Excellent video! I prefer sustainable solutions and use a wash-in dwr treatment when I see rain failing to ‘bead’ on my jacket. The ‘humidity’ problem is real issue I believe, as so many ‘breathable’ jackets will not work efficiently if the humidity is high. Apparently the laboratory testing of these ‘breathable’ fabrics is done in a low humidity setting. So even with the best jackets you are going to get wet from sweat inside. This is reduced by mechanical ventilation of the jacket using underarm zips etc. One day perhaps someone will invent the ‘perfect’ jacket which can overcome all these problems, but in the meantime we have just to manage as best we can.

This just shows and confirms my experience with these kind of garments: it's like opening a can of worms. My first breathable jacket was a berghaus around the mid nineties. My latest from october last year. Still doesn't work like the industry is telling you. Thanks for pointing out its limitations. There is a way out: change your attitude on rain. It's just water!

Thank you so much for this video! I especially appreciate the explanation of temperature and humidity being potential limitations for a garment's breathability. A question, if I may: do the peaks of a dwr coating go in all directions and if so, would this not affect breathability? You mentioned a microporous membrane can allow water vapor/sweat to pass through, but once it gets to the surface where the dwr coating is, would it not be trapped? I guess I'm wondering if those peaks are more so for keeping larger droplets from passing through rather than vapors. Also, very much appreciate your talks on sustainability and our role in caring for the earth. It's very inspiring to hear about how brands are taking responsibility and the technology behind it. Would love to see a video about sustainable garment choices, if you havent already done one :)

Hi FunkYoyo, Thank you for this comment! I do unbderstand your questions but... I am not a chemical engineer 😉. I tried to explain the DWR with mountain peaks since everybody can relate to it. In real it is a bit more complicated and we need to talk about nano-technology and peaks are more like spikes or nails standing upright. The make that the larger waterdrops bead, like mercury... But that beads because of an other reason... The small waterdrops bead and form larger drops that roll off the face fabric The DWR does not limit the breathability of fabrics and membranes since there is a size difference in water drops and water molecules. I hope this helps. If not: get back to me. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Great explanation! However, it's not quite clear to me why we need the waterproof membrane when it seems like the DWR coating is doing all the moisture repelling. Why should the membrane be water repellent if the water does not reach it. Wouldn't a DWR coating on a sweater work just as well?
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Well... DWR is only repelling and not waterproof over a longer periode of time.

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews allright, so the DWR coating will fail eventually after which the membrane takes over, If I understand this correctly. But when the outer material is soaked the membrane won't be breathable, right? Doesnt that mean that the jacket is only breathable untill the DWR coating fails? Thanks for the reply!

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Morning Gijs! To me it’s pretty simple, the products that needs the DWR is shell-jackets, somewhat soft shells and pants. From Fjällräven it would be their eco-shell. Last night I actually treated my eco-shell with their own FR product, have used Nikwax for some time but it didn’t quite meet the standards, at least not for the eco-shell. For plain G-1000 I use Nikwax cotton wax. I use Nikwax for my down jacket with good results.
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, but some regard the Greenland Wax gear and the wax also as DWR ;-). Sometimes even I do. You gave the perfect answers. With FR... I am not sure they would advise other products. The company is rather depending on its own research and products. I have been using Grangers and Nikwax treatments and I don't notice that many difference. Unfortunately the hardwearing C6/8 is still not beaten.

Excellent vid , I honestly think a lot of the info around various membranes in regards to breathability etc.. is marketing hype. If you put on a technical hard shell and start exerting your self none of them will get rid of the moisture fast enough to stop you overheating/sweating, you have to use wicking baselayers. It's a balance between how bad the weather is versus being sweaty and what you are doing. I think the other thing these companies really don't highlight is how important the DWR coating actually is, any of these jackets really just become just shower-proof minus the coating and I think a lot of people don't realize they actually need re-proofing. With this in mind I am now looking at Ventile jackets for my next waterproof, not so long ago I would have dismissed them as only being worn by nostalgic fools but the more I read about them and for what I do outdoors they seem to really make sense and it seems a few companies are now starting to embrace the fabric again. (I actually found your channel through the review on the Sasta jacket).
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny, Nice comment and thanks for the compliment and your experience. I am not sure if its all marketing but it is certainly there. In colder weather with wind and rain the breathable fabrics and a super physical fitness help to stay comfy. But that sad... I hardly wear them. I wear a FR and a Lundhags jacket that are very like the Sasta.... I love them. In real bad weather I like to use only a merino long sleeve, get wet and when I stop take a dry shirt and a protective layer just for that pauze. Continuing with putting on the wet shirt is not that great in the beginning but after a while.... But it's not for everybody. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

After a bunch of videos about membranes and DWR, I still don't understand one important detail. Why do we need a membrane if it gets wet anyway without DWR? How does a membrane waterproof jacket differ from a regular cheap windbreaker that I will apply DWR on?
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't get your question Renzzo....The membrane dos not get wet, it's just a waterproof and breathable layer between the shell and a liner. The DWR has the function to rappel water. It's not waterproof in the long run. Most windbreakers have a DWR coating and can even have a membrane. The holes in the membrane are bigger to ventilate more resulting in less waterproof. Did you read the article I wrote about waterproof and breathable? Maybe it helps: outdoorguru.com/how-to-en/expert-advice-waterproof-what-does-it-mean/ Cheers, Gijs
