Time lapse demonstrates the "Hydrophane" properties of Ethiopian Opal. In general, almost all Ethiopian opal is hydrophane (becomes translucent to transparent when placed in water) and Australian opal is not).

The hydrophone properties of opal vary quite a lot depending on how porous it is.

I sell Ethiopian opal and out of hundreds sold only two ever dried and cracked. far far more aussie opal I have dealt with over my 50 years of cutting/ making/ selling fine gems. plus Ethiopian are far more durable..I know I dropped 10 onto cement ..twice .no visible damage.try that with aussie stones. great video by a master cutter here

For how long were the opals in the water? If I wear my ethiopian opal ring in the bath for a short time, will they become transparent like in the video?

That was definitely cool. What gives the Ethiopian opals their porosity? It must be visible under magnification, right?

Pulitzer Opal I am looking forward to all future posts. :) Just an FYI. I attended the Ventura CA gem and mineral show this weekend and was awestruck when I stumbled across Idaho Opal. I bet you know a lot about it but I didn't. So I asked the nice lady how the mine was founded. She said a couple that got lost hiking stumbled onto it. Can you believe their luck?!

@@PulitzerOpal Indonesia have lots of opals deposit including the famous Precious Banten opal...they are cheaper to get local Banten than the expensive raw of Ethiopian. It is easy to see welo vs Banten, observe the hydrophane properties..White welo turn transparent very quick in water but white banten not

I have a general video in which I talk about emeralds, sapphire, Ruby, pearl and others. It is probably not as detailed as you seem to be interested in. Decide for yourself: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bsp1oa51ptq7c2g.html

Isn’t that interesting. I wonder what causes the different types of opal to do that? Was it climate related or the type of rock it’s found in. I want to know why this occurs coz I’m so intrigued by this.
@KIRALYW4 жыл бұрын
Pulitzer Opal there could be a university that has one that you could use. They might find that an interesting thing to look at. Geologists would be interested. Start talking politics & you’ll bore me mate. I’m intrigued by this.

Thanks for video. I recall old books saying not to put opals in safe or they dry out and lose color. My seller told me real Australian opals would not have that problem. I had some cut and rough stored in safes since 2006 and pulled some cut ones out and no problems colors still bright. Is this what caused the myth? Or have I been lucky. Materials I seen miners pull out of ground on videos from Australia appears dry on videos. Never been there, is this video to dispel myth? Be crazy to have jewelry one had to store in water.

Pulitzer Opal Thank you Sir for the detailed response. Be bad news after all that work and expense to have a piece of Opal JewelryCrack or expensive rough crack up. Matt that I bought the rough from I also bought the awesome pendant that he was wearing. He told me the best thing to do with opal jewelry was to wear it and for the pendant shower with it on. I again thank u. There's a video on KZfaq i watched a while back this huge solid color uncut opal that was something? Like 500 + carats that had been stored in a safe in Illinois seems like 53 years. Almost was lost to time. Thank Y for the detailed reply.
