That is funny.. I have had, at least, 5 people ask me to do a video showing how to back up an RV.. I don't have the time to capture and explain something in an informative manner that just comes naturally to me.. I learned my trailer towing and backing skills in a WWII era 5 ton wrecker, without power steering, backing a 30kw Generator trailer through 300 yards of forest after towing it through some of the most narrowest German streets I have ever driven on.. All this happened on 5 hours of sleep in a 50 hour period when I was only 19.. Talk about "baptism by fire".. It could have been worse, At least the rain had stopped and the sun was up..

+RVdaydream that's the hardest part for me, taking something that I do without even thinking about it, and put it into words WHILE I'm doing it.

Same here my husband would take us camping and now that he isn’t here anymore my kids still want to camp as a mom I want kids to keep those memories alive I have learned to hook up the trailer and how to drive it forward lol but back it in to my driveway I still can’t I have to call for help but I need to learn it’s so frustrating to the point we’re I want to cry and quit so here I am watching videos I hope I can get it soon 😣

or you could just hold the bottom of the steering wheel and turn it in the direction of where you want the tail of trailer to go.

@ David Wilson : Holding the bottom of the steering wheel is the more usual advice, but not so easy when you are twisted round in your seat.

Well, I wouldn't know that as I have had a neck surgery and back surgery. I use mirrors more than trying to twist around. Even if you do twist around to look you can still start at the bottom and that way you know for sure which way to turn the wheel. Think in most peoples minds they want to turn wheel towards where they want to go rather than trying to think opposite. Just my opinion. I know it helped me when I first started towing. Now I do it both ways.

I always messed up with the RV and utility trailer until I watched this video. That single statement made it click, well done!

you really did.. I get to pick up my 29 foot TT tomorrow, and i'l be solo, as I drive it off the lot, and to my RV storage, and I'm sure once I get there, i'll have to corner-back the thing into a spot, and having never done it, the perspectives, and showing the drivers mirrors, and the exterior.. is SO SO helpful to newbies like me, so again, thank you! because all the videos I've found until yours has been a 20+ year RV sales veteran, backing a trailer up in 30 secs, teaching you nothing in the process

Silverbreex, now a days with camera systems abound, you could buy a 4 channel system or two and put some cameras on the RV itself to hlp assist with backing with a rear view and right side view. for some ideas on mounting look up *5th wheel double towing* by *Tiverton* it was posted in 2012 with a system he DIY together, but you can find resonably priced cameras. While I do not suggest screwing or bolting to the RV itself, you can always find really good magnets and suction cups to mount to metal and solid surfaces like the skin of the RV or a window (inside/behind or outside). Not only that they double as a security system.

Just make sure you looked for posted signs before using if they mention requiring contact for permission to use said lot, not all are friendly enough to just let you use at will. If you like check in with trucking companies nearby and see if they got lot space and would let you come in to practice, or if they offer workshops even.

Good the read someone had taken time to get training from a formal school, I often get asked by those looking into towing RV what to do I recommend they look at some non company schools as some like you found one do offer side courses for RV ers at a discount since it is a non CDL you got. The school I went to the head coach told us that one guy actually took the course just to drive a Semi-towed FLOAT in parades, if they are close enough I recommend the independent T-T training school I went to.

Just the opposite experience here when I didn't know how to back. I remember being in a very tight spot with vehicles parked on both sides of the road in front of the RV's. This one guy came out and knew exactly from outside the trailer how to give me instructions on how to turn my wheels to get it in.

