Although they can be implemented as an artistic choice, perfectly-quantized drums often sound sterile and lifeless.
Humanizing your rhythms can help make them feel performed and achieve that enigmatic feeling we refer to as ‘groove.’ In the video tutorial above, we walk through how to humanize your drums via velocity, timing, and pitch manipulation. Focusing on FL Studio and Ableton, we also explore some DAW-specific tricks for templatizing and accelerating your workflow (if you’re a Logic Pro user, check out our other tutorial on humanization).
Humanizing rhythms is a delicate art that strives to strike a balance between accuracy (we don’t want to go so far off the grid that the intended rhythm becomes unclear) and the musicality that’s born from the inherent imperfections of human performance. Furthermore, some rhythmic adjustments can be quite subtle, so diving into humanization can also be a great way to sharpen your musical ear.

In FL, if you click on the arrow instead of the folder you can preview the different options by right clicking on your mouse. Huge time saver. Thanks for the tutorial.

how to use one ? you pretty much use one as a cover over your mic to protect from air projected from speaking or singing , if you mean how to use one as far as distancing or whatever just like 3-4 inches from the mic is fine

Humanization is one of those tiny tweaks that doesn't seem important as a beginner but actually separates amateur productions from Top Tier productions. Humanization largely about: A) Timing/Grid Position B) Velocity C) Samples with tiny Variations Techniques for Achieving Humanization: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Play By Hand + Do Not Quantize 100% The easiest way to Achieve humanistic is to play the Midi By Hand and then not Quantize by 100% 2. Velocity Variance Change the velocity of the notes to match a more human feel 3. Sample Variance Use for example a hi hat1 and hihat2 that sounds almost exactly like hi hat1 but with some slight variation as if the drummer hit the hi hat a different way like maybe a different angle or with a left hand. You can even try just doing a slightly different eq 4. Nudge Sounds slightly off the grid. Make notes a little late and early, less accurate more human). In Ableton trying using the delay offset 5. Grooves/Swing Most Daws have some type of Groove/Swing feature that basically smartly nudges stuff off the grid. In Ableton: -click the little wavey thing to display groove pool -once in groove pool right click to browse grooves - Slide up and down the percentage of the groove n.b: - you can drag and drop your selected .arg groove file to the clip you want or entire sound) - If you press commit... it prints the groove to the sound - if you drop any audio file into the groove pool it will extract the groove from there. Meaning it will look for transients and map them out to the grid. 6. Add Randomization ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Notes: Cohesive Groove - Make sure to use the same groove for the whole sound group For Example The Bass and the Drums should have a lot of the same swing Drum Kit Cohesion - f you are going for that human sound you have to choose sounds that sound like they come from the same drum kit Groove is King - Groove is especially important for hi hats and basslines (shuffle)

You're trying to humanize SYNTHETIC drums? Facepalm! When I do drums I make sfz files from ACOUSTIC drum samples (with round robins AND velocity layers) then I run the groove though a humanization plugin, much better, much more realistic.
