One of my most precious possessions is my Waterford Newgrange Winter Soltice vase which I purchased at the Waterford factory in 1996. They had to ship it to me as that particular pattern was a non export pattern, which ment that I could not take it home with me. It is absolutely breathtaking and I rarely even touch it, I have the original box and documentation for it.

I have a very old set of lead crystal knife rests. A few of them are cut crooked, on the ends, and the design of diamonds are very picky to the feel. I will never part with them. Great information. I'm a very new collector of small pieces of laser engraved and etched crystal glass. I'm really not sure of the quality of what I pick up and whether it's lead crystal, but I don't really mind at this stage. I've got some nice pieces and here in Ireland there are lots of crystal makers. My personal favourite is Dublin Crystal. They will help you to design a piece if you wish and they have their own designs as well (laser engraved) I'll be following your channel to learn more. All the best. Liked, subbed and 🔔

I had a friend that was so tight with his money that it was after a time said to be an illness . None the less at the time he got married I thought he was just crazy cheap. So for the gift when he got married I got him a really large Waterford vase similar to the one you were showing. I did that in the hope he would buy his wife flowers at least on special dates . I moved and went off with the army so I never did get a chance to find out how many times he bought his wife flowers if any . Oh well . He is dead now. I still hope one of his kids get the vase when the mother dies. I bet that unless she bought flowers for it there was hardly a time when flowers would have been in it .

I have questions because I'm super paranoid about drinking out of glasses that might have lead. First is have Coke glasses ever been made with lead? I don't mean the paint because the ones I have aren't painted, but they have a bit of a ring when tapped. The same is true for a wine glass I have. The top of the wine glass is red glass and the stem is clear and it has patterns cut into it like crystal. But none of these glasses I have are all that heavy. So I was just wondering about the ring they make. Could it just be their shape making them sound kind of like a bell? Because if I hold onto them in one hand and tap them with metal, then they sound like regular glass. I was wondering if lead crystal makes that same ring even if you're holding it while tapping. Sorry for the long comment, but I'm paranoid.

its a shame you could not add a more modern piece of waterford IE anything after the years 2000 as you will find it was them machine made and machine cut in eastern Europe. so watch out just recourse it has a stamp or a label dose not make it the real thing, Waterford also took over Stuart crystal around the years 2000 and closed the factory in wordsley england and took everything to easten europe.

The difference between crystal and glass is that crystal has a crystaline molecular structure and cleaves along a plane. Crystal refracts light greater due to the crystal planes. It sparkles. Glass does not have cleavage along a plane. It will show fracture patterns which are curves. It does not have a crystaline molecular structure. Crystal may or may not be weighted with a metal such as lead which gets trapped in the crystals and causes further refraction of light which makes it sparkle even more. Lead added to the material makes it heavy since lead is heavy. Crystal is cooled slowly to give the crystals time to grow. Glass is cooled quickly. It is expensive to control the cooling temperature which makes crystal expensive compared to glass. Both are transparent. They refract light differently.
@oltedders

Nope. It has everything to do with its lead content. Most early 19th century glass had a high lead content. Modern crystal, by definition, must contain 24% lead.

This video speaks in general terms of taking into account many variables when attempting to identify the value of a piece of glass, for example looking at all of the detail in a piece of glass. Typically the more intricately detailed and designed a piece, the higher the quality. Of course clarity, and the quality of the reflection of light will also help you to identify crystal. Hope this helps to clarify.