For those wondering the best places to mount camera's on trailer at the least: Sides: For Trailer at any height facing rearward and much like side rear view mirror make the side sort of disappear out of view but not by much so you have a broader view and can see how close side obstacles get when maneuvering. Best to make sure the picture is horizontal and NOT sideways-vertical and do remember it may not be left is left and right is right on monitor or screen, so after mounting take a bit to get used to using it before going on the road and remember to keep using the vehicles side rear view mirrors. You can always readjust the mirror up and down angle to what you prefer to see. Rear of trailer: Up high looking downward with bumper almost in view, but it will not offer any above view for any overhead obstacles unless mounted near the top and had a wide vertical view. Down low even under the bumper set back a bit as these two would offer best view for seeing how close to an object you are. If you mount it midway you will have certain above and below visual issues unless its a true wide vertical and horizontal view camera and also will limit your view on overhead obstacles to the height of your trailer including roof mounted equipment. You can even go with two cameras, one above and the other below. For the vehicle you are towing with you mount the side view more to the front and looking back like it is a side rear view mirror and again the side just out of view. As for rear view you can mount above or below the brake/cargo light but make sure not it does not block that light, and aimed downward into the bed a bit, or you can bumper mount it as well or add a second one on the bumper or below it for checking things out on the trailer if you hear some strange noise. Most camera systems are multi-channel be it two, three or four cameras on one monitor, you can buy two and the cost along with a recording system as well will help you save more than that in insurance when an accident happens. Just make sure if you get one for the trailer that you can also use it as a security system to monitor for safety at a camp site or when it is stored and not being used. Best to go with two four channel systems so if you only use 3 you have an extra cam in case you need it. Just make sure with your manufacturer warranty if you will void it by mounting with screws, otherwise I suggest in a really good suction cup system or gluing a mounting plate to screw the camera mount to. If it is a metallic surface you can get some strong magnets but watch you do not scratch your paint unless you got paint protection film covering it it will still mount but wont leave noticeable scratches. Use your best judgement when mounting, and if you mount to the frame you could even use zip-tie to also secure the camera as an added measure to your primary mounting method in case it fails. Some of you I am sure can be extra creative and actually find a way to place the side views on the front at the corner and aim it rear ward to get the camera more out of the way. Hope you did not find this too boring or long and otherwise quite helpful in giving you some ideas to help you when you go about camping on holiday/vacation.

Check out *5th wheel double towing* by *Tiverton* as its a video from 2012 showing his camera set ups that i am talking about, as I said now a days we have better camera systems with multi channel capability. Yes you can even mount the camera inside on a window with suction cups. Most modern camera systems are reasonably priced, but Tiverton used different cameras and DIYed them to his rig pretty nicely. My suggestions for extra skill building fun may be off I am using the measure of typical 40 foot trailer so some adjustments may be needed, as I said just a basic guideline as they are not part of truck driving test, they are something I did with others who attended an outside workshop at a company first worked for.

When you are about ready to do the stuff I sugested, let me know here in the comments if you want further info, when I did those courses the told me to do what i would normally do in the standard ones, keep close to the cones with a few feet. The figure 8 also doubles as a reverse U turn lesson which you can do either direction and minimum distance between circles from edge to edge is 20 feet. I see after reading others comments I also replied to many of them my opinion as well, not meaning to step on anyone's "toes" that it turns out you been towing trailers for 18 years professionally and on the farm before then, and are now an instructor which kind of shows in this video that i did not realize before. Let me know here when before you got time to do some more maneuvering lessons videos I got a got few more and I can send you a message.

+Dslsmoke DP that 6 o'clock position is a tried and true method. I like teaching it from the top of the wheel and steering towards the "problem" because if you can back in a straight line, you can back in anywhere!

That's a good idea too! Thanks for the input. I've backed flat bed trailers, but not a travel trailer. the travel trailer has more blind spots; you can't see the back opposite corner.I will be towing my own trailer soon as my husband won't be able to anymore. Thank you for the advise.

Yeah putting your hand at the area above the 3 and 9 marks you have to counter turn to the direction you want to go or for more easier you just the points below the 3 and 9. Or as I use this; Counter clockwise to go right and clockwise to go left when starting to back from a straight line up. Experienced Trucker.

I back up my trailers with my hand on the bottom (6 o'clock) and it works too. I even teach it this way. Use 7 o'clock and 5 o'clock for position to straighten up. This a wonderful video for learning!!
