains. If it's really long depending on which end connectors, you can shorten the chains length to fit your needs. The end connectors should have a pin which you can release and re-connect for shorter length. If there's none just cut the chain shorter! There's plenty of scientific document to prove that twisting the chains will dramatically reduce the chain's breaking strength. Do some research.

@@AndyfBaby319 Remove clevis pin from chain hook and move chain links . It is not necessary to cut links . Shorten one chain more than the other so the chains will not rub each other in the relaxed position .
